• PRELIMINARY STUDY ON ATMOSPHERIC INPUT OF NITROGEN TO THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC COASTAL OCEANS

Hui Wang Gao 한국해안해양공학회 1999 학술강연회 발표논문초록집 Vol.1 No.1

A three-dimension regional Eulerian deposition model for nitrogen species has been developed. The important physical processes of emission, transport, diffusion, dry deposition and wet removal by rain, and chemical processes of gas-phase and liquid-phase chemistry are included by dynamics and parameterization. The emissions for this study are obtained from EDGAR (Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research). The model has been employed for the year 1990 from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 in the area from 75˚E to 145˚E in longitude and from 16˚N to 59˚N in latitude with the horizontal resolution of 1˚×1˚. The fluxes of atmospheric input of nitrogen to the northwest pacific coastal oceans are shown.

      • Overexpression of Twist and Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 with Metastasis and Prognosis in Gastric Cancer

Gao, Xing-Hui,Yang, Xue-Qin,Wang, Bi-Cheng,Liu, Shao-Ping,Wang, Fu-Bing Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.9

Objective: Twist, a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, plays a key role in the metastatic progression of human cancer. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 is an endopeptidase that digests basement membrane type IV collagen, therefore being possibly related to tumor progression. It has been reported that Twist and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) are expressed in gastric cancers. However, the exact roles of Twist and MMP-9 in tumor metastasis and prognosis remain unclear. The aim of this study was to casts light on this question. Methods:Twist and MMP-9 expression in tissue sections of 37 gastric carcinomas was evaluated with immunohistochemistry. The staining results were compared with clinicopatholgic features and to patients' outcome. Results: Twist positive expression was significantly increased in gastric cancer cases with lymph node metastasis (P=0.023). But no correlations were found between MMP-9 overexpression and clinicopathologic features, such as recurrence, TNM stage, and lymph node metastasis. Overall survival (OS) was significantly correlated with recurrence, serosa invasion, TNM stages, distant metastasis, and MMP-9 (P=0.027, 0.021, 0.000, 0.024 and 0.036, respectively). Disease-free survival (DFS) was prominently related to recurrence location, serosa invasion and TNM stages (P=0.000, 0.038 and 0.003, respectively). In the Cox regression multivariate analysis, TNM stage, distant metastasis and MMP-9 were significantly associated with prognosis of gastric cancer (P=0.002, 0.019, and 0.032, respectively). Conclusions: This study showed Twist positive expression to be significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer. MMP-9 overexpression is associated with OS, suggesting that MMP-9 is a prognostic indicator for survival in patients with gastric cancer.

      • Damping enhancement of the inerter on the viscous damper in mitigating cable vibrations

        Hui Gao,Hao Wang,Jian Li,Zhi Hao Wang,Youhao Ni,Ruijun Liang 국제구조공학회 2021 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.28 No.1

This paper systematically investigates the effect of the inerter on the damping enhancement of a cable with a viscous damper (VD) installed close to the cable end. Three cases are considered, including the inerter installed parallel with the VD (PVID), the inerter placed in series with the VD (SVID), and the inerter installed at a higher location of the VD (HVID). The asymptotic solutions of the three cases are derived, which can predict the cable modal damping ratio when the inerter and the VD cause minimal perturbation in the undamped frequency of the cable. The effect of the inerter on the modal behavior of the cable with the VD is investigated. Based on the constrained static output LQR method, the effects of the inerter on the damping enhancement of the VD in mitigating cable multi-mode vibrations are further evaluated. The results show that the inerter can improve the control performance of the VD when the inertance is less than the optimum value. Further increasing the inertance beyond the optimum value, the optimum modal damping ratio of the cable decreases, and mode crossover is observed for the cable with PVID and HVID. Compared with the case where the VD and the inerter are located at the same location, the case of the HVID is more effective in mitigating cable multi-mode vibrations.

