        Korea Red Ginseng Alters Electroencephalogram Spectra of Sleep-Wake Stage in Rats

        The present investigation was performed to evaluate the homeostatic regulation of sleep architecture by the ethanol extract of Korea red ginseng (KRG), since the available data were often controversial. In addition, it was also interested in whether the sleep-wake stages were differently affected by low and high doses of KRG. Each adult Wistar male rat was implanted with a transmitter for recording EEG and activity via telemetry. After one week of surgery, polygraphic signs of undisturbed sleep-wake activities were recorded for 12 h (between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm) after KRG administration. KRG (10 and 100 mg/kg) increased non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep as well as total sleep. The total percentages of wakefulness were decreased comparably. KRG (10 mg/kg) decreased the power density of the ${\delta}-wave$ (0.75-4.5 Hz) and increased ${\alpha}-wave$ (8.0-13.0 Hz) in the NREM and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. KRG also decreased ${\delta}-wave$ power density in wake time. However, KRG (100 mg/kg) increased ${\delta}-wave$ and decreased ${\theta}-wave$ (5.0-9.0 Hz) power density in wake time, while showed little effect on the power density in NREM and REM sleep. In conclusion, low and high doses of KRG increase spontaneous sleep and NREM sleep and differently regulate the EEG spectra in REM and NREM sleep.

      • Magnolol enhances pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors: possible involvement of GABAergic systems

        <P>This study was performed to investigate whether magnolol enhances pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors through the GABAergic systems. Magnolol prolonged the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital. In addition, magnolol increased chloride influx in primary cultured cerebellar granule cells. The expression of the GABA<SUB>A</SUB> receptor &agr;-subunit was increased selectively by magnolol, but magnolol had no effect on the abundance of &bgr;- or &ggr;-subunits. The expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) was not influenced by magnolol. It is suggested that magnolol may enhance pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors through the activation of GABAergic systems. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

      • Altered Renal Expression of Aquaporin Water Channels and Sodium Transporters in Rats with Two-Kidney, One-Clip Hypertension

        <P><I>Aims:</I> To determine whether the renal regulation of aquaporin (AQP) water channels and sodium transporters are altered in 2-kidney, 1-clip (2K1C) hypertension. <I>Methods:</I> Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. They were made 2K1C hypertensive for 1 week. The renal expression of AQPs and sodium transporters was determined by semiquantitative immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. The activity of adenylyl cyclase was measured by stimulated generation of cAMP. <I>Results:</I> Systolic blood pressure was increased in 2K1C rats. Experimental rats revealed impaired urinary concentration in association with increased urine volume. Urinary sodium excretion also increased. The expression of AQP1-3 was decreased in the clipped kidney compared with the control kidney, whereas it was unchanged in the non-clipped kidney. The adenylyl cyclase activity provoked by arginine vasopressin, sodium fluoride or forskolin was blunted in the clipped kidney, but remained unaltered in the contralateral kidney. The expressions of the Na,K-ATPase α1-subunit, type 3 Na<SUP>+</SUP>/H<SUP>+</SUP> exchanger, Na-K-2Cl cotransporter and epithelial sodium channels were decreased in the clipped kidney, while remaining unchanged in the non-clipped kidney. <I>Conclusion:</I> The downregulation of AQPs and major sodium transporters/channels in the clipped kidney may play a role in the urinary concentration defect and impaired sodium reabsorption in 2K1C hypertension.</P><P>Copyright © 2009 S.         Triclosan 과 Ursodesoxycholic acid 배합세치제가 치은염완화 및 치석형성억제에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

        The aim of this study was to examine the effect of dentifrice containing 0.3% triclosan and 0.02% ursodesoxycholic acid(UDCA) on the reduction effect of gingivitis and calculus formation. The study participants was composed of 70 women for examining gingivitis and 40 men and women for examining calculus formation. All participants were aged 20-24 years. Participants and investigators were blinded to group assignment and followed for 12 weeks on gingivitis and for 4 weeks on calculus formation. We also investigated adsorbed/remaining concentration of triclosan of dentifrice dentifrice containing 0.3% triclosan and 0.02% UDCA on hydroxyapatite disk by laboratory study. Obtained results were as follows: 1. Adsorbed concentration and remaining concentration of triclosan in dentifrice on hyroxyapatite disk was increased about 70% and 9C% respectively by addition of UDCA(P<0.01). 2. After 12 weeks of use, gingivitis index was significantly reduced(P<0.05) among participants using dentifrice containing 0.3% triclosan and 0.02% UDCA while difference of gingivitis index of control group was not significant(P>0.05). 3. After 4 weeks of use, claculus formation was significantly reduced among participants using dentifrice containing 0.3% triclosan and 0.02% UDCA compared to the control group(P<0.05).

