The purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm for optimizing area calculations for remodeled apartments taking into consideration the extended floor area of existing units, total floor area of added units, vertical and/or horizontal extension, number of floors, etc. within the legal regulations for apartment remodeling. The developed algorithm was composed of an objective function to maximize extended unit area and 7 constraints related to remodeling by vertical extension as defined by current regulations. The algorithm was applied to a planned apartment remodeling proposal in order to verify its applicability and effectiveness. Overall, applying the algorithm to the project displayed similar results with the actual proposal, but for some variables showed more efficient results. This algorithm could facilitate effective decision-making for optimizing area distribution in old residential complexes which have multiple unit types and varying building conditions, as well as increase the satisfaction of residents and the business value of remodeling.

The need for big data extraction and analysis in the field of architecture is heightening high with the development of information-oriented society. It is because non-computer, human-eye analysis reached its limit in aggregation and understanding of data upon the accumulation of various architectural data, such as Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE), usage patterns, behavioral patterns, environment, and performance evaluation. In order to make an analysis of such data, it is effective to employ SOM (Self-Organizing Map) analysis, a clustering method by unsupervised learning that allows the overall comprehension, visualization, and interpretation of a multi-dimensional dataset. This research is a part of a research that applies data-mining method to architecture-related fields. Its purpose is to connect architectural information including the level of satisfaction to the properties of residents and aggregate and visualize them. Research subjects were 63 households in Vietnamese residence. It conducted the dating of extracted factors through post-occupancy evaluation and plans, and performed a SOM analysis on: 1. Preference and level of satisfaction on block and unit plan; 2. Environmental properties of current residence; and 3. Usage patterns of residents. As a result, this research was able to classify the residents into three groups by their resident properties and derive suggestions for improvement in architectural planning, based on differences among the groups.

Though apartments are often criticized for their homogeneous nature, they are being actively adopted as an efficient method of providing houses for developing countries. In this paper, the authors argue whether such phenomenon can be seen simply as cultural identity giving in to internationalism. That is, apartments can indeed reflect locality within their spatial structure. To support this argument, apartment units from Korea, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan, three countries from dramatically different climate zones and cultural backgrounds, are analyzed. In doing so, Space Syntax, a quantitative analysis method widely used to interpret the cultural aspects embedded into a spatial structure is utilized. Each country's apartment units had different functions at the topological center, which should not be seen as a mere coincidence since they were consistent with the spatial characteristic found in their respective traditional houses. Therefore, it can be said that apartments, in their unit plans, do reflect locality, a direct contradiction to the general belief.

Wandering As a Goal-Seeking Behavior: Examining Wanderers' Negotiation With the Physical Environment
Choi, Jaepil 대한건축학회 1999 Architectural research Vol.1 No.1
Wandering behavior is a serious problem among the elderly in nursing homes, yet it has received relatively little study by those interested in gerontology. The research that has been done has generally regarded wandering behavior as an aimless, directionless movement. Only a few studies have addressed the problem after first assuming that wanderers have a goal to their movement, and fewer still have explored the role of the physical environment on the wanderer's behavior. None have combined the two approaches. In this paper, the physical environment will be looked at for support of the theory of wandering as a goal seeking behavior. In a pilot study using behavior maps, the movements of wanderers and non-wanderers are analyzed and compared for the amount of visual access and exposure their locations contain. While the behavioral implications of these two measurements are considered, the limitations of the results are also discussed, so that their relationship to the cause of wandering behavior may be better understood. By implying that wandering is not a totally aimless but purposeful behavior at least in the subconscious level, constructive design implications can be suggested that would make wandering a more pleasant experience for the wanderer and increase the ease of the nursing home staffs management of the problem.

The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology to track the behavior of pedestrians in railway station passenger facilities by utilizing video clips. In order to provide comfortable and user-centered passenger facilities, an understanding of the current behavior of passengers should be prioritized through pedestrian tracking surveys. However, because railway stations become congested in a short amount of time, direct observation in situ with a limited number of researchers is difficult. Thus, utilizing video equipments was developed as a methodology for tracking the behavior of pedestrians in railway passenger facilities. This study developed a method for collecting pedestrian behavior data by utilizing video equipments and tracking pedestrian circulation. The pedestrian tracking survey was conducted using this method and applied in an actual railway station. The derived results identify the use patterns and changes in the railway station and reveal the differences with the current standard.

The current design guideline of railway station proposes LOS of each facility for planning passenger facilities in a railway station. And it is applied Fruin’s LOS theory to area calculation formula in planning capacity and size. But plan a passenger facilities based on LOS limited to pedestrian and waiting space. This study proposes a quantitative evaluation index for evaluating LOS for a railway station passenger facility in a multi-faced way. It classifies various detailed facilities required passenger services, and it derives the evaluation index from analyzing the factors that may affect the passenger’s convenience level in various facilities within a railway station.
