        Pulmonary inflammation caused by silica dioxide nanoparticles in mice via TXNIP/NLRP3 signaling pathway

        Background Silica dioxide nanoparticles (SiONPs) have been used for various medical applications, including therapeutics and imaging, and the use of SiONPs has increased gradually over the years. However, despite an increase in the use of SiONPs, not much is known about mechanism of action of SiONPs and their pulmonary toxicity. Objective The present study investigated the pulmonary toxicity of SiONPs and explored the underlying mechanism of action, primarily focusing on thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP)/NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) in SiONPs-treated mice. We investigated the toxic effects of SiONPs in the lung of BALB/c mice administered 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg SiONPs for 3 days. Results Exposure to SiONPs markedly increased inflammatory cell counts, including those of neutrophils and macrophages, and levels of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α in a dose-dependent manner in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Moreover, the inflammation was verified upon histopathological analysis. In addition, exposure to SiONPs increased the expression of TXNIP in a dose-dependent manner and, in turn, upregulated NLRP3 inflammasome proteins, which subsequently induced IL-1β production. Conclusion Collectively, exposure to SiONPs induced inflammation in the lungs of mice, which resulted in the activation of IL-1β production via the TXNIP-NLRP3 axis. Our results provide useful information on the pulmonary toxicity induced by SiONPs and provide insights into the underlying mechanism of action.

        The purpose of this study is to develop an air-passing soundproofing panel with more improved structure to reduce the CO2 emission and installation cost. To reduce the emission of CO2 ; it is suggested to choose low CO2 emission material relative to the aluminum and to reduce the materials by developing a specially designed air-passing soundproofing panel structure. First of all, we performed the flow analysis to predict the wind pressure according to the open angle of the air-passing soundproofing panel and the noise level analysis at the receiver point. To verify the simulation, a prototype of the soundproofing panel was made. The flow test in the wind tunnel and load test were performed. The economic evaluation for the installation of the air-passing soundproofing panel was performed and specifications of the installation was prepared. As the results of this research, it was verified that the wind load was reduced about 40% to that of the conventional one at 25m/s wind speed in the wind tunnel test. By applying the 4m span soundproofing wall with air-passing soundproofing panel and under the cost of 250 thousand won/m2 instead of the conventional 2m span panel, the installation cost will always be lowered than the conventional one in the combination of (60:40~50:50) conventional to air-passing soundproofing panel from the economic evaluation. The 20% reduction of CO2 was found by changing the 50% of aluminum soundproof panel to air-passing soundproofing panel.

        Analysis of Judicial Precedents Cases Regarding Skin Cancer from 1997 to 2017 in Republic of Korea

        Background: Both medical disputes and the incidence of skin cancer are increasing in Korea. Objective: The aim of this study was to figure out the medical litigation related to skin cancer and propose a method to prevent the medical disputes. Methods: Skin cancer-related judgments were searched by The Supreme Court of Korea’s Written Judgment Management System based on the keywords for skin cancer. The search system included sentenced cases at the Lower Courts, the Appellate Courts, and the Supreme Court from 1997 to 2017. Results: Seven cases were selected as the litigation cases related to skin cancer. Four cases (57.1%) presented malignant melanoma, while the rest presented squamous cell carcinoma, metastatic skin cancer, and peripheral T cell lymphoma (1 case in each). Four cases resulted in death from cancer metastasis, and 3 cases presented as sequelae. The legal issues related to the medical disputes could be categorized as follows: misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis, performance error, and lack of informed consent. Delayed diagnosis and lack of informed consent were the most common issues (n=4) in the precedents. Five cases (71.4%) were sentenced the awarded amounts to the plaintiff, including 2 cases of settlement decision. The average awarded amount was 42,553,644±27,567,455 Korean won. Conclusion: Physicians should pay attention to the cases of the skin cancer to prevent medical malpractice and disputes. The practices pertaining to proper diagnosis, treatment plans, and obtaining an informed consent should be followed during the course of treating skin cancer. (Ann Dermatol 31(3) 300∼306, 2019)

