        Investigating Directives in Korean: Advice and Suggestion

        Investigating Directives in Korean: Advice and Suggestion Jee-Won Hahn (Kyung-Hee University) Even though it is based on a small number of responses, this study provides some interesting findings and implications for two directive speech acts. Advice and suggestion are examined from three aspects: conceptual, situational, and linguistic. These speech acts are shown to present similarities and differences as well. From a conceptual aspect, a set of semantic features are identified to distinguish advice and suggestion. The situational dimension offers the insight into the speech act theory (Searle and Venderveken 1985) to understand the condition for determining directive speech acts. Finally, linguistic realizations present various strategies employed for performing an act. Compared to advice, due to weakening illocutionary force, suggestion tends to be simplified in types of linguistic strategies. In addition, this study argues that a sentence-based approach needs to be complemented by a variety of pragmatic devices when it comes to the English-learning environment.

        The Effect of Instruction on Pragmatic Competence

        The Effect of Instruction on L2 Pragmatic Competence. Research on pragmatic competence has increased with respect to L2 developmental studies (Rose 2005; Uso-Juan and Martinez 2008). Korean is one of the languages explored in interlanguage pragmatics and cross-cultural pragmatics (Byon 2006). However, despite growing interest in L2 pragmatics, little research has been conducted on the effect of pragmatic instruction on Korean learners. This study examined how instruction affects the development of pragmatic competence in Korean EFL context. Pretests and posttests were conducted by means of a discourse completion task. Results of the study indicated students who received the instruction increased their pragmatic ability supporting previous findings. For implication, the use of mitigation devices need to gain attention since different types of linguistic politeness were preferred by language learners.

        LEARNING SPEECH ACTS AND POLITENESS STRATEGIES THROUGH EFL TEXTBOOKS IN KOREA

        Abstract English-teaching textbooks become the source of the data for this study. The concern of this study is to identify pragmatic features favored in classroom activities with heavy reliance on textbooks. Then, politeness is investigated for the purpose of understanding characteristics in non-authentic English. A total eight speech acts are identified as recurring across different kinds of textbooks including responses, questions, advice, and suggestions. Among others, the act of responding is notably common, which is also significant from a theoretical point of view. Responding belongs to positive politeness in that it serve as keeping conversation going on to satisfy the addressee"s connection and solidarity (Arundale 2009). It is possible to note that emphasis on interaction with the hearer is motivated in the textbook context. For pedagogy, language instructors should consider American communication style to maintain verbal interaction in teaching common speech behavior in classroom.

        Korean Interpretations of Western Business Meetings: The Language of Cultural Differences

        As language education focuses on a variety of units associated with interaction as well as linguistics, it now covers a wide range of skills from grammatical and linguistic to interactional and social competence. This is reflected in the diverse situations and compartment specified in English-teaching activities. This study focuses on business meetings to examine and evaluate how Korean students perceive Western style business meetings. To understand the learner’s perception of business meetings, this study employs an analytical framework (Hymes 1974) to take into consideration components accompanied in speech activities. In terms of methodology,questionnaires are drawn up to involve components of business meetings based on Hymes’ speaking model. In this study, eleven components are investigated such as settings, ends, act sequences,and key. In many instances, social hierarchy is present in Koreans’consciousness with regards to business communication indicating they are influenced by different cultural values. This study has implications for teaching business communication in English to show cultural interpretation of Western style meetings. Findings of the study provide social and cultural features associated with speaking in the business context. It seems necessary for language instructors to help learners they must be aware of differences between cultures and how that would affect how it is being taught or learned. In addition these features are always changing and that must also be taken into consideration.

        Perception of (im)politeness in Korean apology

        The purpose of the study was to identify factors that affect the perception of politeness in the act of apologizing. A perception task has been employed for Korean apologies. The potential apologies are presented to native speakers of Korean in order to see how such utterances are perceived by native speakers. Responses to apology events are analyzed in two ways: quantitatively and qualitatively. The choice of apologies over non-apologies is calculated for their perception of politeness. This study analyzed three aspects: apology strategies, use of performatives, and situational variables. The stimuli used for the perception task were selected based on data from a previous study. A total of ten items were used in order to elicit responses from Korean native speakers. The degree of politeness was calculated based on how the given apology item had been interpreted. If the items were perceived to be sincere and appropriate for the context, participants were likely to choose apologies over non-apologies and vice versa. Such choices are presented in percentages for politeness. This study demonstrates the role of linguistic strategies and performatives in apologies. The choice of linguistic strategies is found to affect the degree of politeness that people perceive. Among others, different strategies are classified as other-oriented politeness. Furthermore, the degree of politeness also varies according to the presence of performatives. Additional findings come from metalinguistic views on apologetic utterances. .Native interpretations of apologetic utterances provide comments that reflect views on situational variation.

        Impoliteness phenomena in Korean applied to translation of English conflict talk

        Studies on impoliteness recently began to receive attention from academics. This study investigates how impoliteness behavior is manifested in Korean by looking at translation. The study examines linguistic choices that translators make to create conflict talk. The scene as impoliteness phenomena was selected from the movie Chef (2014) which is composed of an argument between characters. For analysis, a set of impoliteness formula in Culpeper (2005) were employed since the framework provides a useful cross-cultural application. According to the results, verbal arguments in Korean is realized by personalized insults, unpalatable questions, and codeswitching. Korean honorifics serve to generate impoliteness with respect to the choice of speech styles and their social factors. Particularly, sarcasm is found to be one of the major forms in attacking the other’s face. Sarcastic meaning was elicited by a new category like adverse statements as well as use of honorifics supporting previous findings. Language specific features contribute to develop some theoretical perspectives in relation with insults and some grammatical realizations.

        Function of Apologies in Korean

        Chapter Six analyzed the use of apologies occurring in the context of other speech events such as greetings, expressions of gratitude, requests, and rejections. Theoretical motivations within politeness theory (Brown and Levinson 1987) accounted for the use of apologies occurring in the contexts of other speech events. For requests and refusals which are characterized as face-threatening acts in politeness theory, apologies may be used to reduce expected face-threats to the hearer. Apologies may occur at the beginning of a conversation either as a way of greeting someone or of opening a conversation, in both cases, as a polite gesture to ``break the ice`` between two parties when they have not seen each other for a while. In addition, apologies also occur in situations where something good for the speaker has been offered. (Kyung Hee University)

        A Cross-cultural Study of Responses to Offensive Situations

        Although Korean and English speech act studies have increased in quantity, a closer look revealed some limitations from qualitative perspectives. Many speech act studies employed similar data collection that draw on similar coding systems and investigated speech acts between Koreans as non-native speakers and native speakers of English. For this reason, similar findings were consistently reported from the literature. This study examines two data sets collected from Koreans and Americans as native speakers. The study also examines diverse responses occurring in six different scenarios and considers cultural-social factors in the linguistic realization of apology. Results indicate cross-cultural differences are found in the use of non-apologies and non-verbal behavior which are missing from the previous studies. Secondly, contextual factors like social relationships and offense types are likely to affect the choice of language between Korean and English speech apologies. The study concludes a substantial comparison needs to expand kinds of speech acts in order to understand intercultural communication.
