Nursing Home Residents’ Level of Knowledge About Urinary Incontinence

İlkim Çıtak Karakaya,Semiha Yenişehir,Mehmet Gürhan Karakaya 대한노인병학회 2019 Annals of geriatric medicine and research Vol.23 No.1

Background: A common problem in nursing home residents, urinary incontinence (UI) can lead to hygiene and skin problems, sleep disturbance, and decreased quality of life. This study evaluated the level of knowledge regarding UI among nursing home residents in Muğla, Turkey. Methods: This study included 64 (19 females, 45 males) nursing home resi-dent volunteers. Their physical and sociodemographic characteristics; daily living activities (Barthel Index); and the presence, frequency, severity, and type of UI as well as its impact on daily living were evaluated (International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form) and history of treatment was queried. An Incontinence Quiz was used to as-sess the residents’ knowledge of incontinence. Results: The participants were living in nursing homes for 34.48±33.16 months. Their educational level was low and most were single. The mean Barthel Index score was 89.75±13.00. Twenty-five participants had UI (18.8% urge, 4.7% stress, 15.6% mixed/other type), and the mean International Consulta-tion on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form score was 8.08±4.24. Forty-four percent of the participants had no treatment and none had physiotherapy for incontinence. The mean Incontinence Quiz score was 4.88±1.96, indicating a low level of knowledge. The items with the highest ratio of incorrect responses (second and 14th) were related to the causes of incontinence and care seeking. Conclusion: These findings underscore the ne-cessity of increasing knowledge among nursing home residents about the reasons and health care options for UI. Further studies on appropriate strategies to improve UI knowl-edge in this population will be of great value.

MSCT: AN EFFICIENT DATA COLLECTION HEURISTIC FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS WITH LIMITED SENSOR MEMORY CAPACITY

( Murat Karakaya ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2015 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.9 No.9

Sensors used in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have mostly limited capacity which affects the performance of their applications. One of the data-gathering methods is to use mobile sinks to visit these sensors so that they can save their limited battery energies from forwarding data packages to static sinks. The main disadvantage of employing mobile sinks is the delay of data collection due to relative low speed of mobile sinks. Since sensors have very limited memory capacities, whenever a mobile sink is too late to visit a sensor, that sensor`s memory would be full, which is called a `memory overflow`, and thus, needs to be purged, which causes loss of collected data. In this work, a method is proposed to generate mobile sink tours, such that the number of overflows and the amount of lost data are minimized. Moreover, the proposed method does not need either the sensor locations or sensor memory status in advance. Hence, the overhead stemmed from the information exchange of these requirements are avoided. The proposed method is compared with a previously published heuristic. The simulation experiment results show the success of the proposed method over the rival heuristic with respect to the considered metrics under various parameters.

Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Essential Oils Obtained from Oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum) by Using Different Extraction Methods

        Sibel Karakaya,Sedef Nehir El,Nural Karagözlü,Serpil Şahin 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.6

In this study, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of essential oils obtained from oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum) were determined by using solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME), supercritical fluid extraction, and conventional hydrodistillation (CH) methods. The inhibitory effects on the 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical of essential oils obtained from oregano by using SFME and CH were similar. However, essential oil extracted by CH showed greater (2.69 μmol/μL of oil) Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) than oregano oils obtained by SFME (P < .05). The difference between percentage inhibition and TEAC values most probably is due to the fact that undiluted and diluted samples are used in the percentage inhibition assay and the TEAC assay, respectively. TEAC values of oregano essential oils obtained by SFME at different microwave power levels were found to be similar and ranged from 0.72 to 0.84 μmol/μL of oil. Essential oils obtained by CH and SFME at different microwave powers inhibited the survival of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium, and Escherichia coli O157:H7, whereas survival of Staphylococcus aureus was not influenced. In addition, oregano oil obtained by SFME at 40% power level did not show any inhibitory effect on E. coli O157:H7.

