• Aorta protein networks in marginal and acute zinc deficiency

        Beattie, John H.,Gordon, Margaret-Jane,Rucklidge, Garry J.,Reid, Martin D.,Duncan, Gary J.,Horgan, Graham W.,Cho, Young-Eun,Kwun, In-Sook WILEY-VCH Verlag 2008 Proteomics Vol.8 No.10

Human zinc deficiency is a global problem and may influence the development of cardiovascular disease. Our objective was to determine Zn deficiency affected pathways and protein interactions in rat aorta and their likely influence on stress-induced atherogenesis. In two separate studies, rats were given diets acutely (<1 mg Zn/kg) or marginally (6 mg Zn/kg) deficient in Zn. Both studies included Zn adequate controls (35 mg Zn/kg) and the acute deficiency study included a pair-fed group. After 6 wk, proteins from thoracic aorta were separated by 2-DE. Proteins affected by zinc deficiency were identified by principal component analysis. Multiple correlations of identified proteins indicated protein networks of related function. Proteins clusters decreased in zinc deficiency were related to fatty acid and carbohydrate metabolism. Structurally related proteins, including zyxin and over nine transgelin 1 proteins, were either increased or decreased by acute and marginal deficiencies. PKCα was significantly decreased in Zn deficiency suggesting that Zn may regulate the phosphorylation of target proteins. Zn deficiency-related changes in structural, carbohydrate and fatty acid-related proteins may be disadvantageous for maintaining vascular health and are consistent with a protective role for zinc in the development of atherosclerosis.

PMR in Organic Plastic Crystals (I). Pivalic Acid

        최종권,잔 그레함,Stefan J. K. Choi,John D. Graham Korean Chemical Society 1975 대한화학회지 Vol.19 No.3

Pivalic acid, which has a globular shape and is a plastic crystal, has been examined by means of temperature-dependent with-line proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results of temperature-dependent line width, second moment, and spin-lattice relaxation time studies of pivalic acid were interpreted in terms of dynamic behavior and hydrogen bonding. The dynamic behavior consists of superimposed reorientation of the methyl groups about their three-fold axes$(C_3) and of the molecule about the central C-C bond(C_3'),$ general molecular reorientation about the center of gravity, and molecular self-diffusion. Activation energies for the motional processes have been obtained from line width measurements using the modified Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound theory and from spin-lattice relaxation time measurements. The results were compared with the Pople-Karasz theory of fusion and the agreement was found to be poor. The discrepancy was interpreted in terms of hydrogen bonding in this molecule.

Winter Wheat Grain Yield Response to Fungicide Application is Influenced by Cultivar and Rainfall

        Emmanuel Byamukama,Shaukat Ali,Jonathan Kleinjan,Dalitso N,Yabwalo,Christopher Graham,Melanie Caffe-Treml,Nathan D,Mueller,John Rickertsen,William A,Berzonsky 한국식물병리학회 2019 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.35 No.1

Winter wheat is susceptible to several fungal pathogens throughout the growing season and foliar fungicide application is one of the strategies used in the management of fungal diseases in winter wheat. However, for fungicides to be profitable, weather conditions conducive to fungal disease development should be present. To determine if winter wheat yield response to fungicide application at the flowering growth stage (Feekes 10.5.1) was related to the growing season precipitation, grain yield from fungicide treated plots was compared to non-treated plots for 19 to 30 hard red winter wheat cultivars planted at 8 site years from 2011 through 2015. At all locations, Prothioconazole + Tebuconazole or Tebuconazole alone was applied at flowering timing for the fungicide treated plots. Grain yield response (difference between treated and non-treated) ranged from 66-696 kg/ha across years and locations. Grain yield response had a positive and significant linear relationship with cumulative rainfall in May through June for the mid and top grain yield ranked cultivars (R2=54%, 78%, respectively) indicating that a higher amount of accumulated rainfall in this period increased chances of getting a higher yield response from fungicide application. Cultivars treated with a fungicide had slightly higher protein content (up to 0.5%) compared to non-treated. These results indicate that application of fungicides when there is sufficient moisture in May and June may increase chances of profitability from fungicide application.
