Functioning of self-help groups in India: Members’ perceptions of key issues
Huma,Abid Hasan 한국사회복지학회 2017 Asian Social Work and Policy Review Vol.11 No.2
Self-help group-bank linkage program is considered a powerful tool for eradicating poverty in many poor and developing countries, especially in Asia. The number of these groups has increased rapidly during the last few years; however, their efficacy to achieve long-term poverty alleviation has been questioned by many researchers. Previous studies have focused mainly on objective indicators to understand the program’s impact on the lives of its members, such as changes in the economic condition and the development of conceptual frameworks. The present study primarily focuses on member perceptions of the overall functioning of the self-help group. A questionnaire survey was administered to 15 presidents and 75 group members belonging to 15 self-help groups with active bank accounts in Chandigarh, a union territory of India. Drawing on their responses and perceptions, the five major problems faced by these groups were identified as: (i) ineffective group meetings, (ii) absence of income-generating activities, (iii) lack of cooperation among members, (iv) lack of awareness, and (v) minimal savings. Our key recommendations include: (i) increased organizational support, (ii) focus on skill development, (iii) training and motivation, (iv) effective leadership, and (v) regular meetings.

Background and objective: Cervicitis are an inflammatory condition of the cervix. This may be acute, chronic, active & specific or non-specific, which may cause various sign & symptoms. Abnormal vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain, lower backache, post coital bleeding. If not treated timely it causes various complications viz PID, infertility, endometritis, ectopic pregnancy etc. Hence it has been decided to conduct a clinical trial for its management. Method: This study was an open observational study. The entire patients were allocated by considering the criteria of inclusion & exclusion. Marhame dakhilyun with roghane sausan is given 10 mg as ḥamūl at bed time, after menses for 21 days. All the patients were assessed by primary outcome of abnormal vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain, lower backache, post coital bleeding & secondary outcomes of vaginal symptoms scale score (VSS) which score the vaginal discharge with QOL in cervicitis patients and vaginal analogue scale (VAS) for pain. Result: In this present study, marked improvement is observed in cervicitis. The mean ± SD of vaginal discharge before & after treatment is 2.57±0.050, 0.33±0.48 respectively which is highly significant with p value of<0.0001**. VSS score before & after treatment is 21.27±6.12, 7.47±2.48 respectively with p<0.0001** which is highly significant. VAS score used for LAB & LPA before & after treatment is 6.63±1.09, 1.90±1.29 respectively with p<0.0001** which is highly significant. Interpretation & Conclusion: The study revealed that the formulation has been found effective in healing congestion, hypertrophied of the cervix and discharge and relieving the others associated symptoms of cervicitis. It is useful and provided immediate and effective treatment for cervicitis. Hence, the trial drug can be recommended for its management.

For women specifically, ageing has added problems of institutionalized gender hierarchies deeply ingrained in their cultures. This paper related issues of ageing in India to a feminist discourse on gender inequality and hierarchies and social norms rooted in patriarchy. The conclusion to this analysis is that serious and urgent efforts have to be made to address issues of gender imbalance in society and to better understand the problems of an ageing population which is now leading to a feminization of ageing.

The present study was caried out to examine the mechanisms of the synergistic interaction of PAF and A23187 mediated platelet aggregation. We found that platelet aggregation mediated by subthreshold concentrations of PAF (5 nM) and A23187 (1 M) was inhibited by PAF receptor blocker (WEB 2086, IC50 = 0 . 6 5 M) and calcium chanel blockers, diltiazem (IC50 = 1 3 M) and verapamil (IC50 = 1 8 M). Pretreatment of plate-lets with PAF and A23187 induced rise in in-blocked by verapamil. While examing the role of the down stream signaling pathways, we found that platelet aggregation induced by the co-adition of PAF and A23187 was also inhi-bited by low concentrations of phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor (U7312; IC50 = 10 M), a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor (indomethacin; IC50 = 0 . 2 M) and inhibitor of TLCK, herbimycin A with IC50 value of 5 M. The efect was also inhibited by a specific TXA2 receptor antagonist, SQ 29548 with very low IC50 value of 0.05 M. However, the inhibitors of MAP kinase, PD98059 and pro-tein kinase C, chelerythrine had no effect on PAF and A23187-induced platelet aggregation. These data sugest that the synergism between PAF and A23187 in platelet aggregation involves activa-tion of thromboxane and tyrosine kinase pathways.

To explore bacterial diversity for elucidating genetic variability in acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) lactonase structure, we screened 800 bacterial strains. It revealed the presence of a quorum quenching (QQ) AHL-lactonase gene (aiiA) in 42 strains. These 42 strains were identified using rrs (16S rDNA) sequencing as Bacillus strains, predominantly B. cereus. An in silico restriction endonuclease (RE) digestion of 22 AHL lactonase gene (aiiA) sequences (from NCBI database) belonging to 9 different genera, along with 42 aiiA gene sequences from different Bacillus spp. (isolated here) with 14 type II REs, revealed distinct patterns of fragments (nucleotide length and order) with four REs; AluI, DpnII, RsaI, and Tru9I. Our study reflects on the biodiversity of aiiA among Bacillus species. Bacillus sp. strain MBG11 with polymorphism (115Alanine > Valine) may confer increased stability to AHL lactonase, and can be a potential candidate for heterologous expression and mass production. Microbes with ability to produce AHL-lactonases degrade quorum sensing signals such as AHL by opening of the lactone ring. The naturally occurring diversity of QQ molecules provides opportunities to use them for preventing bacterial infections, spoilage of food, and bioremediation.
A Novel Homozygous Variant of SETX Causes Ataxia with Oculomotor Apraxia Type 2
Huma Tariq,Rashid Imran,Sadaf Naz 대한신경과학회 2018 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.14 No.4
Background and Purpose Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias constitute a highly heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders. This study was carried out to determine the clinical and genetic causes of ataxia in two families from Pakistan. Methods Detailed clinical investigations were carried out on probands in two consanguineous families. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed. Exome sequencing data were examined for likely pathogenic variants. Candidate variants were checked for cosegregation with the phenotype using Sanger sequencing. Public databases including ExAC, GnomAD, dbSNP, and the 1,000 Genome Project as well as ethnically matched controls were checked to determine the frequencies of the alleles. Conservation of missense variants was ensured by aligning orthologous protein sequences from diverse vertebrate species. Results Reverse phenotyping identified spinocerebellar ataxia, autosomal recessive 1 [OMIM 606002, also referred to as ataxia oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2)] and ataxia telangiectasia (OMIM 208900) in the two families. A novel homozygous missense mutation c.202 C>T (p. Arg68Cys) was identified within senataxin, SETX in the DNA of both patients in one of the families with AOA2. The patients in the second family were homozygous for a known variant in ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene: c.7327 C>T (p.Arg2443Ter). Both variants were absent from 100 ethnically matched control chromosomes and were either absent or present at very low frequencies in the public databases. Conclusions This report extends the allelic heterogeneity of SETX mutations causing AOA2 and also presents an asymptomatic patient with a pathogenic ATM variant.
