Although melanin plays a biological role in the protection of underlying tissues from harmful ultraviolet radiations, yet large amounts of melanin in light-skinned individuals can make them susceptible to skin cancer. In this study, lysosome-related organelles extracts (LOE) from hen egg whites, HeLa cells, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been used to lower melanin color intensity. The results show 80% reduction in melanin upon daily treatment with 100 μg LOE for a period of 19 days. Additionally, the treatment with S. cerevisiae LOE showed the best melanin color reduction, which is consistent with the level of peroxidase activity. The treatment of LOE from S. cerevisiae with NH4Cl decreases melanin reduction activity and peroxidase activity compare to LOE from normal S. cerevisiae. Meanwhile, in contrast, the treatment with H2O2 showed a completely contrary pattern. The above results thus indicate that LOEs can be promising agents for use in cosmeceutical skin lightening as well as for the treatment of hyper pigmentation disorders.
Vol.37 No.2
The present study investigated the role of depressive tendency in the relationship between insecure adult attachment and suicidal vulnerability among young adults with suicidal ideation. Results from self-report questionnaires based on a sample of 278 young adults in the Seoul/Gyeonggi area with reported suicidal ideation were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that the effect of insecure adult attachment on suicidal vulnerability was partially mediated by depressive tendency. First, anxious attachment significantly increased the level of dependent depressive tendency, but the increase in dependent depressive tendency significantly decreased suicidal vulnerability. On the other hand, anxious attachment and avoidant attachment significantly increased the level of self-critical depressive tendency. In turn, the increase in self-critical depressive tendency significantly increased suicidal vulnerability. Differential findings regarding dependent depressive tendency and self-critical depressive tendency add to the extant literature on depressive tendency, insecure adult attachment, and suicidal risk. Implications of the present findings as well as suggestions for future study were discussed.

One of the most significant and integral issues for the field study is how far the learning activity through experience could motivate children to learn. The purpose of this study is to design and produce the digital contents based on form of storytelling and the digital contents are composed of 3 parts, which are before visiting the museum, the time when children"s audience visit the museum and after visiting the museum. This research is based on not only the interviews with the experts in the education of children but also the questionnaire survey analysis of children and their parents. The designed digital contents will be displayed on the transparent glasses of the museum in order to deliver the contents to children"s audience effectively. The digital contents will be able to give more opportunities children to want to visit many times and to explore what they see and investigate in the museum in depth.

<P><B><I>Background/Aims:</I></B> Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common primary brain tumor in adults. The defining characteristics of GBM are diffuse infiltration of tumor cells into normal brain parenchyma, rapid growth, a high degree of infiltration of microglia and macrophages, and the presence of necrosis. Microglia/macrophages are frequently found in gliomas and they extensively infiltrate GBM tissue, up to 30% of total tumor mass. However, little is known about the effect of necrotic cells (NCs) on microglia infiltration in GBM and the tumor-infiltrating microglia-induced factors in GBMs. <B><I>Methods:</I></B> In this study, to address whether necrosis or necrosis-exposed GBM cells affect the degree of microglia/macrophage infiltration, migration and invasion/infiltration assays were performed. Culture supernatants and nuclear extracts of CRT-MG cells treated or untreated with necrotic cells were analyzed using a chemokine array and electrophoretic mobility shift assay, respectively. <B><I>Results:</I></B> The presence of NCs promoted the migration/infiltration of microglia, and GBM cell line CRT-MG cells exposed to NCs further enhanced the migration and infiltration of HMO6 microglial cells. Treatment with NCs induced mRNA and protein expression of chemokines such as <unterline>M</unterline>onocyte <unterline>C</unterline>hemoattractant <unterline>P</unterline>rotein-1 (CCL2/MCP-1) and <unterline>M</unterline>acrophage <unterline>I</unterline>nflammatory <unterline>P</unterline>rotein-3α (CCL20/MIP-3α) in CRT-MG cells. In particular, CCL2/MCP-1 and CCL20/MIP-3α were significantly increased in NC-treated CRT-MG cells. NCs induced DNA binding of the transcription factors <unterline>N</unterline>uclear <unterline>F</unterline>actor (NF)-κB and <unterline>A</unterline>ctivator <unterline>P</unterline>rotein 1 (AP-1) to the CCL2/MCP-1 and CCL20/MIP-3α promoters, leading to increased CCL2/MCP-1 and CCL20/MIP-3α mRNA and protein expression in CRT-MG cells. <B><I>Conclusion:</I></B> These results provide evidence that NCs induce the expression of CCL2/MCP-1 and CCL20/MIP-3α in glioblastoma cells through activation of NF-κB and AP-1 and facilitate the infiltration of microglia into tumor tissues.</P>
