同種肺組織 및 Adjuvant 反復注射家兎의 肺病變에 關한 病理組織學的硏究
金敎英 中央醫學社 1968 中央醫學 Vol.15 No.4
It is well known that dead or damaged tissue acts as an irritant to the individual and can cause an inflammatory lesion, but the mechanism concerning to it is yet unknown. An experiment on rabbits was carried out to observe if any inflammatory lesion could occur in them by repeatedly injecting them with homologous lung tissue and Freund's complete adjuvant, and then to explore the mechanism for it. 4 groups of .animals were injected subcutaneously with Freund's complete adjuvant, lung tissue, lung tissue plus Freund's complete adjuvant and brain tissue plus Freund's complete adjuvant, respectively. One more animal groups were injected with physiological saline solution, as normal control. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The lungs of the main animal group, which received lung tissue plus Freund's complete adjuvant, showed marked histopathological changes, namely, interstitial pneumonitis (consisting of small round cell infiltration to alveolar septum and stroma, and proliferation of fibroblasts), granulomatous inflammation and thickening of small arterial walls. 2) The lungs of the first control animal group, which received Freund's complete adjuvant only, also showed some changes resembling those of the main group, but in lesser degree. 3) The lungs of the second control animal group, which received lung tissue only, showed slight changes of the same type, but in far lesser degree as compared with the former two groups. 4) While the lungs of the third control animal group, which received brain (instead of . lung) plus Freund's complete adjuvant, showed lesser inflammatory changes of the

Rounded atelectasis is a focal, pleural-based lesion that is the result of pleural and subpleural scarring and atelectasis of the adjacent lung tissue. We experienced a case of asbestosassociated rounded atelectasis that had developed in a 50-year-old male. When examined with routine chest radiography, the patient was shown to have an asymptomatic chest mass. Computed tomography showed a pleural-based mass with a curvilinear shape about 4.2 cm in greatest diameter in the medial basal segment of the right lower lobe. To exclude the possibility of malignancy the mass was excised by video-assisted thoracotomy. The mass was round and firm, and was gray and yellow in color. Microscopically, marked pleural fibrosis extended into the underlying lung parenchyme and then resulted in atelectasis. There are ferruginous bodies in dense fibrous pleura.
Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma with Heterotopic Ossification
김교영,김진국,김태성,한정호 대한의학회 2009 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.24 No.3
Pulmonary adenocarcinoma is a common malignancy that often involves calcification; however, bone formation in primary lung adenocarcinoma is extremely rare. In ten cases of primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma with heterotopic ossification, we detected immunoreactivity against TGF-β1, osteopontin, osteocalcin and Runx2 in the fibroblastic stroma and tumor cells within the area of ossification. Our results suggest that in primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma, heterotopic ossification occurs via intramembranous bone formation. To our knowledge, only 11 other cases of pulmonary adenocarcinoma with heterotopic ossification have been reported. Here, we present ten cases of pulmonary adenocarcinoma showing heterotopic ossification with a description of previously published results and the histogenesis of heterotopic bone formation.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is characterized by a hamartomatous proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the lung, mediastium, and abdomen. In the lung, an abnormal proliferation of smooth muscle is seen along the airways, blood vessels, and lymphatics, resulting in honeycombing of the lung. It occurs in 0.1-1% of tuberous sclerosis (TSC) patients. Micronodular pneumocyte hyperplasia (MNPH) is a rare but distinctive pulmonary manifestation of TSC, and appears to be a hamartomatous proliferation of the type II pneumocytes. We report a case of pulmonary LAM and MNPH associated with TSC and bilateral renal angiomyolipoma in a 26-year-old woman. Immunohistochemically, the spindle cells of LAM were positive for HMB-45, but the type II pneumocytes of MNPH were negative.
Giant Cystic Chondroid Hamartoma

We report a case of huge pulmonary chondroid hamartoma with multilocular cysts in a 38-yr-old male patient. The lobectomy specimen of the left lower lobe showed a large multilocular cystic mass, 11.5×10 cm in size. The mass had thin-walled, variable-sized cysts and areas of solid cartilaginous small nodules in the interstitium, which occupied the superior segment and the upper portion of the basal segment. There was no connection with bronchus or vessel. Microscopically, the cysts and cleft-like spaces were lined by ciliated columnar epithelium and the solid components were composed of cartilage, myxohyalinized connective tissue, and adipose tissue. Also seen were foci of calcification within the sclerotic stroma.

BACKGROUND: Contamination of source water by odorous compounds are one of the problems related to the water quality management, especially in Korea where surface water is used as drinking water. Geosmin (1, 10-trans-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol) and 2-MIB (2-methyl isoborneol : 1,2,7,7-tetramethyl-exo-bicycloheptan-2-ol) are commonly recognized earthy-musty odor compounds produced by algae causing serious problems to the drinking water purification facilities. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, spatial and temporal distribution of the odor compounds, geosmin and 2-MIB were investigated along with the development of phytoplankton in the Daechung reservoir from July 2012 to October 2013. CONCLUSION: Concentrations and frequencys of detection of both compounds increased from April to October which were related to cyanobacterial bloom periods. However, concentrations of odor compounds were not related to the number of cyanobacteria. Concentrations of both cyanobacteria and geosmin showed similar trends with depth. Pearson correlation analyses showed that geosmin concentration exhibited significant correlation with the count of Anabaena macrospora and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. On the other hand, 2-MIB concentration showed a significant correlation with the count of Anabaena smithii.

The mediastinal parathyroid cyst is a very rare cause of space occupying lesions in the mediastinum. We report a case of a non-functioning mediastinal parathyroid cyst that occurred in a 42 year-old male. He suffered from foreign body sensation of the throat whenever he was in the supine position. A chest computed tomography showed a round cyst with a narrow base attached to trachea. It was white and tan, thin-walled semi-transparent cyst containing yellow and tan serous fluid. Microscopically it was characterized by a thin fibrous wall lined with a single or double layer of uniform cells with clear cytoplasm and small nuclei. The lining cells were immunopositive for chromogranin A.

The recent WHO classification has recognized mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma (MTSCC) as a distinct entity of renal cell carcinoma, exhibiting a mixed pattern of tubules and a surrounding spindle cell proliferation within a myxoid stroma, with low-grade nuclear features. A 51-year-old woman had an incidentally discovered renal mass. Radiologic examination revealed a large, well defined mass in the lower pole of the right kidney; a right radical nephrectomy was performed. Imprint cytologic smears from fresh surgical specimens showed cellular, cohesive clusters with thick, broad trabecular arrangements and branching structures. On high power fields, the tumor was composed of round-to-oval low-grade nuclei with vesicular chromatin and small nucleoli. The tumor cells had indistinct borders and pale, eosinophilic cytoplasm, In some areas, round-to-elongated tubular structures and spindle cell patterns were noted. Chronic inflammatory cell infiltration was noted, along with a mucinous back-ground and occasional psammoma bodies. Neither significant cytologic atypia nor mitosis was seen.