        Ozdemir, Halim,Karakaya, Sinan,Petik, Tugba The Honam Mathematical Society 2020 호남수학학술지 Vol.42 No.2

Let Q and R be the well-known matrices associated with Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, and k, m, and n be any integers. It is mainly established all solutions of the matrix equations c1Qn + c2Qm = Qk, c1Qn + c2Qm = RQk, and c1Qn + c2RQm = Qk with unknowns c1, c2 ∈ ℂ*. Moreover, using the obtained results, it is presented many identities, some of them are available in the literature, and the others are new, related to the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers.

Pyrocatechol Violet Modified Graphite Pencil Electrode for Flow Injection Amperometric Determination of Sulfide

Emir, Gamze,Karakaya, Serkan,Dilgin, Yusuf The Korean Electrochemical Society 2020 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.11 No.3

In this study, pyrocatechol violet (Pcv) is proposed for the first time as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxidation of sulfide and flow injection analysis (FIA) of sulfide. A graphite pencil electrode (GPE) was modified with Pcv via immersion of the GPE into 0.01 M Pcv solution for 15 min. Cyclic voltammograms (CVs) demonstrated that Pcv/GPE exhibits a good electrocatalytic performance due to shift in the potential from +400 at bare GPE to +70 mV at Pcv/GPE and obtaining an enhancement in the peak current compared with the bare GPE. A linear range between 0.25 and 250 μM sulfide with a detection limit of 0.07 μM was obtained from the recorded current-time curves in Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) of sulfide. Sulfide in water samples was also successfully determined using the proposed FI amperometric methods.

        Dual-Band Double-Cylindrical-Ring 3D Frequency Selective Surface

        Sultan Can,Emrullah Karakaya,Fulya Bagci,Asim Egemen Yilmaz,Baris Akaoglu 한국전자통신연구원 2017 ETRI Journal Vol.39 No.1

This study presents a dual-band 3D frequency selective surface that provides a large degree of freedom in frequency and bandwidth adjustability. The proposed structure is evaluated in terms of its structural parameters, and prototypes were fabricated. The radius of the copper rings and the height of the cylinders are considered, and are shown through full-wave electromagnetic simulations to have a significant effect on the frequency characteristics of the frequency selective surface. The measurement results of the fabricated samples are compared with the simulation results, and a satisfactory agreement was obtained.

NOTES ON GENERALIZED FIBONACCI NUMBERS AND MATRICES

        ( Halim Özdemir ),( Sinan Karakaya ),( Tuğba Petik ) 호남수학회 2022 호남수학학술지 Vol.44 No.4

In this study, some new relations between generalized Fibonacci numbers and matrices are given. The work is designed in three stages: Firstly, it is obtained a relation between generalized Fibonacci numbers and integer powers of the matrices X satisfying the relation X2 = pX +qI, and also, many results are derived from obtained relation. Then, it is established more general relation between generalized Fibonacci numbers and the square matrices X satisfying the condition X2 = VnX - (-q)nI. Finally, some applications and numerical examples related to the obtained results are given.

Changes in Total Phenols, Total Flavonoids, and Antioxidant Activities of Common Beans and Pinto Beans after Soaking, Cooking, and in vitro Digestion Process

        H. Gul Akillioglu,Sibel Karakaya 한국식품과학회 2010 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.19 No.3

Even though bean varieties are widely consumed all over the world, data related to how cooking methods and in vitro digestion affect bioactive compounds they contain and data related to bioavailability of polyphenols are limited. The aim of the present study was to investigate how some cooking methods and in vitro digestion influence antioxidant activity, total phenols (TP), and total flavonoids (TF) of widely consumed beans in Turkey. Soaking caused a significant decrease (25.61-38.63%) in the bioavailability of TP of dry common beans (CB). Soaking in cold water resulted in a significant decrease in TP bioavailability of dry pinto beans (PB). TF content was well retained in PB cooked without soaking but was not detected in CB after in vitro digestion. CB soaked in hot water and cooked with the addition of NaHCO3 showed the greatest inhibition effect on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical (p<0.05). In vitro digestion caused increase in the antioxidant activity of both CB and PB.
