During rainy season (June to August), 70 groundwater samples from shallow and deep aquifers were collected from Dinajpur Sadar Upazila, Dinajpur, Bangladesh. The water samples were analyzed for the major cations: (Na<SUP>+</SUP>, Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>, Mg<SUP>2+</SUP>, K<SUP>+</SUP>, Cu<SUP>2+</SUP>, Mn<SUP>2+</SUP>, Fe<SUP>2+</SUP>) and anions: (Cl<SUP>−</SUP>, CO₃<SUP>2−</SUP>, HCO₃<SUP>−</SUP>, SO₄<SUP>2−</SUP> and NO₃<SUP>−</SUP>). Water samples contained Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>, Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> and Na<SUP>+</SUP> as dominant cations and HCO₃<SUP>−</SUP> and Cl<SUP>−</SUP> as dominant anions. Based on SARconductivity plot, the groundwater samples were classified into C2S1 and C1S1 classes. All water samples were under ‘very good’, ‘good’ and ‘permissible’ categories according to Wilcox diagram. The chemistry of groundwater is dominated by silicate weathering and (Na<SUP>+</SUP> + Mg<SUP>2+</SUP>) and (Cl<SUP>−</SUP> + SO₄<SUP>2−</SUP>) accounts for about 55% of cations and anions. The contribution of (Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> + Mg<SUP>2+</SUP>) and (Na<SUP>+</SUP> + K<SUP>+</SUP>) to total cations and HCO₃<SUP>−</SUP> indicates the domination of silicate weathering. The concentrations of the major parameters suggest that water quality of shallow and deep tube wells in the study area was satisfactory for drinking and irrigation water.

The study aimed to investigate the impact of the microfinance program on loan borrowers’ asset accumulation. In doing this, the study used descriptive and statistical methods to achieve the objectives. Primary data were collected from 192 respondents from Bangladesh using survey questionnaires. The data were analyzed using the multiple linear regression model. The result revealed that the majority of the borrowers said their assets such as farm, land, and livestock remained the same, which implies that microfinance borrowers still lag behind accumulating household assets. However, in the case of housing conditions and household appliances, there was a marginal increase. The regression result provides evidence that, among other factors, the amount of loan received from microfinance institutions and time duration with them is the most significant role-playing factor for borrower’s sustainable well-being. The age and education level of borrowers are identified as positively related to asset accumulations, but not substantially so. Moreover, training provided by microfinance institutions is not effective and influential for microfinance borrowers’ wealth accumulation, which is evidenced by the findings. This study’s insights are worthwhile for any microfinance institution’s decision-makers, development partners, and government to stress the shortcomings and accelerate the borrower’s wealth status.
ABSTRACT :A total of 5 samples of marine sediments were analyzed for residues of organochlorine insecticide from the coast of Chittagong, Bangladesh. The analytical method consisted of 3 phases 1) extraction, 2) clean-up and 3) analysis through Gas Chromatography (GC) with Electron Capture Detector (ECD). The concentration ranges were as follows 0.18-1.33 ng.g-¹ for aldrin, 0.2-1.84 ng.g-¹ for dieldrin, 0.30-1.31 ng.g-¹ for endrin, 0.11-0.26 ng.g-¹ for lindane, 0.56-3.36 ng.g-¹ for heptachlor, 0.2-1.51 ng.g-¹ for P, P' DDE, 0.18-2.91 ng.g-¹ for P, P' DDD, 0.11-3.12 ng.g-¹ for P, P' DDT. These results reveal that the sediments in the coast of Chittagong are slightly contaminated with some of these organochlorine insecticides.
