<P>New saponin components, Sg-6 saponins, have been recently reported from the seeds of wild soybean (Glycine soja) which may have specific health benefits. To evaluate the possible health benefits, a large amount of Sg-6 saponins are needed, but general group A acetyl saponins and new Sg-6 saponins are eluted in overlapping peaks by ordinal preparative high-performance liquid chromatography and/or open column methods. A new method is proposed in this report. This method includes (1) deacetylation of group A acetyl saponins in alkali condition with KOH, (2) precipitation of Sg-6 saponins in acid condition with HCl, (3) recovery of Sg-6 saponins with aqueous methanol from the precipitate, and (4) elution of Sg-6 saponins by preparative reverse-phase open column. With this method, from 450g of wild soybean whole seed powder, about 1g of Sg-6 saponins (mixture of six components) was clearly separated from other saponins with 61% recovery. [GRAPHICS] .</P>

Methods for the measurement of copper(II) complexing capacity (CuCC) of natural waters by using the back-extraction of bis(benzoyl-trifluoroacetonate)copper(II) and the extraction rate of dithizonato-copper(II) complex were described. Experimental results show that the CuCC of the Kiryu river water samples from urban area were consistently larger than those from up-stream, due to a ligand which originated from human activities.

Background: To evaluate use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a logistic model including risk factors for lymph node metastasis for improved diagnosis. Materials and Methods: The subjects were 176 patients with rectal cancer who underwent preoperative MRI. The longest lymph node diameter was measured and a cut-off value for positive lymph node metastasis was established based on a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. A logistic model was constructed based on MRI findings and risk factors for lymph node metastasis extracted from logistic-regression analysis. The diagnostic capabilities of MRI alone and those of the logistic model were compared using the area under the curve (AUC) of the ROC curve. Results: The cut-off value was a diameter of 5.47 mm. Diagnosis using MRI had an accuracy of 65.9%, sensitivity 73.5%, specificity 61.3%, positive predictive value (PPV) 62.9%, and negative predictive value (NPV) 72.2% [AUC: 0.6739 (95%CI: 0.6016-0.7388)]. Age (<59) (p=0.0163), pT (T3+T4) (p=0.0001), and BMI (<23.5) (p=0.0003) were extracted as independent risk factors for lymph node metastasis. Diagnosis using MRI with the logistic model had an accuracy of 75.0%, sensitivity 72.3%, specificity 77.4%, PPV 74.1%, and NPV 75.8% [AUC: 0.7853 (95%CI: 0.7098-0.8454)], showing a significantly improved diagnostic capacity using the logistic model (p=0.0002). Conclusions: A logistic model including risk factors for lymph node metastasis can improve the accuracy of MRI diagnosis of rectal cancer.

Analysis of abrupt destroyed of passive oxide films on Al - Zn alloy layer coated on steel and its repairis important to understand the localized corrosion of steels. In the present investigation, anodic oxide films formed on Al - Zn coated steel specimens were removed by photon rupture method (one pulse of focused pulsed Nd - YAG laser beam irradiation) at a constant potential in sodium borate solutions, pH = 9.2, with / without chloride ions to monitor the current transient. Irradiation with a pulsed laser in solutions causes abrupt removal of the anodic oxide film on the specimen at the laser-irradiated area. Without chloride ions, oxide films were reformed in the sodium borate solution at - 0.5 to 1 V after removal of the anodic oxide film. However, in chloride ions containing solutions, pitting corrosion of Zn - 55 mass % Al coated layers occurs at high potentials, while film reformation occurs at low potentials. It was also found that chloride ions enhance dissolution of aluminum and zinc at the very initial period after laser irradiation.

The present paper describes a mashup and an approach by which to integrate a sensor network using a messaging network. A messaging network is an overlay network that has a rich set of message handling capabilities. The use of a messaging network enables the complexity and maintenance burden of the integrated sensor information systems to be reduced. Mashup refers to the use of different data or services for the purpose of providing value-added information or efficient use of information. The proposed approach generates an SOA-based sensor network design and mashup.