        Analysis of the Genome Sequence of Strain GiC-126 of Gloeostereum incarnatum with Genetic Linkage Map

        Gloeostereum incarnatum has edible and medicinal value and was first cultivated and domesticated in China. We sequenced the G. incarnatum monokaryotic strain GiC-126 on an Illumina HiSeq X Ten system and obtained a 34.52-Mb genome assembly sequence that encoded 16,895 predicted genes. We combined the GiC-126 genome with the published genome of G. incarnatum strain CCMJ2665 to construct a genetic linkage map (GiC-126 genome) that had 10 linkage groups (LGs), and the 15 assembly sequences of CCMJ2665 were integrated into 8 LGs. We identified 1912 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci and detected 700 genes containing 768 SSRs in the genome; 65 and 100 of them were annotated with gene ontology (GO) terms and KEGG pathways, respectively. Carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) were identified in 20 fungal genomes and annotated; among them, 144 CAZymes were annotated in the GiC-126 genome. The A mating-type locus (MAT-A) of G. incarnatum was located on scaffold885 at 38.9 cM of LG1 and was flanked by two homeodomain (HD1) genes, mip and beta-fg. Fourteen segregation distortion markers were detected in the genetic linkage map, all of which were skewed toward the parent GiC-126. They formed three segregation distortion regions (SDR1-SDR3), and 22 predictive genes were found in scaffold1920 where three segregation distortion markers were located in SDR1. In this study, we corrected and updated the genomic information of G. incarnatum. Our results will provide a theoretical basis for fine gene mapping, functional gene cloning, and genetic breeding the follow-up of G. incarnatum.

        ASESDP : An Efficient Service Discovery Protocol in Pervasive Computing Environments

        Service discovery is the technology of finding needed services in networks, and a key point in pervasive computing environments. This paper presents a novel service discovery protocol: ASESDP(AIP and SRR Enhanced Service Discovery Protocol). In ASESDP, tow schemes are proposed to enhance its performance: AIP(Advertisement Information Piggybacked) and SRR(Shortest Reply Route). In AIP, parts of advertisement information are piggybacked in the service reply packet, which makes the advertisement information propagating along the reply path, and spreads its transmission area. In SRR, in order to reduce the service response time, the shortest reply route is chosen to forward the service reply packet to the source node sending the service request. With the theoretical analysis and Glomosim simulation results, it is verified that ASESDP can reduce the number of service request packets, save the response time, and improve the efficiency of service discovery.

        The effects of substrates on the solid phase crystallization of the low temperature annealed LPCVD amorphous silicon(a-Si) films were studied. A-Si films 1500Å. thick were deposited at 545℃ on the three different substrates, SiO_(2) covered Si wafers, Quartz and high temperature glass. A-Si films were annealed for up to 156 hours at 560℃ in the evacuated LPCVD reactor. The degree of crystallization was measured by X-ray diffraction. Isochronal annealing was performed from 550℃ to 600℃ at intervals of 10℃ for 72 hours. Finally TFTs were fabricated on two different substrates and their characteristics were compared.

        Experimental and mechanism research on volatilization characteristics of HCl in desulfurization wastewater evaporation process using high temperature flue gas

        Due to the promulgation of “water pollution control action plan” in China, zero liquid discharge of desulfurization wastewater has become a new trend for water pollution control in power plants. The HCl volatilization in desulfurization wastewater evaporation process is the key problem that may influence the application of evaporation technology, so experiment was carried out in self-made experimental system. The effects of temperature, pH, Cl− concentration, total dissolved solids and main metal ions on HCl volatilization were explored. Results have shown that HCl volatilization increases respectively from 5.42% to 20.43% and 2.22% to 9.18% with the increasing temperature from 180 °C to 380 °C in two kinds of actual desulfurization wastewater evaporation process. When pH < 7, Cl− concentration is the main influencing factor on HCl volatilization; the higher Cl− concentration is, the higher HCl volatilization will be observed. While pH > 7, pH becomes the dominant factor, increasing pH will inhibit HCl volatilization; Mechanism of HCl volatilization was studied simultaneously by XRD and TGA. Gaseous HCl mainly comes from the combination of free H+ and Cl−, hydrolysis of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in liquid phase and hydrolysis of hydrate in high temperature solid phase; Ways to inhibit HCl volatilization in process were put forward according to the experimental results. The use of Ca(OH)2 to adjust the pH of desulfurization wastewater to 9.0–10.0 can inhibit HCl volatilization economically and efficiently. This study provides the key data for the application of flue gas evaporation technology under high temperature. The research results have important theoretical and practical values for the engineering practice of this technology.

        Therapeutic Effects of Ginseng on Psychotic Disorders

        Ginseng, the root of Panax species, a well-known herbal medicine has been used as a traditional medicine for thousands of years and is now a popular and worldwide used natural medicine. Ginseng has been used primarily as a tonic to invigorate weak bodies to help the restoration of homeostasis in a wide range of pathological conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, immune deficiency and hepatotoxicity. Although conclusive clinical data in humans is still missing, recent research results have suggested that some of the active ingredients ginseng exert beneficial effects on central nervous system (CNS) disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting it could be used in treatment of psychotic disorders. Data from neural cell cultures and animal studies contribute to the understanding of these mechanisms that involve inhibitory effects on stress-induced corticosterone level increasing and modulating of neurontransmitters, reducing $Ca^{2+}$ over-influx, scavenging of free radicals and counteracting excitotoxicity. In this review, we focused on recently reported medicinal effects of ginseng and summarized the possibility of its applications on psychotic disorders.
