Background: Satisfactory completion of mine safety training is a prerequisite for being hired and for continued employment in the coal industry. Although training includes content to develop skills in a variety of mineworker competencies, research and recommendations continue to specify that specific limitations in the self-escape portion of training still exist and that mineworkers need to be better prepared to respond to emergencies that could occur in their mine. Ecological models are often used to inform the development of health promotion programs but have not been widely applied to occupational health and safety training programs. Methods: Nine mine safety trainers participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews. A theoretical analysis of the interviews was completed via an ecological lens. Each level of the social ecological model was used to examine factors that could be addressed both during and after mine safety training. Results: The analysis suggests that problems surrounding communication and collaboration, leadership development, and responsibility and accountability at different levels within the mining industry contribute to deficiencies in mineworkers' mastery and maintenance of skills. Conclusion: This study offers a new technique to identify limitations in safety training systems and processes. The analysis suggests that training should be developed and disseminated with consideration of various levels-individual, interpersonal, organizational, and community-to promote skills. If factors identified within and between levels are addressed, it may be easier to sustain mineworker competencies that are established during safety training.
NMR and electronic inhomogeneity in cuprate superconductors

interpretation of experiments and for theory. NMR is a very versatile method and we show that the NMR data clearly reveal that allcuprates, although to a very dierent extent, show inhomogeneity in the static charge and spin density. While part of the evidence makesthis inhomogeneity appear to be a variation of local doping, other NMR experiments show that the length-scales involved must be on theorder of a few CuCu distances. Estimates of the extent of these variations in dierent materials are given.

Intravenous delivery of a multi-mechanistic cancer-targeted oncolytic poxvirus in humans

The efficacy and safety of biological molecules in cancer therapy, such as peptides and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), could be markedly increased if high concentrations could be achieved and amplified selectively in tumour tissues versus normal tissues after intravenous administration. This has not been achievable so far in humans. We hypothesized that a poxvirus, which evolved for blood-borne systemic spread in mammals, could be engineered for cancer-selective replication and used as a vehicle for the intravenous delivery and expression of transgenes in tumours. JX-594 is an oncolytic poxvirus engineered for replication, transgene expression and amplification in cancer cells harbouring activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)/Ras pathway, followed by cell lysis and anticancer immunity. Here we show in a clinical trial that JX-594 selectively infects, replicates and expresses transgene products in cancer tissue after intravenous infusion, in a dose-related fashion. Normal tissues were not affected clinically. This platform technology opens up the possibility of multifunctional products that selectively express high concentrations of several complementary therapeutic and imaging molecules in metastatic solid tumours in humans.
A Scheme for Location-Based Internet Broadcasting and Its Applications
Jongtaek Oh,Haas, Z.J. IEEE 2007 IEEE communications magazine Vol.45 No.11

In this article, a new Internet broadcasting scheme that combines the existing network-wide unicast protocol and a subnet-wide broadcast protocol is proposed. The proposed broadcasting scheme is appropriate for location-based push services and requires only a minor functional addition to the existing edge routers, base stations, or access points. To eliminate unnecessary broadcasting traffic, an efficient terminal-originated triggering algorithm for broadcast initiation is introduced. The scheme provides location-based information to mobile users without the need for protocol reconfigurations or prior knowledge of a user's location. We also discuss some potential applications of the scheme. Performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated and selected results are presented in this article. The evaluation shows that the broadcasting scheme significantly reduces the network traffic and the server load.

Bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsions (Bijels) are novel soft materials with potential applications in areas ranging from healthcare, cosmetics, and food to energy and diverse chemical technologies. However, their fabrication is currently limited to only two pairs of immiscible liquids with narrow temperature windows for their formation. In such systems, typical bicontinuous domain sizes are in the range of tens of micrometers, and fabrication is inefficient due to its batch-wise nature and expensive starting materials. We explore the formation of bijels by mass transfer induced ternary liquid-liquid phase separation. The use of commercially available silica nanoparticles and ionic surfactants allows us to continuously form bijel fibers and membranes with controllable morphologies and domain sizes down to only a few hundreds of nanometers. We study the dependence of fiber morphology on different control parameters such as particle and surfactant concentration. The hierarchical morphology of STRIPS bijels open avenues to new applications such as interfacial catalysis.

Although enzymes are efficient catalysts capable of converting various substrates into desired products with high specificity under mild conditions, their effectiveness as catalysts is substantially reduced when substrates are poorly water-soluble. In this study, to expedite the enzymatic conversion of a hydrophobic substrate, we use a bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gel which provides large interfacial area between two immiscible liquids: oil and water. Using lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of tributyrin as a model reaction, we show that the interfacial area of bijel is a crucial factor that enhances the efficiency of the enzymatic reaction. The bijel system gives a four-fold increase in the initial reaction rate in comparison to that of the conventional biphasic system. Our results demonstrate that bijels are powerful biphasic reaction media to accelerate enzymatic reactions with various hydrophobic reagents.
