Members of the genus Brassica, which are known as oil crops or cruciferous vegetables, are widely cultivated in Canada, Australia, Asian and Europe. Because Brassica species have high yields, are well adapted to their environments, and are self-incompatible, the germplasm is abundant. Previous studies have reported abundant genetic diversity even within Brassica subspecies. In Korea, fresh cabbage leaves are eaten with roast meat, and to meet the current popular demand, new varieties are being increasingly bred. To determine the genetic diversity and relationships among the cabbage vegetables in Korea, we evaluated the genetic variation of 18 accessions based on 5S and 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences. We detected many variable nucleotide sites, especially in the 5S rRNA gene sequences. Because the length of the 18S rRNA gene might influence the dissimilarity rate statistics, we used both the 5S and 18S sequences to analyze the phylogenetic relationships. S7 (B. oleracea) showed the most distant phylogenetic relationship with the other Brassica species. Interestingly, B2 (B. oleracea), B15, and B18 (B. campestris) have three different types of leaf profiles, and were divided into one group, and the other Brassica species formed another group. Statistical analysis of interspecies and intraspecies genetic distances revealed that B. campestris L. showed higher genetic diversity than B. oleracea L. This work provides additional data that facilitates the evaluation of the genetic variation and relationships among Brassica species. The results could be used in functional plant breeding programs to improve Brassica crops.
Intravascular Epithelioid Angiosarcoma in the Abdominal Aorta Mimicking an Infected Aneurysm
Woong Ki Park,Kyong Lin Park,Yo Seok Cho,Ahram Han,Sanghyun Ahn,Seung-Kee Min 대한혈관외과학회 2019 Vascular Specialist International Vol.35 No.4
Primary aortic angiosarcoma is very rare, and preoperative diagnosis is challenging with resultant poor prognosis. Angiosarcoma may mimic an infected aneurysm or a mural thrombus. Clinical suspicion of angiosarcoma is vital for an early diagnosis and proper surgical treatment, especially in cases with atypical rapid growth of an aortic abdominal aneurysm with a thrombotic mass. Herein, we report a case of angiosarcoma in the abdominal aorta mimicking an infected aneurysm and present computed tomography and positron emission tomography findings.

Folate conjugated poly(ester amine) for lung cancer therapy.
Arote, Rohidas B,Yoon, Mi-Kyong,Kim, Tae-Hee,Jere, Dhananjay,Jiang, Hu-Lin,Kim, You-Kyoung,Park, In-Kyu,Cho, Chong-Su American Scientific Publishers 2010 Journal of nanoscience and nanotechnology Vol.10 No.5

Folate conjugated poly(ester amine) (PEA) was prepared by reaction of folic acid with PEAs based on polycaprolactone (PCL) and low molecular weight polyethylenimine (LMW-PEI) with PEG as a linker. This novel gene carrier showed excellent physicochemical properties and relatively low cytotoxicity compared with PEI 25K. It showed excellent transfection efficiency through folate receptor mediated endocytosis.

This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPIO), on signal transduction by glucose and insulin in pancreatic β-cells. INS-1 cells were labeled in culture medium containing clinically approved SPIO for 24 h. Labeled and unlabeled cells were stimulated with glucose (25 mM) or insulin (0.1-1 ?M) for 12 h. The phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) and protein kinase B (AKT) and intracellular insulin protein levels were assessed by Western blotting. After labeling with increasing amounts of SPIO, cytotoxicity was not observed, yet the intracellular iron concentration increased in a dose-dependent manner. SPIO labeling (200 ?g Fe ml(-1)) induced a significant increase in ERK1/2 and AKT phosphorylation (labeled vs unlabeled, p < 0.05), but significantly reduced the glucose-stimulated phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and AKT and insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of AKT (labeled vs unlabeled, p < 0.05). The level of intracellular insulin protein was found to be lower in labeled cells than unlabeled cells (labeled vs unlabeled, p < 0.05). This study demonstrates that SPIO labeling alters some fundamental functional variables, at least in INS-1 cells, through modulation of the glucose- or insulin-induced activation of ERK1/2 and AKT, which leads to insulin biosynthesis.