        제이피아이헬스케어(주)에 대한 사례연구

        본 연구는 제이피아이헬스케어(주)의 기업역사에 대해 창업자인 김삼조 회장의 경영 시기(1980~2002)와 2세 경영자인 김진원 사장의 경영 시기(2002~2019) 중에서 회사의성과에 중요한 영향을 미친 사건들을 연대기별로 선정하여 경영자의 관점에서 서술하였다. 특히 김진원 사장의 경영 시기 동안 진행되었던 주요 사건들에 대해 실제 의사결정을했던 경영자가 직접 그 배경과 의사결정 이유, 그리고 그에 따른 성과에 대해 직접 설명한 논문은 매우 드문 만큼 이번 연구의 가치가 높다고 판단하였다. 또한, 이번 연구에서는 김진원 사장이 기업성과에 중대한 영향을 미치는 주요 요소로서 자원기반관점 이론을바탕으로 경영자의 자질, 기업 내부와 연관된 사람과 조직, 그리고 기업 외부와 연관된시장전략들과 관련한 주요 사건들을 선정하여 서술하였다. 그러므로, 이번 연구를 통해 실제 중소기업을 성공적으로 경영했던 경영자가 그 기업의 역사 중 주요 사건들에 대해 타인들은 알 수 없는 의사결정 과정을 직접 서술함으로써다른 중소기업 경영자들에게 실무적인 시사점을 전달하고자 하였다. 특히 2세 경영자가창업자의 사후에 어려워진 기업의 위기상황을 잘 극복하여 결국 수출중심의 강한 중소기업으로 회사를 성장시켜 나갔던 주요 과정들에 관한 서술은 유사한 상황에 있는 중소기업경영자들이나 가업을 물려받을 2세 경영자들에게 많은 시사점을 제시할 수 있을 것으로판단하였다. This study examines the history of JPI Healthcare during the period of leadership by the founder, Mr. Sam-Jo Kim (1980~2002), and by his successor, Mr. Jin-Won Kim (2002~2019). Mr. Jin-Won Kim carefully selected some key events that impacted the business performance of JPI Healthcare during his leadership period, annotating them with his own narratives about the internal reason and background behind his business decisions. Since primary self-study of a business leader is exceptionally rare, this study should be considered valuable. Additionally, Mr. Jin-Won Kim, a capable business leader himself, chose and described some important events related to three valuables that impact business performance: competency of executive, organizational culture and human capital, and effectiveness of market strategy based on Resource-based view theory. Therefore, this study will aid business leaders in SME(Small-Medium Enterprise) who are seeking appropriate solutions to overcome difficult business situations or strategies to develop their companies into strongly globalized SMEs. Furthermore, there are many practical implications available for future business leaders who are planning to succeed enterprises.

        Effects of Storage Buffer and Temperature on the Integrity of Human DNA

        In this study, we have examined the effects of the storage time and temperature on DNA quality and have also studied the effects of the hydration buffer in which DNA is dissolved. This study was performed using 160 human blood samples collected with informed consent from 2007 to 2008 in the hospital where this cohort study was performed. The DNA extracted was dissolved using distilled water (DW) or Tris-EDTA (TE) buffer, and stored in the deep freezer or refrigerator for up to 10 weeks at $-70^{\circ}C$, $-20^{\circ}C$, $4^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. DNA integrity was determined by the degree of smearing of DNA on the gel. After four weeks, all of the 20 DNA samples dissolved in DW and stored at $25^{\circ}C$ were entirely degraded. After 10 weeks, 6 of the 20 DNA samples dissolved in TE buffer and stored at $25^{\circ}C$ were fairly degraded, and 4 of the 20 DNA samples dissolved in DW and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ were fairly degraded. The 20 DNA samples dissolved in TE buffer and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ were stable for 10 weeks. DNA samples stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ and $-70^{\circ}C$ did not appear to degrade in either DW or TE buffer, even at the 10-week point. We suggest that TE buffer should use for DNA elution, in order to protect against degradation and to preserve DNA for a long period of time, and the samples should be stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ or $-70^{\circ}C$.

        Green and Blue Light Emitting InN/GaN Quantum Wells with Nanosize Structures Grown by Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition

        The structural and electrical properties of InN/GaN multiple quantum wells, which were grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and electroluminescence measurements. As the quantum well growth time was changed, the wavelength was varied from 451 to 531 nm. In the varied current conditions, the blue LED with the InN MQW structures did not have the wavelength shift. With this result, we can expect that the white LEDs with the InN MQW structures do not show the color temperature changes with the variations of applied currents.

      • Evaluation of 13-week repeated oral dose toxicity of <i>Areca catechu</i> in F344/N rats

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study investigated the potential toxicity of the Areca catechu water extract after 13-week repeated oral administration at 0, 166.7, 500, and 1500 mg/kg/day in rats. During the study period, clinical signs, mortality, body weight, food consumption, water consumption, urinalysis, estrous cycle, sperm count and motility, ophthalmoscopy, hematology, serum biochemistry, gross pathology, organ weights, and histopathology were examined. At 1500 mg/kg/day, both sexes exhibited an increase in the incidence of abnormal clinical signs, which included, decreased body weight gain and food consumption, and increased urine bilirubin, ketone bodies, specific gravity, and protein and kidney weight. An increase in liver weight and estrous cycle alterations was observed in females. Serum biochemical and histopathological investigations revealed an increase in the levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase, and the incidence of hepatic necrosis in females. At 500 mg/kg/day, an increase in the incidence of abnormal clinical signs including diarrhea and soiled perineal region, was observed in both sexes. No treatmentrelated effects were observed at 166.7 mg/kg/day. Under the present experimental conditions, the target organs were determined to be the liver, kidney, and female reproductive system in rats. The no-observedeffect level was considered to be 166.7 mg/kg/day in rats.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Subchronic toxicity of <I>Areca catechu</I> water extract was investigated in rats. </LI> <LI> The target organs of the extract were determined to be the liver, kidney, and female reproductive system. </LI> <LI> The no-observed-effect level of the extract was considered to be 166.7 mg/kg/day in rats. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Identification of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Markers in the Laccase Gene of Shiitake Mushrooms (Lentinula edodes)

        We identified single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in the laccase gene to establish a line-diagnostic system for shiitake mushrooms. A total of 89 fungal isolates representing four lines, including Korean registered, Korean wild type, Chinese, and Japanese lines, were analyzed. The results suggest that SNP markers in the laccase gene can be useful for line typing in shiitake mushrooms.
