        The chromosome study was performed in some species on the Korean Libellulidae by using squash techniques and lactopropionic orcein stain in order to define species relationship between them. The numerical and morphological differences were shown in the chromsome between the species of the stages of spermatocyte metaphase. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The pattern of standard chromosome number in these species is divided into two groups; Orthetrum albistylum speciosum (UHLER), Orthetrum triangrlare melanina (SELYS), Rhyothemis fulignosa HAGEN are 13 in the haploid chromosome number. But, Crocothemis servilia servilia DRURY and Synoetrum eroticum (SELYS) are 12. 2. The shape of chromosome in these specie in divided into two groups; O. albistylum, S. eroticum eroticum, R. fulignosa, O. triangulare melania are bar or clover in shape at the spermatocyte metaphase. These species seem to be holocentric chromosome. On the other hand, C. servilia servilia is gloval and this species has monocentric chromosome. 3. The sex chromosome of five species ( O. albistylum speciosum, O. Triangulare melania, R. fulignosa, C. servilla servilia, S. eroticum eroticum ) are XO type. 4. Three species ( O. albistylum speciosum, O. Triangulare melania, S. eroticum eroticum ) shows the fragment chromosome in the spermatocyte metaphase. As the results, five species on the Korean Libellulidae (O. albistylum speciosum, O. triangulare melania, R. fulignosa, C. servilla servilia, S. eroticum eroticum ) is similar to each other in the external morphology, But, in the analysis of chromosome, these species is different to some degree.

        활성탄 고정층에 대한 Tharonil의 흡착특성에 관한 연구

        To obtain the breakthrough characteristics for the design of fixed bed adsorption plant, adsorption experiment on granular activated carbon was performed with tharonil in the fixed bed. The pore diffusivity and surface diffusivity of tharonil estimated by the concentration-time curve and adsorption isotherm were D_s=2.825×10 exp (-9) ㎠/s, D_P=1.26×10 exp (-5) ㎠/s, respectively. From comparison of the pore diffusivity and surface diffusivity, it was found that surface diffusion was controlling step for intrapaticle diffusion. The breakthrough curve predicted by constant pattern-linear driving force model were shown to agree with the experimental results. The surface diffusivity and film mass transfer coefficient had no effect on the theoretical breakthrough curve but the adsorption isotherm had fairly influence on it. Appearance time of breakthrough curve is faster with the increase flow rate and inflow concentration of liquid. The utility of granular activated carbon is enhanced with the increase of bed height and with the decrease of inflow rate.

      • Expression of EGFR and follicular dendritic markers in lymphoid follicles from patients with Castleman's disease.

        <P>This study investigated the useful morphologic and immunophenotypic findings for the diagnosis of Castleman's disease (CD). We focused on the distribution and expression of follicular dendritic cells (FDC) in lymphoid follicles from patients with CD. Eleven CD cases of the hyaline vascular (HV) variant and six cases of the plasma cell (PC) variant were studied using tissue microarray and paraffin resistant monoclonal antibodies CD21, CD35, and EGFR, a new novel marker of FDC, as well as an antibody against human herpes virus 8 (HHV8). Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was detected by means of in situ hybridization with a fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled EBV-encoded RNA (EBER) specific oligonucleotide. The FDC network of the PC variant (n=4) was similar to that seen in normal or reactive germinal centers. In contrast, all HV variants and 2 cases of the PC variant were either expanded, disrupted, or exhibited multiple tight collections of FDC both in germinal centers and in mantle zone lymphocytes. The expanded mantle zone lymphocytes were CD20+, Bcl2+, PAX5+, and MUM1- with less number of CD3+ T cells admixed. Other features of the HV variant included follicular regression and vascular ingrowth of the germinal centers, whereas features of the PC variant were follicular hyperplasia and interfollicular plasmacytosis. In addition, EBV infection was positive in three CD cases, and one case had co-expression of HHV8 and EBV infection. Taken together, we found immunophenotypic differences of mantle zone lymphocytes and FDC network patterns of lymphoid follicles in CD. Thus, we conclude that these differences are relevant for the differential diagnosis of the two histopathologic variants of CD.</P>

