Vol.6 No.-

This study was made to go far toward solving the problem of vocabularies in learning English practically. The words recorded at the end table of this research are 2246 in all, in which 1196 words are given from High School English Ⅰ, and 1050 words are from High School English Ⅱ, Each new word 1s counted and checked on frequency in use in the text books. The words recorded as data for this research were collected from the List of New Words at the end of the text books “High School English ⅠㆍⅡ” by Lee Maengsung & Hwang Juckryoon, published at Hangook Neungryeok Gaebal Co. Seoul in 1979. According to this study the result is as follows : 1) In English classes the instructor can emphasize some words with a higher or lower use frequency more than other ones by knowing the use frequency of the words shown in this study. 2) English instrnctors in college are able to have a thorough grasp of the level and ability in vocabularies of the students graduated from high school. 3) To have an achievement test in English to freshman, this will throw some light on selecting Engligh vocabularies in giving them questions for examination. 4) This will also help the students to discriminate between the vocabularies to have been taught and those not to be taught, and it will animate the motive to stuby English.

申弘湜 제주한라대학 1975 論文集 Vol.1 No.-

This study was made to contribute to solving the problem of vocabularies in learning English practically. According to this study the results were summarized as follows: 1) In English classes the instructors can easily make a point of teaching vocabularies by understanding how high or low frequency of use a vocabulary has had in high school English Ⅱ. 2) English instructors in higher educational facilities can obviously grasp a level or ability on vocabularies of the students who were graduated from high school. 3) In presenting questions of college entrance examination, this will throw some light on selecting the vocabularies of English. 4) This will also have to help the students to discriminate the vocabularies which have been taught from the others, and it will animate the motive to study English.

      • "A Rose for Emily"에 나타난 한계상황의 여성상

신홍식 제주한라대학 1993 論文集 Vol.17 No.-

William F aulkner was born in Mississippi and lived there nearly all of his life. He had one year of college education. In New Orleans Sherwood Anderson helped him to study literature. He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1950. After two years as writer in residence at the University of Virginia, he moved his home to Charlottesville, where he died in 1962. He is now considered the greatest fiction writer in English in the twentieth century. Is is said that "A Rose for Emily" is one of the most important short stories by him. "A Rose for Emily" is not the story on the South Region in the United States of America but one on the universal, fundamental root of human beings. Miss Emily is a combination of idol and scapegoat for the community. The community feels admiration for Miss Emily. They feel a sort of awe of her presence. On the other hand, her queerness, the fact that she cannot compete with them in their ordinary life, the fact that she is hopelessly out of touch with the modern world, all of these things make them feel superior to her, and also to that past which she represents. It is, then, Miss Emily's complete detachment which gives her actions their special meaning for the community. Miss Emily, since she is consciously better than other people, can, at the same time, be worse than other people. She is worse than other people, but at the same time, as the narrator implies, she remains somehow admirable. She insists on meeting the world on her own terms. She never begs for sympathy, she refuses to shrink into an amiable old maid, she never accepts the community's ordinary judgements or values. This independence of spirit and pride can twist the individual into a sort of monster, but, at the same time, this refusal to accept the herd values carries with it a dignity and courage. The community senses this, in other words, the community accepts her into its honored history. Miss Emily's pride, isolation, and independence remind one of factors in the character of the typical tragic hero. It can be pointed out that, just as the horror of her deed lies outside the ordinary life of the community, so the magnificence of her independence lies outside its ordinary virtues.

