Ethnopharmacological survey of medicinal plants in Jeju Island, Korea

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>This study aims to analyze and record orally transmitted knowledge of medicinal plants from the indigenous people living in Hallasan National Park of Korea.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Data was collected through the participatory rural appraisal method involving interviews, informal meetings, open and group discussions, and overt observations with semi-structured questionnaires.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>In this study, a total of 68 families, 141 genera, and 171 species of plants that showed 777 ways of usage were recorded. Looking into the distribution of the families, 14 species of Asteraceae occupied 11.1% of the total followed by 13 species of Rosaceae, 10 species of Rutaceae, and nine species of Apiaceae which occupied 5.0%, 7.1% and 3.0% of the whole, respectively. 32 kinds of plant-parts were used for 47 various medicinal purposes. Values for the informant consensus factor regarding the ailment categories were for birth related disorders (0.92), followed by respiratory system disorders (0.90), skin disease and disorders (0.89), genitourinary system disorders (0.87), physical pain (0.87), and other conditions. According to fidelity levels, 36 plant species resulted in fidelity levels of 100%.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Consequently, results of this study will legally utilize to provide preparatory measures against the Nagoya Protocol (2010) about benefit-sharing for traditional knowledge of genetic resources.</P>
Synthesis of new yellow synergists for inkjet applications

<P>Two new synergists are proposed for pigment dispersion in pigment ink. Benzoic acid was applied to Pigment Yellow 74 (PY-74) and Pigment Yellow 150 (PY-150) as a hydrophilic functional group to synthesize (E)-4-(((3-(2-(2-methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)hydrazono)-4-oxopent-1-en-2-yl)(2-methoxyphenyl)am-ino)methyl)benzoic acid (SY-41) and (E)-4-((2,4,6-trioxo-5-((2,4,6-trioxohexahydropyrimidin-5-yl)di- azenyl)tetrahy-dropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl)methyl)benzoic acid (SY-43). Whereas pigment showed extremely low solubility in water and organic solvents like DMSO, DMF and methanol, two synergists were found to have higher solubility than pigment. This result can be interpreted as reduction of particle aggregation by increased polarity. Two synergists applied to pigment ink are expected to improve dispersion property and storage stability of ink.</P>

In this study, a quantitative evaluation and analysis method was presented to reduce friction noise generated during vehicle turning. for this purpose, Numerical analysis of theoretical modeling performed using matlab, The relationship between friction noise and dynamic footprint for major factors was verified by experimental methods. The control factor was reviewed to verify the multiple regression model after the tire was manufactured. It will be used for research on accelerated friction noise of electric vehicles in the future.

<P>In this paper, a compact channel thermal noise model for short-channel MOSFETs is presented and applied to the radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) design. Based on the analysis of the relationship among different short-channel effects such as velocity saturation effect (VSE), channel-length modulation (CLM), and carrier heating effect (CHE), the compact model for the channel thermal noise was analytically derived as a simple form. In order to simulate MOSFET's noise characteristics in circuit simulators, an appropriate methodology is proposed. The used compact noise model is verified by comparing simulated results to the measured data at device and circuit level by using 65nm and 130nm CMOS technologies, respectively.</P>

본 연구에서는 모바일 이동성 악성코드에 대하여 감염 경로와 활동에 대하여 분석하고, 특히 서로 다른 운영체제에서의 감염과 활동의 가능성을 실제로 70개의 악성코드들을 수집하여 실험적으로 증명하였으며, 모바일 폰의 유용정보 유출 기법에 대하여 분석하였다. 또한 모바일 폰의 확산을 통한 악성코드의 확산 감염에 대한 방지책을 분석하였다.
Remodeling of Neuronal Circuits After Reach Training in Chronic Capsular Stroke

<P>Background. Subcortical capsular stroke has a poor prognosis, and it is not yet fully understood how and under what circumstances reach training contributes to motor recovery. Objective. This study was performed to investigate changes in neuronal circuits and motor recovery in a chronic capsular stroke model in the presence or absence of reach training. Method. We generated photothrombotic capsular lesions in 42 Sprague-Dawley rats and evaluated motor recovery with or without daily training in a single-pellet reaching task (SPRT). We used 2-deoxy-2-[18F]-fluoro-D-glucose-microPET (positron emission tomography) to assess remodeling of neuronal circuits. Results. SPRT training was selectively beneficial only for the group with incomplete capsular destruction (P < .05), suggesting the relevance of plasticity in the remaining capsular fibers for motor recovery. Groups that did not receive SPRT training showed no motor recovery at all. The microPET analysis demonstrated that motor recovery was correlated with a reduction in cortical diaschisis in ipsilesional motor and sensory cortices and in the contralesional sensory cortex (Pearson's correlation, P < .05). We also observed training-dependent subcortical activation in the contralesional red nucleus, the internal capsule, and the ventral hippocampus (P < .0025; false discovery rate q < 0.05). The groups without reach training did not show the same degree of reduction in diaschisis or activation of the red nucleus. Conclusions. Our results suggest that motor recovery and remodeling of neuronal circuits after capsular stroke depend on the magnitude of the capsular lesion and on the presence or absence of reach training. Task-specific training is strongly indicated only when there is incomplete destruction of the capsular fibers.</P>
Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside inhibits adipogenesis through the AMPK pathway

<P>Flaxseeds are used to treat metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, hyperlipidemia and obesity. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) is a main substance of lignan which belongs to the phytoestrogen family and exists abundantly in flaxseeds. In this study, SDG reduced the body weight and size of adipose tissue, and decreased protein expressions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) and CCAAT-enhancerbinding protein alpha (C/EBP alpha) in the high fat diet-fed-induced obese mice model. In the vitro study, we examined the anti-adipogenic effect of SDG during differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells into adipocytes. 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were differentiated and treated with various concentrations of SDG. Oil Red O staining was done to measure the quantity of lipid contents. As a result, SDG reduced lipid accumulation and decreased the expressions of adipogenic- related genes such as adipocyte fatty-acid-binding protein 2, adiponectin, and resistin. SDG also decreased the mRNA and protein levels of PPAR gamma and C/EBP alpha. Furthermore, phosphorylation levels of AMPactivated protein kinase a (AMPK a) and its upstream activator, liver kinase B1, were significantly increased by SDG in 3T3-L1 cells. These results suggest that SDG inhibits adipogenesis by activating AMPK alpha, suggesting it could be an attractive therapeutic candidate for the treatment of obesity.</P>

Most of plastic bumper beams are produced by GMT(Glass Mat reinforced Thermoplastics). However, impact energy absorption of GMT bumper beam is limited because glass fiber is oriented uni-direction. In order to improve the performance of bumper beam in terms of impact energy absorption, we used not only polypropylene but also impregnated glass fabric and long glass fiber. The hybrid process of press and injection molding is developed and resulted in reducing processing time of the bumper beam. To predict the impact performance of beam in the condition of KSR93, IIHS and RCAR, The commercial software, LS-DYNA v971 is applied and the experiments are carried out using real cart car impact test as well.
