        RESEARCH ARTICLES : Genetic Behavior of Families Selected from Some Local Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) Populations in Egypt

        The objectives of the study were to investigate the genetic behavior of some biological and economical traits of 14 okra populations collected from Dakahlia Governorate, which underwent two cycles of inbreeding with selection. Selection of individual plants based on earliness, high number of pods, and minimum neck/pod ratio was carried out in all generations. The results showed that the means and ranges of all studied traits for all families became smaller in the S2 generation than those in the S0 generation. Highly significant variations were observed among populations for all the studied traits. The mean performance clearly indicated the agronomic superiority of some families over the others. Family 9 followed by family 12 showed the earliest flowering plants and the highest yield per plant. Phenotypic variances were higher than the corresponding genotypic variances indicating predominance of environmental effects on the expression of these characters. The magnitude of phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation varied from one trait to another. High broad-sense heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean were shown by the different traits, especially, plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length, neck/pod ratio and plant yield. This implicates that these traits were under the control of additive genetic effects, and could be effectively improved through selection. Plant yield had positive and highly significant correlation at genotypic and phenotypic level with number of pods per plant,plant height and neck/pod ratio.

        NEW SERIES IDENTITIES FOR ${\frac{1}{\Pi}}$

        In the theory of hypergeometric and generalized hypergeometric series, classical summation theorems have been found interesting applications in obtaining various series identities for ${\Pi}$, ${\Pi}^2$ and ${\frac{1}{\Pi}}$. The aim of this research paper is to provide twelve general formulas for ${\frac{1}{\Pi}}$. On specializing the parameters, a large number of very interesting series identities for ${\frac{1}{\Pi}}$ not previously appeared in the literature have been obtained. Also, several other results for multiples of ${\Pi}$, ${\Pi}^2$, ${\frac{1}{{\Pi}^2}}$, ${\frac{1}{{\Pi}^3}}$ and ${\frac{1}{\sqrt{\Pi}}}$ have been obtained. The results are established with the help of the extensions of classical Gauss's summation theorem available in the literature.

        Hydrothermal pretreatment of oxytetracycline fermentation residue: Removal of oxytetracycline and increasing the potential for anaerobic digestion

        The presence of high level of antibiotics in the antibiotic fermentation residue is one of the main reasons that prevent their direct disposal or further use as a resource. In this study, the feasibility of using the hydrothermal pretreatment for removing oxytetracycline (OTC) from its fermentation residue and enhancing anaerobic digestion was evaluated under different temperatures i.e. 110, 130, 150 and 170℃. The results showed that the removal rate of OTC increased as a function of temperature, and hydrothermal treatment at 130℃ for 5 min was found sufficient to reduce the concentration of OTC from 3.9 ㎎/g to less than the detection limit (i.e., 0.25 ng/g). Biochemical methane potential tests showed that the cumulative methane production over 23 d was 73.7, 215.9, 656.8, and 439.0NmL CH₄/gVS for the raw residue and the residue treated at 130, 150, and 170℃ for 5 min, respectively. At the same time, the abundances of tetracycline resistance genes were reduced by hydrothermal treatments followed by anaerobic digestion. Conclusively, it is suggested that hydrothermal treatment at 150℃ for 5 min was found beneficial for OTC fermentation residues ensuring the removal of OTC and further use of the residue for anaerobic digestion.

        Potentiometric determination of iron in polluted water samples using new modified Fe(III)-screen printed ion selective electrode

        This article is focused on the determination of Fe(III) ion as an important factor in water pollution. A potentiometric method based on screen-printed ion-selective electrode was described for the determination of Fe(III) ion in different polluted water samples. It is based on incorporation of the Fe-phosphotungstate ion-associate in a screen-printed electrode (SPE) composition and tricresylpho-sphate (TCP) as plasticizer. The influences of the paste composition, different conditioning parameters and foreign ions on the electrode performance were investigated. The reversibility and also response time of the electrode have been studied. The electrode showed Nernstian response of 19.20 ± 0.73 mV decade-1 in the concentration range of 1 × 10-7–2.5 × 10-2 mol L-1. The electrode was found to be usable within the pH range of 3–7.5 and exhibited a fast response time (about 7 s), low detection limit (1.57 × 10-7 mol L-1), long lifetime (>6 months) and good stability. The isothermal temperature coefficient (dE0/dt) of the electrode was calculated. The electrode was successfully applied for the determination of Fe(III) ion in pure solutions and polluted water samples (formation, tab and sea water samples) using potentiometric determination technique. The results obtained applying this potentiometric electrode is comparable with those obtained using inductive coupled plasma technique.

