Currently domestic criteria for the aircraft noise is being adapted WECPNL(weighted equivalent continuous perceived noise level), while internationally preferred method is L_(dn) which is originated from L_(eq) and can evaluate even environmental noise. WECPNL used in domestic as a evaluation method is only for the aircraft noise. It is, therefore, not adequate for the evaluation of residents' injury, moreover, it is very difficult to measure the aircraft noise with WECPNL due to the complicated calculating procedures as long as automatic measuring system is not used This study aims to propose alternative evaluation method for the aircraft noise. To achieve this purpose, the data measured by automatic measuring system in 5 places among domestic airports from 1998 to 2002 were gathered and calculated with three evaluation method ; WECPNL, L_(eq) and L_(dn) and the results calculated from different methods were compared and analyzed. At the same time, it was investigated problems generated from the actual operating of the automatic measuring system and that remedy was presented.

<P>A Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc. cv. Miyagawa) spontaneous mutant, Shinheungri, produces fruit with an abnormal red-coloured peel during ripening. The peel and pulp extracts of Shinheungri fruit were evaluated for polyphenolic contents and antioxidant activities by using various in vitro assays. Compared with those of wild type (WT), Shinheungri exhibited slightly higher total flavonoid content and antioxidant activities. The results of UPLC analyses indicate that the peel and pulp extracts of Shinheungri fruit were rich in mainly hesperidin, and they had different flavonoid composition. The present data on Shinheungri revealed a potential source of powerful flavonoids for further detailed phytochemical investigation.</P>

<P><B>Introduction</B></P><P>Although approximately 25 common genetic susceptibility loci have been identified to be independently associated with breast cancer risk through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), the genetic risk variants reported to date only explain a small fraction of the heritability of breast cancer. Furthermore, GWAS-identified loci were primarily identified in women of European descent.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>To evaluate previously identified loci in Korean women and to identify additional novel breast cancer susceptibility variants, we conducted a three-stage GWAS that included 6,322 cases and 5,897 controls.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>In the validation study using Stage I of the 2,273 cases and 2,052 controls, seven GWAS-identified loci [5q11.2/<I>MAP3K1 </I>(rs889312 and rs16886165), 5p15.2/<I>ROPN1L </I>(rs1092913), 5q12/<I>MRPS30 </I>(rs7716600), 6q25.1/<I>ESR1 </I>(rs2046210 and rs3734802), 8q24.21 (rs1562430), 10q26.13/<I>FGFR2 </I>(rs10736303), and 16q12.1/<I>TOX3 </I>(rs4784227 and rs3803662)] were significantly associated with breast cancer risk in Korean women (<I>P</I><SUB>trend </SUB>< 0.05). To identify additional genetic risk variants, we selected the most promising 17 SNPs in Stage I and replicated these SNPs in 2,052 cases and 2,169 controls (Stage II). Four SNPs were further evaluated in 1,997 cases and 1,676 controls (Stage III). SNP rs13393577 at chromosome 2q34, located in the <I>Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 4 </I>(<I>ERBB4</I>) gene, showed a consistent association with breast cancer risk with combined odds ratios (95% CI) of 1.53 (1.37-1.70) (combined <I>P </I>for trend = 8.8 × 10<SUP>-14</SUP>).</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>This study shows that seven breast cancer susceptibility loci, which were previously identified in European and/or Chinese populations, could be directly replicated in Korean women. Furthermore, this study provides strong evidence implicating rs13393577 at 2q34 as a new risk variant for breast cancer.</P>

A Gram-stain-positive, obligately anaerobic, non-motile, nonspore- forming, and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated KGMB01110T, was isolated from a faecal sample of a healthy male in South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene showed that strain KGMB01110T belonged to Clostridium cluster XIVa and was most closely related to Mediterraneibacter glycyrrhizinilyticus KCTC 5760T (95.9% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The DNA G + C content of strain KGMB01110T based on its whole genome sequence was 44.1 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids (> 10%) of the isolate were C14:0 and C16:0. The strain KGMB01110T was positive for arginine dihydrolase, β-galactosidase-6-phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase. The strain KGMB01110T also produced acid from D-glucose and D-rhamnose, and hydrolyzed gelatin and aesculin. Furthermore, HPLC analysis and UV-tests of culture supernatant revealed that the strain KGMB01110T produced butyrate as the major end product of glucose fermentation. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics, strain KGMB01110T represent a novel species of the genus Mediterraneibacter in the family Lachnospiraceae. The type strain is KGMB01110T (= KCTC 15684T = CCUG 72830T).
Autophagy Regulates Formation of Primary Cilia in Mefloquine-Treated Cells