      • George Orwell의 Animal Farm과 政治的 Allegory

申弘湜 제주한라대학 1991 論文集 Vol.15 No.-

"Animal Farm" by George Orwell has been counted among the best of his works along with his political novel "Nineteen Eighty-four." And it has been reputed to be a work embodying the author's whole mental energy. "Animal Farm" is all satires against Stalin Dictatorshop by means of describing funny behavior of animals vividly, which gives us warning against an atmosphere of totalitarianism. It may fairly be presumed that Rebellion of Animal in this story is a satire on Russian Rovolution in 1917, being contrasted the characters in the story with the historical situation of Russia of those days. Mr. Jones of the Manor Farm is directed at Czar of Czarist Russia, old Major which was prophet in the Farm is a hit at Karl Marx who made a declaration of the Communist Manifesto, realistic dictator Napoleon which reigned over all other animals talks at Stalin, and idealist Snowball which was expelled by Napoleon showed Trotsky. To build the Windmill in this story is a satire on the Five Years Plans, unbroken toil and achievements of Boxer in the construction field of the Windmill satirize Stakhanovism, Dogs which were bred by Napoleon secretly do Cheka trained by Stalin, Rebellion led by three young Black Minorcas pullets does that of Kulak, idolization toward Napoleon does idolization toward Stalin. Discriminative treatment among animals in Animal Farm is alien from equalitarianism advocating militantly as the one of chief principles of communism, it gives the seal to dissociating practice of communism from its theory. This story being based on Russian historical fact, Orwell put his heart and soul into writing this work. I tried to draw an analogy between real life of animals in this satirical novel and Russian historical facts since Russian Rovolution in 1917, especially between the characters in this novel and the leading figures on the Russian historical stage. This novel everywhere has given evidence that "Complete power corrups completely", and one-party rule under an absolutist in political system strikes human beings with terror. In conclusion, this novel has given a lesson that we must arm ourselves against danger of dictatioship for the future.

      • 헤밍웨이 作「THE KILLERS」에 대한 分析 試考

申弘湜 제주한라대학 1981 論文集 Vol.7 No.-

<The Killers> is one of the masterpieces in short stories by Hemingway, and it is touched much in learning style, symbol, death, etc. by him. Especially, it being treated with textbookish from the point of the third person observer, it may be taken for grated that we analyze it synthetically. 1) The, theme<The Killers> itself is the symbol of death and violence which may be eternal theme of Hemingway, and he used the four scenes recurrently just as his literary life and fixed upon the theme and style of the work as setting. 2) Main-character is Nick Adams who has figured in eleven pieces of his other short stories. Nick Adams in the work is under the violence directly for the first time in the growth period toward an adult,in which he observes and concentrates his attention on the situation and then experiences the fact of violence and evil. 3) That is the image of human being, in the work, which does not remain a passive spectator of the violence or waiting for it but admits and does deal with it actively. 4) In this short story he used short easy vocabularies and sentences, the way of repeating effectiveness of words and sentences, speedy tempo of dialogue, a complete hard-boiled external description, and an expression by symbolic substance, etc. as he had made use of the way of hard-boiled style in his other works. 5) As we research into a work by Hemingway, we must study it from various aspects, not only on synthetic research but on style, symbol and the meaning of death as his life, thought and literary characteristic, moreover as a prier condition a study on him must be preceded by research on every work by him. 6) Up to now study on the works by Hemingway has been conducted to his long stories chiefly, but Hemingway wrote as many as forty-nine short stories besides his long ones. As we think over that every short story by him is excellent works, much more study on them must de written in earnest. 7) I think this study forms a part of what one should do, and another way of checking up on literary characteristic of Hemingway.

