Mechanistic Investigation of Water Oxidation Catalyzed by Uniform, Assembled MnO Nanoparticles

<P>The development of active water oxidation catalysts is critical to achieve high efficiency in overall water splitting. Recently, sub 10 nm-sized monodispersed partially oxidized manganese oxide nanoparticles were shown to exhibit not only superior catalytic performance for oxygen evolution, but also unique electrokinetics, as compared to their bulk counterparts. In the present work, the water oxidizing mechanism of partially oxidized MnO nanoparticles was investigated using integrated in situ spectroscopic and electrokinetic analyses. We successfully demonstrated that, in contrast to previously reported manganese (Mn)-based catalysts, Mn(III) species are stably generated on the, surface of MnO nanoparticles via a proton-coupled electron transfer pathway. Furthermore, we confirmed as to MnO nanoparticles that the one-electron oxidation step from Mn(II) to Mn(III) is no longer the rate-determining step for water oxidation and that Mn(W)=O species are generated as reaction intermediates during catalysis.</P>

Total Knee Arthroplasty is a surgery of replacing a knee joint with artificial implants. The objectives of the surgery is to restore and correct the lower limb mechanical axis and alleviate pain in the knee joint. Various robotic systems have been proposed to accomplish high accuracy of the alignment of the lower limb mechanical axis and therefore precise cutting of the femur and tibia. These robotic systems for TKA have drawbacks such as increased surgery time and limitation of surgeon’s direct intervention. These drawbacks mainly arises from using the end mill for the cut and adopting an automated scheme of the process. We propose a novel surgical robotic platform that is able to effectively guide the surgeons during TKA. The robotic platform accurately locates the planes of cut and positions the cutting jig. Surgeons use the oscillating saw which they have been using in the conventional surgery, thus the user experiences the familiar force feedback when making the cut, while greatly reducing the load of human resources and surgery time.
The Role of Dark Triad Personality in Comedic Violence Ads

본 연구는 어둠의 3요소로 알려진 개인의 성향(나르시시즘, 마키아벨리즘, 사이코패스)이 폭력성을 지닌 유머 광고 효과에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 어둠의 3요소는 최근 자기애적·반사 회적 경향이 증가하는 사회 추세에 따라 사회심리학에서 많은 학문적 관심을 받고 있다. 그러나 이에 대 한 실증적 연구가 미비하여, 각 요소에 대한 깊은 이론적 및 실제적 지식이 부족한 상황이다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 소비자의 어둠의 3요소적 성향이 유머 광고, 특히 폭력성을 담은 희극적 광고의 효과에 어떠 한 영향을 주는지를 실증적으로 증명하고자 하였다. 실제 집행된 유머 광고들을 대상으로 실험을 실시한 결과, 1) 유머의 내용과 광고되는 제품의 적합성, 2) 광고에서 보여준 폭력의 정당성이 광고효과에 주요한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 어둠의 3요소중 나르시시즘은 폭력성 유머 광고에 긍정적인 효과를, 반대로 마키아벨리즘은 부정적인 효과를 주는 것으로 나타났다. Advertising researchers have taken considerable interest in the effects of comedic violence, but much remains unexplored. The relatively new construct of the Dark Triad (DT) personality (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) provides an interesting perspective into the study of comedic violence because DT is often associated with anti-social behavior. To investigate this relatively new area of inquiry, we conducted an online survey, which found that the fit of the humor to the message and the perceived justification for the violence were significant predictors of perceived humor in comedic violence ads. We also found a positive correlation between narcissism and the effects of perceived humor and a negative correlation between Machiavellianism and the effects of perceived humor. Finally, our findings indicated that ad attitude and brand attitude mediate the relationship between the perceived humor of ads and consumer purchase intentions.
Water Oxidation Mechanism for 3d Transition Metal Oxide Catalysts under Neutral Condition

Electrochemical water splitting to produce hydrogen energy is regarded as a promising energy conversion process for its environmentally friendly nature. To improve cell efficiency, the development of efficient water oxidation catalysts is essentially demanded. For several decades, 3d transition metal oxides have been intensively investigated for their high activity, good durability and low-cost. This review covers i) recent progress on 3d transition metal oxide electrocatalysts and ii) the reaction mechanism of oxygen evolving catalysis, specifically focused on the proposed pathways for the O-O bond formation step.

We developed an underwater robot with tilting thrusters and designed the selective switching controller for stable hovering motion. 6-DOF motion dynamics were divided into two 3-DOF subsystems according to tilting angle, and two PD controllers for each 3-DOF subsystems were designed. Selection logic switched between sub-controllers depending on the error of robot motion in real-time. The selection strategy has a major influence on the state trajectories under selective switching control. This paper compares with three selection strategies which have criterion of maximum value, average, and norm of errors. The characteristics of each strategy are analyzed from simulation results. This work can lay the base for optimal selection strategy.