      • Absence of activating mutations of <i>CXCR4</i> in pituitary tumours

        <P>Summary</P><P>Objective </P><P>Mutations of the <I>gsp</I> oncogene are responsible for 30–40% of GH-producing pituitary adenomas and 10% of nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs). However, the pathogenetic mechanism of the remaining pituitary tumours still remains to be identified. Recently, the interaction between the chemokine stromal cell-derived factor 1 and its receptor CXCR4 was found to play an important role in GH production and cell proliferation in various pituitary adenoma cell lines. As CXCR4 is a Gi-coupled chemokine receptor, its constitutive activating mutations may be involved in pituitary tumour formation by cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-independent, ERK-related pathways.</P><P>Patients and methods </P><P>We investigated whether somatic activating-mutations of <I>CXCR4</I> might be a possible tumourigenic mechanism for <I>gsp</I>-negative GH-secreting pituitary adenomas and NFPAs. Direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction-amplified products for coding exons of <I>CXCR4</I> were performed using genomic deoxyribonucleic acid samples from 37 GH-producing pituitary tumour tissues that were negative for the <I>gsp</I> mutation and 14 CXCR4 expressing NFPAs.</P><P>Results </P><P>Immunohistochemical analyses and double immunofluorescent staining of sectioned paraffin-embedded pituitary tissues revealed that CXCR4 is highly expressed in GH-producing pituitary adenomas and NFPAs. Direct sequencing showed that two synonymous mutations in exon 2 (87 C > T and 414 C > T) were detected in 4 out of 51 pituitary tumours.</P><P>Conclusion </P><P>Our results indicate that an activating mutation of the <I>CXCR4</I> may not be a common pathogenetic mechanism in GH-producing pituitary tumours and NFPAs.</P>

        Orbital floor fracture repair with implants: a retrospective study

        Background: Although prompt surgery after an orbital fracture is preferable, the actual timing of surgery in real-world settings varies. Therefore, this study investigated the outcomes of implant surgery for inferior orbital wall fractures by comparing three groups according to the time interval between the injury and surgery. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of patients' medical charts and initial computed tomography images from 2009 to 2020. The time to treatment was chosen by patients or their guardians based on the patients' comorbidities and the physician's explanation. The patients were divided into three groups according to the time of surgery (group 1: 3-7 days, group 2: 8-14 days, group 3: 15 or more days). Data were collected on age, the time interval until surgery, the dimensions of the defect, the operation time, the follow-up period, and the postoperative paresthesia score (ranging from 0 to 10). The outcomes were evaluated using a 4-point scale: 4=good (no complications), 3=fair (no subjective symptoms), 2=poor (remaining paresthesia), and 1=very poor (strabismus and/or enophthalmos). Results: The study included 85 patients with unilateral fractures who underwent surgery from 3 to 93 days after injury. The overall score distribution of the surgical outcomes was as follows: good=63, fair=7, poor=6, and very poor=9. The three groups showed no significant differences in the transverse dimension of the injury (p=0.110) or the anteroposterior dimension (p=0.144). In groups 1, 2, and 3, the postoperative outcome scores were 3.84±0.37, 3.63±0.87, and 2.93±1.33 (p=0.083), and the percentage of patients with good outcomes was 84%, 81.25%, and 57.14%, respectively. Conclusion: Performing surgery using an artificial implant within 2 weeks of the injury showed better outcomes and fewer postoperative complications than when treatment was delayed.

