Erythropoietin (EPO) is known to have numerous biological functions. While its primary function is during haematopoiesis, recent studies have shown that EPO plays important role in cytoprotection, immunomodulation, and antiapoptosis. These secondary functions of EPO are integral to tissue protection following hypoxic injury, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and spinal cord injury in the central nervous system. This review focuses on experimental evidence documenting the neuroprotective effects of EPO in organ-specific autoimmune nervous system disorders such as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN). In addition, the immunomodulatory role of EPO in the pathogenesis of EAE and EAN animal models of human multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barré syndrome, respectively, will be discussed.

The efficacy of the radioprotective effect of Callophyllis japonica ethyl acetate (CJEA) extract was studied by comparing it to that of amifostine, a well-known radioprotective agent, and by evaluating the dose reduction factor, an indicator of radioprotective efficacy. Pretreatment with CJEA extract (100 mg/kg body weight) prior to receiving 12 Gy irradiation significantly improved the survival of jejunal crypts at 3.5 day post-irradiation, but attenuated the level of malondialdehyde compared to vehicle alone (P < 0.01). A similar gastroprotective effect was also obtained in the amifostine-treated irradiated group (P < 0.01). The efficacy of the radioprotective effect was further confirmed by the dose reduction factor, 1.41. Collectively, these results suggest that CJEA extract is a useful radioprotectant whose efficacy is similar to that of amifostine and whose radioprotective mechanism is in part the reduction of lipid peroxidation caused by gamma irradiation.

This paper discusses the standards for disaster prevention and safety management of rail tunnel. The purpose is to establish safety management standards and methods of disaster prevention for each underground traffic spaces, after the full revision of the cause of accidents and its effects, the function and selection of safety equipment, and the efficiency and convenience of maintenance, standards based on prevention and reduction is proposed to reaction to disaster.

This paper dealt with the histopathological findings on the natural cysticercosis in pigs. Three cases of porcine cysticercosis, which had been kept in the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Cheju. University more than ten years, were histopathologically examined in order to see the host reaction to the parasite. Capsules containing scolex were mainly found in the fascia of skeletal muscle, heart, and brains. Microscopically, cysticerci in the epicardium and the fascia of skeletal muscles were encapsulated with fibroblasts and collagen fibers. Around capsules, there was infiltration of eosinophils, lymphocytes and macrophages, although the degree and severity of inflammatory reaction varied case by case. Cerebral cortex also had the inflammatory exudate of lymphoid cells in the vicinity of the scolex. whereas perivascular lymphocytic cuffings were commonly seen around capsules. GFAP immunoreactive fibers formed a limiting membrane along the outer side of capsules. There was also proliferation of GFAP-positive astrocytes encirling infiltrating lymphocytes around vessels. In the central nervous system, astrocytes and lympoid cells play an important role in the demarcation of cysts and local immunity, respectively. In conclusion, host tissue reaction in porcine cysticercosis seemed to vary significantly according to the affected organs of pigs. It is assumed that capsules containing worms seemed to be formed at early stage of cysticercosis.

To investgate the causative Virus in aborbon of horse in Cheju, we examined the spleen of affected foal by immunohtochemistq and immunogold electron microscopy using EHV - specific antisera. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that a large number of EHV immunoreadive cells were deteded in the red pulp as well as in the sinudoidal cells in the affected spleen. By the immunogold electron microxopy(EM) of crude preparation of EHV culture, electron dense gold paricles were labelled along the envelope of amorphous virus parhcles with vanng sizes of 50-200nm. We suppose that immunohistochemical method is good for the diagnosis of tissues in EHV infections, and immunogold EM is recommended for the study of virus dia gnosis of fluid specimen as well as the ultrastustural study.

Oral infection of colostrum-deprived, neonatal piglets with porcine enterovirus serotype 3 can result in hepatic lesions with a short incubation period. In the thin section of the affected liver, crystalline arrays of virus particles characteristic of picornavirus were identified in the sinusoid endothelial cells and Kupffer cells. There were also cytoplasmic aggregates of electron- dense, virus-like particles in the hepatocytes. These findings suggest that porcine enterovirus serotype 3 has hepatotropism as well as neurotropism.