        Transepithelial Laser versus Alcohol Assisted Photorefractive Keratectomy Safety and Efficacy: 1-Year Follow-up of a Contralateral Eye Study

        Purpose: To compare single-step transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TPRK) to conventional alcohol assisted epithelialremoval then photorefractive keratectomy (AAPRK) regarding pain, epithelial healing, visual acuity, corneal haze measuredsubjectively and objectively, higher order aberrations changes, contrast sensitivity and vector analysis of astigmatic correctionwith one year follow-up. Methods: A prospective double-blind randomized study of 29 subjects (58 eyes) who underwent myopic aberration-freelaser correction by smart pulse technology using Schwind Amaris 1050 Hz with 1-year follow-up. Right eye was randomlytreated by AAPRK or TPRK. Postoperative assessment was performed on day 1 and 3, at 1st week, and 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 12thmonths. Patients were assessed for pain, epithelial healing, visual acuity, corneal haze, astigmatic correction, higher order aberrationsand contrast sensitivity. Results: Epithelial healing was complete by the 3rd day in 62.1% of AAPRK eyes and in 89.7% of TPRK eyes. First day postoperativepain was higher in TPRK group (p = 0.0134). The decimal uncorrected visual acuity at 12 months was 1.47 ± 0.39 and1.57 ± 0.38 in the AAPRK and TPRK groups respectively (p = 0.3719). Post-photorefractive keratectomy haze reached a finallevel of 0.04 ± 0.14 and 0.02 ± 0.1 in AAPRK and TPRK groups respectively (p = 0.5607). Contrast sensitivity was comparable inlow and high frequency cycles per degree. Vector analysis of astigmatic correction showed correction index at one year of 0.99and 1.05 for AAPRK and TPRK groups respectively. Conclusions: Alcohol assisted and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy have comparable results regarding safety andefficacy.

        Construction and performance characteristics of chemically modified carbon paste electrodes for the selective determination of Co(II) ions in water samples

        The construction, performance characteristics and application of Co(II)-chemically modified carbon paste electrodes (CMCPEs) based on bis(salicylaldehyde)-o-phenylenediamine (Schiff base I, SalophH2; ionophore A), N-salicylidene-o-aminophenol (Schiff base II, SaphH2, ionophore B), [Co(Saloph)] complex (ionophore C) and [Co(Saph)OH2] complex (ionophore D) are reported in this paper. The CMCPEs are prepared by incorporating of A–D ionophores into a plasticized carbon paste electrodes to form electrodes I–IV sensors, respectively. The prepared electrodes exhibit Nernstian slope of 29.20 ± 1.13, 28.20 ± 2.07, 29.90 ± 0.26 and 28.80 ± 1.04 mV decade−1 towards Co(II) ion over a wide concentration range of 1.0 × 10−7–1.0 × 10−2, 7.9 × 10−7–1.0 × 10−2, 4.9 × 10−8–1.0 × 10−2 and 5.1 × 10−7–1.0 × 10−2 mol L−1 with a detection limit of 1.0 × 10−7, 7.9 × 10−7, 4.9 × 10−8 and 5.1 × 10−7 mol L−1 at pH range 3.0–8.0, 3.5–7, 2.0–8.0 and 2.5–7.5 for electrodes I–IV, respectively. The electrodes showed good selectivity for Co(II) ion toward a wide variety of metal ions. The proposed electrodes were successfully applied for the determination of Co(II) ion in real spiked water samples and the results obtained compared well with those obtained using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AAS).

        Hollow N-TiO2/MnO2 nanocomposite based yeast biomass for gaseous formaldehyde degradation under visible light

        Synthesis of new hollow nano-composite photocatalysts based yeast biomass has been considered as afuture innovation technology to control air pollution. This work demonstrates that a green,environmentally friendly, sustainable, and facile hydrothermal carbonization route of low-cost andrenewable yeast biomass used to fabricate natural doping N-colloidal carbon spheres (NCSs) as a hardtemplate for hollow N-TiO2/MnO2. The presence of natural doping nitrogen serves as a stabilizer andreductant. Hence, the yeast provided a solid frame with deposits nitrogen to form the hybrid N/yeastprecursor. The resulting NCSs were obtained by hydrothermal method at 180 C for 6 h. Thecharacterization was performed using SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. Itwas found that thefindings fully retained the morphology of the yeast cells and the size of the hollowspheres was about 1.5–2 mm. The results of catalytic test showed that the new hollow nanosphere NTiO2/MnO2 possessed a higher photodegradation activity for gaseous formaldehyde under visibleirradiation than the commercial TiO2, due to their higher surface area (160 m2 g 1), hollow structure andsuperior reducibility. Its catalytic efficiency was attained to be more than 90%, which is about 10 timeshigher than that of the conventional catalyst TiO2–P25.