        Tubularized Penile-Flap Urethroplasty Using a Fasciocutaneous Random Pedicled Flap for Recurrent Anterior Urethral Stricture

        This report describes the use of a tubularized random flap for the curative treatment of recurrent anterior urethral stricture. Under the condition of pendulous lithotomy and suprapubic cystostomy, the urethral stricture was removed via a midline ventral penile incision followed by elevation of the flap and insertion of an 18-Fr catheter. Subcutaneous buried interrupted sutures were used to reapproximate the waterproof tubularized neourethra and to coapt with the neourethra and each stump of the urethra, first proximally and then distally. The defect of the penile shaft was covered by advancement of the surrounding scrotal flap. The indwelling catheter was maintained for 21 days. A 9 month postoperative cystoscopy showed no flap necrosis, no mechanical stricture, and no hair growth on the lumen of the neourethra. The patient showed no voiding discomfort 6 months after the operation. The advantages of this procedure are the lack of need for microsurgery, shortening of admission, the use of only spinal anesthesia (no general anesthesia), and a relatively short operative time. The tubularized unilateral penile fasciocutaneous flap should be considered an option for initial flap urethroplasty as a curative technique.

        Discrepancy of the location of depression on the soft tissue and the bone in isolated zygomatic arch fracture

        Background: When performing reduction of zygomatic arch fractures, locating the inward portion of the fracture can be difficult. Therefore, this study investigated the discrepancy between the locations of the depression on the soft tissue and bone and sought to identify how to determine the inward portion of the fracture on the patient's face. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of chart with isolated zygomatic arch fractures of type V in the Nam and Jung classification from March 2013 to February 2022. For consistent measurements, a reference point (RP), at the intersection between a vertical line passing through the end point of the root of the ear helix in the patient's side-view photograph and a transverse line passing through the longest horizontal axis of the external meatus opening, was established. We then measured the distance between the RP and the soft tissue depression in a portrait and the bone depression on a computed tomography (CT) scan. The discrepancy between these distances was quantified. Results: Among the patients with isolated zygomatic arch fractures, only those with a fully visible ear on a side-view photograph were included. Twenty-four patients met the inclusion criteria. There were four types of discrepancies in the location of the soft tissue depression compared to the bone depression: type I, forward and upward discrepancy (7.45 and 3.28 mm), type II, backward and upward (4.29 and 4.21 mm), type III, forward and downward (10.06 and 5.15 mm), and type IV, backward and downward (2.61 and 3.27 mm). Conclusion: This study showed that discrepancy between the locations of the depressions on the soft tissue and bone exists in various directions. Therefore, applying the transverse and vertical distances measured from a bone image of the CT scan onto the patient's face at the indicated RP will be helpful for predicting the reduction location.

        In this study, an implicit one-dimensional model, DWRM(Dynamic Wave Routing Model) was developed by using the four-point weighted difference method. By applying the developed model to the Keum River, the parameters were calibrated and the model applicability was tested through the comparison between observed and computed water levels. In addition, the effects of the construction of an estuary dam to the flood wave were estimated as a result of the model application. The results of the study can be summarized as follows; 1. The roughness coefficients were evaluated by comparison between observed and computed water level at Jindu, Gyuam and Ganggyeung station in 1985. The Root Mean Squares for water level differences between observed and computed values were 0.10, 0.11, 0.29m and the differences of peak flood levels were 0.07, 0.02, 0. 07m at each station. Since the evaluated roughness coefficients were within the range of 0.029-0. 041 showing the realistic value for the general condition of rivers, it can be concluded that the calibration has been completed. 2. By the application of model using the calibrated roughness coefficients, the R. M. S. for water level differences were 0.16, 0.24, 0. 24m and the differences of peak flood level were 0.17, 0.13, 0.08 m at each station. The arrival time of peak flood at each station and the stage-discharge relationship at Gongju station agreed well with the observed values. Therefore, it was concluded that the model could be applied to the Keum River. 3. The model was applied under conditions before and after the construction of the estuary dam. The 50-year frequency flood which had 7,800m<sup>3</sup>/sec of peak flood was used as the upstream condition, and the spring tide and the neap tide were used as the downstream condition. As the results of the application, no change of the peak flood level was showed in the upper reaches of 19.2km upstream from the estuary dam. For areas near 9.6km upstream from the estuary dam, the change of the peak flood level under the condition before and after the construction was 0.2m. However considering the assumptions for the boundary conditions of downstream, the change of peak flood level would be decreased.