      • George Orwell의 Nineteen Eighty-four와 現代社會

申弘湜 제주한라대학 1985 論文集 Vol.9 No.-

George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four is the expression of a mood, and warning. The mood it expresses is that of near despair about the future of man, and the warning is that unless the course of history changes, men all over the world will lose their most human qualities, will become soulless automaions, and will not even be aware of it. In the twentieth century, World War Ⅰ was death to millions for the illusion of fighting for peace and democracy. The war was the beginning of that development tended in a short time to destroy a two-thousand-year-old Western tradition of hope and to transform it into a mood of despair. World War Ⅱ in which all the fighting nations lost some of the moral considerations which had still existed in World War I, brought unlimited destruction of civilian populations, cities, and eventually used atomic bombs against Japan. Since then the human race has been confronted with an even greater danger, if not of all mankind, by thermonuclear weapons as they exist today as they are being developed in increasingly frightful proportions. Most people, however, are not consciously aware of this threat and of their own hopelessness After World War Ⅱ, the government of all countries became convinced that the continuation of the war would mean the end of organized society, and hence of their own power. First of all, Orwell shows the economic significance of continuous arms production, without which the economic system cannot function. Another important aspect is Orwell's description of the nature of truth, which on the surface is a picture of Stalin's treatment of truth. The leaders of totalitarianism in Nineteen Eighty-four are aware of the fact that they themselves have only one aim that is power. To them power is not a means but an end. In describing the kind of thinking which is dominant in Nineteen Eighty-four, Orwell has coined a word, DOUBLETHINK. Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them, and the method of doublethink is employed by Communists. Orwell's expression is exceedingly depressing, it is not only a picture of an enemy but of the whole human race at the end of the twentieth century. One can react to this picture in two ways; either by becoming more hopeless and resigned, or by feeling there is still time, and by responding with greater clarity and greater courage. Orwell is not a prophet of disaster, he wants to warn and to awaken us. The hope can be realized only by recognizing, so Nineteen Eighty-four teaches us, the danger with which all men are confronted today, the danger of society of automations who will have lost every trace of individuality, of love, of critical thought.

      • 英語敎育 評價方法 改善方案에 關한 調査硏究

申弘湜 제주한라대학 1976 論文集 Vol.2 No.-

English teaching as foreign language in Korea lasts for six years constantly from the 1st year of middle school to the 3rd year of high school. But in fact it does not achieve the expected results in spite of their perpetual efforts and a long period of time. It is the public opinion that the expressive ability is especially poor among the fields of English studying. Why is the expressive skill so poor then? As one of the reasons, it is said that, that English teachers have made practical application of the traditional methods of teaching, in other words grammar-translation methods of teaching have made the students be so poor of their expressive skill that they should select the aural-oral methods of teaching in having their English classes. I think it is true, too. But I try to inquire into one of the reasons from the side of evolution of valuational method in English teaching with this Study. As the result of this research I have found it more useful way to apply the essay type of examination than to do the objective type test in order to improve English ability of the students. But if they are inclined to apply to essay type of examination in all, of course there is fear that they lose the objectivity for the result of valuation, and that they have the intricacy and diminution of efficiency for examination marks. As yet they are all the matters of transaction for the results of valuation, therefore, in order to raise the public confidence for education, to correct the students' easygoing way of studying, and to progress the educational level, it is proper that we should overcome the difficulties like them above, and should apply the essay type of examination by breaking from the objective type test.

The lingual papillae of the mouse, the rabbit, and the cat were observed by light microscope and scanning electron microscope The results were followings 1. The filiform papillae of the mouse were classified to typical filiform papillae, conical filiform papillae with 2 branched tips, and general conical filiform papillae. The outmost layers of the filiform papillae of the mouse keratinted well, middle layer of the anterior portion of the papillae appeaered a lot of small basophilic granules. The fungiform papillae existed between the filiform papillae with the peripheral folds of epithelia. A vallate papilla existed on the posterior portion of conical filiform papillae and their shape was lenticuiar. 2. The filiform papillae of the rabbit revealed various type (5 types). Keratin layer of the papillae existed vertical to long axis of the papillae on the posterior portion of the papillae. Stratified squamous epithelium on the anterior portion of the papillae existed with a few keratin layers and the intercellular materials of strong PAS positive reaction appeared between the these cells. The fungiform papillae of the rabbit existed between the filiform papillae and had a few peripheral folds. The foliate papillae of the rabbit existed on the lateral portion of tongue root, consisted of the paralleled folds. Taste buds located in the mid-lateral portion of the papillae concentrically. 3. The filiform papillae on the anterior portion of the cat tongue shaped anterior and posterior projection, the filiform palillae on the middle portion had a projections of columnar shape, which papillae surface appeared as onion surface. The conical filiform papillae on the posterior portion had many folds on the lower portion of the papillae. The fungiform papillae of the cat existed between the filiforr papillae with a columnar shaped projectionand proturded from the surface. The vallate papillae of the cat existed between the conical filiform papillae and their shape was typical form of vallate papillae.
