A polysaccharide fraction, AIP1, purified from Artemisia iwayomogi was shown to have immunomodulating and anti-tumor activities in mice. In order to determine how the AIP1 fraction exhibits the immunomodulating activity, the effect of the fraction on the apoptosis of mouse spleen cells was investigated. Treatment of the mouse spleen cells with the AIP1 fraction resulted ,in the suppression of apoptotic death and an extension of cell survival in culture, indicating that the fraction might modulate the death of spleen cells. Treatment of the mice with the AIP1 fraction in vivo also resulted in less apoptosis of the spleen cells, which indicates the physiological relevance of the anti-apoptosis effect of the fraction in vitro. A mouse gene array was used to determine the profile of the gene expression change showing a pattern of up- and down-regulated genes by the AIP1 treatment. This study provides preliminary information regarding the immunomodulatory mechanism of the AIP1 fraction.

Offshore remote-sensing wind extraction using SAR satellite image is an emerging and promising technology for offshore wind resource assessment. We compared our numerical weather prediction and offshore wind extraction from ENVISAT images around Korea offshore areas. A few comparison sets showed good agreement but more comparisons are required to draw application guideline on a statistical basis.
Cereblon as a Novel Prognostic Biomarker for Small Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Aims: Cereblon is a substrate receptor of the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex and functions as a metabolic regulator, directly interacting with AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) α1 and inhibiting AMPK activation. We raise a hypothesis that cereblon is a biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: We developed CRBN-specific monoclonal primary antibody to detect cereblon at the tissue samples (Korea patent). After immunocytochemical staining and Western blot assay, cereblon was quantitatively measured. We performed two development cohort studies to find out the role of cereblon as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for HCC. The cutoff of cereblon expression was set to be 2 folds comparing with that at the surrounding liver tissue. Results: One development cohort included 40 patients who underwent macroscopic curative resection for HCC of 7<sup>th</sup> AJCC stage I or II. The profiles of patients in stage I and II groups were similar each other. There was no significant difference in tumor recurrence (P=0.14) and patient survival (P=0.33) between the stage I and II groups. Higher cereblon expression was observed in 19 (47.5%). High cereblon expression group showed higher recurrence (P=0.017) and lower survival (P=0.025) rates than low cereblon expression group. The hazard ratio of cereblon was estimated to 3.5 (P=0.035). Another development cohort study for response treatment to sorafenib was performed, in which cereblon does not appear to be a reliable response biomarker so far. Conclusions: The post-resection prognostic impact of cereblon was greater than that of microvascular invasion in solitary HCCs. We think that cereblon can be an independent biomarker to predict post-resection prognosis even in patients with early or small HCCs. Further high-volume validation study is necessary to investigate the role of cereblon in HCC.
조리외식전공 대학생이 인지하는 전공적합성이 구직효능감에 미치는 영향- 멘토링의 조절효과를 중심으로 -

This study was to examine the effects of job-seeking efficacy of food & culinary arts students on their perceived person-major fit. This study was also intended to identify the roles of professor mentoring in relationship between their perceived person-major fit and job-seeking efficacy. The results of this study were as follows. First, Students’ person-major fit had significantly a effects on factors of job-seeking efficacy(specifically job-seeking goal, job-seeking skill, job-seeking motive) except job-seeking strength. Second, Mentoring of professor was not related in relationship between person-major fit and job-seeking efficacy. Finally, We suggested the limitation and direction of research in the future. 본 연구는 조리외식전공 대학생이 인지하고 있는 전공적합성이 구직효능감에 미치는 영향과 그들 간에 학생을 지도하는 교수의 멘토링이 어떠한 역할을 하는지를 규명하고자 하였다. 연구의 조사 대상은 4개의 수도권 소재의 2․3년제 대학교 중 공식적으로 지도교수와의 멘토링을 실시하는 대학교의 조리외식관련전공에서 졸업예정인 대학생 중에서 연구대상을 선정하였다. 수집된 설문은 SPSS 18.0을 활용하여 신뢰도 및 요인분석, 빈도분석, 상관관계분석, 단순회귀분석과 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학생들이 인지하는 개인-전공적합성은 구직강도를 제외한 구직목표, 구직동기, 구직기술에 유의미한 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 지도교수의 멘토링이 대학생들의 개인-전공적합성과 구직목표, 구직동기, 구직기술, 구직강도 간의 관계에 있어 모두 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 본 연구의 한계점 과 향후 연구 방향을 제시하였다.
Isolation and characterization of novel <i>Ty</i>1-<i>copia</i>-like retrotransposons from lily

<P> Species of the genus Lilium are well known for their large genomes. Although expansion of noncoding repeated DNA is believed to account for this genome size, retroelement del Ty3-gypsy is the only one described so far in the genus Lilium. We isolated Ty1-copia elements from Lilium longiflorum and named them LIREs (lily retrotransposons). The long terminal repeats, primer binding site, and polypurine tract sequences are highly similar among the LIRE elements, indicating that they are in the same lineage. Although the protein-coding regions were highly decayed, the sequence motifs of the integrase, reverse transcriptase, and RNase H domains were identifiable as belonging to the order of Ty1-copia elements. Phylogenetic analysis and primer binding site sequences revealed that these elements belonged to the Ale lineage among the six lineages of plant Ty1-copia elements. Base substitutions in the long terminal repeats estimated that the integration times of the LIRE Ty1-copia elements were between 0.7 and 5.5 mya. In situ hybridization showed that the LIRE elements were present in all the chromosomes of L. longiflorum and L. lancifolium, but absent in centromeres, telomeres, and 45S rRNA sites in both species. The LIRE elements were present very abundantly in species of the genus Lilium, but absent in other genera of the family Liliaceae, implying that the LIRE elements might have contributed to the expansion of the genome in the genus Lilium. </P>
