        Study on the thermoelectric properties of porous Bi-Te films deposited using thermal evaporation on AAO template

        The application of thermoelectric films is limited to retain the temperature gradient. In this study, the Bi-Te films are deposited on the AAO template with a pore size of 100 nm using thermal evaporation. The results show that the conductive types of the Bi-Te film are tuned by source temperature. The power factor of the p-type porous film decreases 36% by comparing to that of the p-type nonporous film (1020 μW/mK2 at 250 °C). Meanwhile, the temperature difference in the porous device is maintained and is approximately 5.0 °C. Thus, the maximum output power is achieved in the porous device (about 25 pW), which is 5 times higher than that of the nonporous device. This provides a method to improve the conversion efficiency of thermoelectric film device by maintaining the temperature difference by using porous structure.

        An In situ Forming Hydrogel Based on Photo-Induced Hydrogen Bonding

        Stimulus-induced in situ forming hydrogels possess the characteristics of easy management and minimal invasiveness via simple injection at target sites with a liquid and easy forming bulk gels. In the present study, a photoreactive monomer, N'-(2-nitrobenzyl)-N-acryloyl glycinamide (NBNAGA) was introduced to modify polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel preparation with stimuli responsiveness. Firstly, poly(acrylamide-co-N'-(2-nitrobenzyl)-N-acryloyl glycinamide), P(AM-co-NBNAGA), copolymer solution was prepared via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using the monomers mixture of AM, NBNAGA, and N,N'- methylene bis-acrylamide (BIS). The obtained polymer solution with viscous, transparent, and flowable appearance contained weak single hydrogen bonding and slight chemical crosslinking in a microscopic perspective. Secondly, without further purification, after irradiation using UV light at 365 nm, poly(acrylamide-co-N-acryloyl glycinamide) (P(AM-co-NAGA)) hydrogel conveniently in situ formed due to the cleavage of o-nitrobenzyl groups and the corresponding emergency of dual hydrogen bonding among “uncaged” dual amide moieties. P(AM-co-NAGA) hydrogel depicted both favorable temperature sensitivity and self-healing properties, then the heating induced in vitro release profiles of doxorubicin (DOX) was analyzed.

        Novel Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Star Polymer Surface-Crosslinked with Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

        Novel organic/inorganic hybrid star polymer was prepared dually crosslinked within inner-core via divinylbenzene (DVB) and outer-surface via octafunctional polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). Core cross-linked star polymers bearing dialkynyl-terminated polystyrene arms, (dialkynyl-PS)n-CCL, were synthesized at first by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of DVB using α,α-dialkynyl-terminated PS macroinitiator, followed by the subsequent fractionation. Under high dilution conditions, (dialkynyl-PS)n-CCL was subjected to surface cross-linking with octa(3- azidopropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, POSS-(N3)8, via click reaction, affording POSS-functionalized hybrid polymer doubly cross-linked within core and surface regions, SCL-(PS)n-CCL. FT-IR, 1H NMR, GPC, and elemental analysis results revealed that on average, the obtained hybrid polymer possesses a cross-linked PDVB inner core, ~14 linear PS arms (the MW per arm of 5.1 kDa), and ~4-5 POSS moieties at outer surface. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that after surface cross-linking the thermal stability of SCL-(PS)n-CCL is considerably improved. This work provides a proof-of-concept example for the preparation of dually cross-linked hybrid star polymer, which represents a novel category of organic/inorganic composite materials with unique chain architectures.

        High-throughput Fabrication of Chitosan/Poly(ethylene oxide) Nanofibers by Modified Free Surface Electrospinning

        It is very difficult to electrospin pure chitosan (CS) due to the repulsive forces between its ionic groups producedin the electrospinning process, resulting in the formation of nanofibers by blending CS with other natural or syntheticpolymers for electrospinning. In this research work, a high-throughput fabrication of CS/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)nanofibers were obtained using a modified free surface electrospinning (MFSE), which contained a titanium solutionreservoir with thick smooth edges. Effects of the concentrations of acetic acid (AA), CS and PEO on the conductivity andviscosity of spinning solutions as well as the morphology, crystallinity and yield of CS/PEO nanofibers were investigated. And the fabrication mechanism of MFSE was studied by simulating the electric field distribution using Maxwell 3D due tothe importance of electric field distribution in the spinning process. The simulation results of electric field were in keepingwith the experimental data and indicated the MFSE could produce a lot of high-quality CS/PEO nanofibers.

        Dissecting the meteorological and genetic factors affecting rice grain quality in Northeast China

        Background The Northeast Plain of China, which is an important region for the production of high grain quality rice in China. However, the grain quality of the rice produced varies across this region, even for the same cultivar. Objective In order to explore the meteorological factors that have the greatest infuence on quality and the transcriptional level diferences between diferent cultivars and diferent locations at grain flling stage. Methods We grew eight rice cultivars in three locations in Northeast China during two growing seasons (2017 and 2018). We recorded meteorological conditions, including air temperature, air temperature range, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) during the grain-flling stage of each cultivar, and analyzed the grain quality of those eight cultivars. Results Across all eight cultivars, meteorological factors had a stronger efect on eating quality than genotype, while genotype had a stronger efect on milling quality. Of the three environmental factors assessed, PAR was signifcantly correlated with the most grain quality traits. Using RNA-sequencing analysis, we identifed 573 environment-specifc DEGs (Diferentially Expressed Genes), and 119 genotype-specifc DEGs; 11 DEGs were responsive to genotype×environment interactions. These DEGs were involved in many key metabolic processes. Conclusion Our results indicated that interactions among environmental factors, especially PAR, afected rice quality in Northeast China. Further analyses of the DEGs identifed herein may provide useful information for future breeding programs aiming to develop high grain quality rice varieties suitable for cultivation across Northeast China.