      • Knockdown of Bcl-3 Inhibits Cell Growth and Induces DNA Damage in HTLV-1-infected Cells)

Gao, Cai,Wang, Xia,Chen, Lin,Wang, Jin-Heng,Gao, Zhi-Tao,Wang, Hui Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.1

Oncoprotein Bcl-3 is perceived as an unusual member of $I{\kappa}B$ family since it can both stimulate and suppress NF-${\kappa}B$ activation. Aberrant Bcl-3 results in increased cell proliferation and survival, suggesting a contribution to malignant potential and elevated levels of Bcl-3 have been observed in many HTLV-1-infected T cell lines and ATL cells. To investigate the specific roles of Bcl-3 in HTLV-1-infected cells, we knocked down Bcl-3 expression using shRNA and then examined the consequences with regard to DNA damage and cell proliferation, as well as NF-${\kappa}B$ activation. The HTLV-1 encoded protein Tax promotes Bcl-3 expression and nuclear translocation. In HTLV-1-infected cells, Bcl-3 knockdown obviously induced DNA damage. Cell growth and NF-${\kappa}B$ activation were reduced in HTLV-1-infected or Tax positive cells when Bcl-3 expression was decreased. Together, our results revealed positive roles of Bcl-3 in DNA stabilization, growth and NF-${\kappa}B$ activation in HTLV-1-infected cells.

Influence of different fatigue loads and coating thicknesses on service performance of RC beam specimens with epoxy-coated reinforcement

        Xiao-Hui Wang,Yang Gao,Run-Dong Gao,Jing Wang,Xi-La Liu 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2017 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.19 No.3

Epoxy-coated reinforcing bars are widely used to protect the corrosion of the reinforcing bars in the RC elements under their in-service environments and external loads. In most field surveys, it was reported that the corrosion resistance of the epoxy-coated reinforcing bars is typically better than the uncoated bars. However, from the experimental tests conducted in the labs, it was reported that, under the same loads, the RC elements with epoxy-coated reinforcing bars had wider cracks than the elements reinforced with the ordinary bars. Although this conclusion may be true considering the bond reduction of the reinforcing bar due to the epoxy coating, the maximum service loads used in the experimental research may be a main reason. To answer these two phenomena, service performance of 15 RC beam specimens with uncoated and epoxy-coated reinforcements under different fatigue loads was experimentally studied. Influences of different coating thicknesses of the reinforcing bars, the fatigue load range and load upper limit as well as fatigue load cycles on the mechanical performance of RC test specimens are discussed. It is concluded that, for the test specimens subjected to the comparatively lower load range and load upper limit, adverse effect on the service performance of test specimens with thicker epoxy-coated reinforcing bars is negligible. With the increments of the coating thickness and the in-service loading level, i.e., fatigue load range, load upper limit and fatigue cycles, the adverse factor resulting from the thicker coating becomes noticeable.

      • Epidemic spreading on complex networks with general degree and weight distributions.

        Wang, Wei,Tang, Ming,Zhang, Hai-Feng,Gao, Hui,Do, Younghae,Liu, Zong-Hua Published by the American Physical Society through 2014 Physical review. E, Statistical, nonlinear, and so Vol.90 No.4

The spread of disease on complex networks has attracted wide attention in the physics community. Recent works have demonstrated that heterogeneous degree and weight distributions have a significant influence on the epidemic dynamics. In this study, a novel edge-weight-based compartmental approach is developed to estimate the epidemic threshold and epidemic size (final infected density) on networks with general degree and weight distributions, and a remarkable agreement with numerics is obtained. Even in complex networks with the strong heterogeneous degree and weight distributions, this approach is used. We then propose an edge-weight-based removal strategy with different biases and find that such a strategy can effectively control the spread of epidemic when the highly weighted edges are preferentially removed, especially when the weight distribution of a network is extremely heterogenous. The theoretical results from the suggested method can accurately predict the above removal effectiveness.

      • Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Awareness, Acceptability, and Decision-Making Factors among Chinese College Students

        Wang, Shao-Ming,Zhang, Shao-Kai,Pan, Xiong-Fei,Ren, Ze-Fang,Yang, Chun-Xia,Wang, Zeng-Zhen,Gao, Xiao-Hong,Li, Man,Zheng, Quan-Qing,Ma, Wei,Zhao, Fang-Hui,Qiao, You-Lin,Sivasubramaniam, Priya Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.7

Background: College students are recommended as the target groups for catch-up human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Systematical exploration of awareness, acceptability, and decision-making factors of HPV vaccination among Chinese college students has been limited. Materials and Methods: A multi-center survey was conducted in mainland China between November 2011 and May 2012. College students aged 18-22 years were stratified by their grade, gender, and major for sampling. Socio-demographic and HPV-related information such as knowledge, perceptions, acceptability, and attitudes were collected through a questionnaire. Results: A total of 3,497 undergraduates completed the questionnaire, among which 1,686 were males. The acceptability of the HPV vaccine was high (70.8%). Undergraduates from high-level universities, at lower grade, or with greater prior knowledge of HPV vaccines showed higher acceptability of HPV vaccination ($p_{trend}$ <0.001). Additionally, undergraduates with vaccination experience outside the National Expanded Program on Immunization (OR=1.29; 95%CI: 1.10-1.51) or fear of HPV-related diseases (OR=2.79; 95%CI: 2.28-3.41) were more willing to accept HPV vaccination. General knowledge of HPV vaccine was low among undergraduates, and safety was a major concern (71.05%). The majority of students wished to pay less than 300RMB for HPV vaccine and chose the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention as the most appropriate venue for vaccination. Conclusions: Although most undergraduates demonstrate positive attitudes towards HPV vaccination, challenges pertaining to introduction exist in China. Corresponding proactive education and governmental subsidy to do so are urgently needed by this age-group population. Suggestions and potential strategies indicated may help shape the future HPV vaccination program in China.

      • Elevated PIVKA-II is Associated with Early Recurrence and Poor Prognosis in BCLC 0-A Hepatocellular Carcinomas

Wang, Bei-Li,Tan, Qi-Wen,Gao, Xing-Hui,Wu, Jiong,Guo, Wei Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.16

Background: To investigate the prognostic value of serum PIVKA-II (prothrombin induced by the absence of vitamin K or antagonist-II) in BCLC (Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer) 0-A hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after curative resection. Materials and Methods: Preoperative sera were collected from 140 patients with BCLC 0-A HCCs undergoing curative resection during 2011-2012 in Zhongshan Hospital. Follow-up ended on November 2013. ELISA was used to detect the serum concentrations of preoperative PIVKA-II. The prognostic value of PIVKA-II and other clinicopathological factors was analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method and the multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. Results: During follow-up, 39 of 140 patients suffered recurrence and the 1-year recurrence rate was 27.9%. The high-PIVKA-II expression group had lower 1-year time to progression (TTP) compared with the low-expression group (54.8% vs 20.2%, p<0.001). Patients with high preoperative PIVKA-II expression showed a relatively higher risk of developing postoperative recurrence than those with low expression in the low-recurrence-risk subgroups, including ${\alpha}$-fetoprotein ${\leq}400ng/mL$ (45.4% vs 16.7%; p=0.006), tumor size ${\leq}5cm$ (54.2% vs 18.1%; p<0.001), single tumor (56.0% vs 19.1%; p<0.001), absence of satellite lesions (53.3% vs 19.8%; p=0.001), absence of vascular invasion (52.6% vs 14.9%; p=0.002), and Edmondson stage I/II (60.9% vs 20.3%; p<0.001). PIVKA-II was the strongest independent prognostic factor for TTP (hazard ratio, 2.877; 95% CI 1.524-5.429; p=0.001). Conclusions: Elevated PIVKA-II is associated with early recurrence of BCLC 0-A HCC after curative resection and can be considered a novel prognostic predictor.