Primary cilia have critical roles in coordinating multiple cellular signaling pathways. Dysregulation of primary cilia is implicated in various ciliopathies. To identify specific regulators of autophagy, we screened chemical libraries and identified mefl oquine, an anti-malaria medicine, as a potent regulator of primary cilia in human retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells. Not only ciliated cells but also primary cilium length was increased in mefloquine-treated RPE cells. Treatment with mefloquine strongly induced the elongation of primary cilia by blocking disassembly of primary cilium. In addition, we found that autophagy was increased in mefloquine-treated cells by enhancing autophagic fl ux. Both chemical and genetic inhibition of autophagy suppressed ciliogenesis in mefloquine-treated RPE cells. Taken together, these results suggest that autophagy induced by mefloquine positively regulates the elongation of primary cilia in RPE cells.

Beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua is difficult to control using chemical insecticides because of the development of insecticide resistance. Various control agents may use for eco-friendly beet armyworm managements, Entomopathogenic fungus is one of the promising control agents as an alternative to chemical control agent. At previous study we isolated a number of entomopathogenic fungi from soil samples and selected three entomopathogenic fungi, Metarhizium anisopliae FT83, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus FG340 and Metarhizium anisopliae FG344 which had high virulence against larva of beet armyworm. To select an isolate having high virulence at high temperature against S. exigua, thermophilic pest, we conducted bioassay at five different temperatures(15, 20, 25, 30, 35℃). These three isolates showed the high mortality and low LT50 at 30℃. To select substrate for mass production these isolates were inoculated(5×10⁴/㎖, 20㎖) at barley, unpolished rice, wheat bran and rice bran and incubated for 14 days at 25℃. Wheat bran showed highest conidia production of M. anisopliae FT83 and P. funosoroseus FG340 and barley was suitable for M. anisopliae FG344.

Optical parameters of boron-doped ZnO nanorods grown by low-temperature hydrothermal reaction.

<P>Sol-gel spin-coating was used to deposit ZnO seed layers onto quartz substrates, and ZnO nanorods doped with various concentrations of B (i.e., BZO nanorods) ranging from 0 to 2.0 at% were hydrothermally grown on the ZnO seed layers. The effects of B doping on the absorption coefficient, optical band gap, Urbach energy, refractive index, extinction coefficient, single-oscillator energy, dispersion energy, average oscillator strength, average oscillator wavelength, dielectric constant, and optical conductivity of the hydrothermally grown BZO nanorods were investigated. The optical band gaps were 3.255, 3.243, 3.254, 3.258, and 3.228 eV for the nanorods grwon at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 at% B, respectively. B doping increased the Urbach energy from 40.7 to 65.1 meV for the nanorods grown at 0 and 2.0 at% B, respectively, and significantly affected the dispersion energy, the single-oscillator energy, the average oscillator wavelength, the average oscillator strength, the refractive index, and the optical conductivity of the hydrothermally grown BZO nanorods.</P>

We conducted bioassays with entomopathogenic fungi to select high virulence isolate to larva of beet armyworm. The bioassay was used 150 entomopathogenic fungal isolates which were isolated from soil samples of nine provinces by insect-bait method using Galleria mellonella and Tenebrio molitor. . Three isolates, Metarhizium spp. FT83, FT89 and FT90 had high virulence as 84.6%, 100% and 100%, respectively, against S. exigua. The medial lethal time(LT50) of conidia of three isolates was 5.01, 2.99 and 2.92days respectively.
Optimization of Pasteurization Process of Beer for Avoiding Off-Flavor

The pasteurization is employed for extending shelf-life and keeping the quality of products constant. However the pasteurization undesirably accelerates the oxidation of beer which renders volatile compounds concerning off-flavor. The pasteurization conditions was optimized to avoid off-flavor of beer during pasteurization. Under the isothermal condition, thermal destruction kinetics such as D and Z value of Lactobacillus brevis which is reported the most common beer spoilage, was determined. The binomial data (detected or non-detected of off-flavor) was treated with logistic regression to estimate off-flavor development (OFD) times. The temperature dependence of OFD times was established in terms of Arrhenius relationships. Optimized pasteurization temperature and time were found at which OFD times was not detected. The constraint for optimization was that the pasteurization degree should be larger than 5 decimal reduction time. The optimization was conducted through mathematical simulation using kinetics and temperature-dependent models for microbial death and OFD times. The optimized results were validated by the corresponding experimentations, which met the requirements that the concentration of Lactobacillus brevis was 5-Log reduction and the OFD times not detected.
