Expression of nitric oxide synthase isoforms in the porcine ovary during follicular development

The expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms in the ovaries of pigs was examined to study the involvement of nitric oxide, a product of NOS activity, in the function of the ovary. Western blot analysis detected three types of NOS in the ovary, including constitutive neuronal NOS (nNOS), endothelial NOS (eNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS); eNOS immunoreactivity was more intense compared with that of iNOS or nNOS. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated the presence of nNOS and eNOS in the surface epithelium, stroma, oocytes, thecal cells, and endothelial cells of blood vessels. Positive immunoreactions for nNOS and iNOS were detected in the granulosa cells from multilaminar and antral follicles, but not in those of unilaminar follicles. iNOS was detected in the surface epithelium, oocytes, and theca of multilaminar and antral follicles. Taking all of the findings into consideration, the observed differential expression of the three NOS isoforms in the ovary suggests a role for nitric oxide in modulating reproduction in pigs.

To investigate the pattern of expression of osteopontin (OPN) in tissues of the central nervous system (CNS) responding to peripheral immunological stimulation, theexpression of OPN was studied in the spinal cord of rats with experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN). In this model system, the sciatic nerves and spinal nerve roots arethe target organs of EAN and the spinal cord is a remote organ that may be indirectly affected. OPN was constitutively expressed in some astrocytes adjacent to the pia mater and neurons in normal rats. In rats with EAN,OPN was increased in the same cells and in some inflammatory cells, including macrophages in the subarachnoid space. Expression of CD44, a receptor of OPN, was weak in normal spinal cord tissue andincreased in the entire spinal cord parenchyma in rats with EAN, as well as in inflammatory cells. These findings suggest that inflammatory cells as well as reactiveastrocytes are major sources of OPN and CD44 in the spinal cord of rats with EAN. Further study is needed to elucidate the functional role of OPN in the spinal cordaffected by EAN.
Enterovirus 감염 돼지의 간에서 virus의 형태학적 관찰

Enterovirus감염 돼지의 감염초기 virus의 동태를 규명하고자 초유를 섭취하지 않는 1~2일령의 돼지에 돼지 enterovirus 3형을 경구감염시킨후 간조직을 전자현미경으로 관찰하였던 바 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 감염후 3일째 부검한 돼지의 간에서 간세포의 심한 공포변성이 인정되었고 간 동양혈관 내피세포 및 Kupffer세포에서 picornavirus의 특징적인 virus결정이 출현하였으며 확장된 ER은 virus 결정과 밀접하게 관련되어 있었다. 또한 동양혈관 세포와 간세포에서는 미숙한 virus모양의 입자들로 구성된 세포질내 봉입체가 관찰되기도 하였다. 이상의 소견으로 보아 돼지 enterovirus 3형은 신경친화성 뿐만 아니라 감염초기 간에 친화성이 큰 것으로 생각된다. Oral infection of colostrum-deprived, neonatal piglets with porcine enterovirus serotype 3 can result in hepatic lesions with a short incubation period. In the thin section of the affected liver, crystalline arrays of virus particles characteristic of picornavirus were identified in the sinusoid endothelial cells and Kupffer cells. There were also cytoplasmic aggregates of electron- dense, virus-like particles in the hepatocytes. These findings suggest that porcine enterovirus serotype 3 has hepatotropism as well as neurotropism.
Effects of Kainic acid on the Duck Retina

Kainic acid가 오리 망막에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 kainic acid $50{\mu}l$($1.0{\mu}mol$)를 오리의 안구내로 주입한 후 망막을 경시적으로 관찰하였던 바 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 주사후 8시간째 망막의 내내핵층과 내망상층에서 공포화가 인정되었고 24시간째는 내핵층에서 핵농축이 현저하였으며 48시간째의 예에서는 농축된 핵이 상당수 소실되면서 망막의 두께도 다소 얇게 나타났다. 주사후 96시간과 10일째는 내핵층을 구성하는 대부분의 세포가 소실되어 망막의 두께가 상당히 얇아졌고 내망상층의 두께도 경시적으로 얇아지는 경향이었다.

홍역이환개의 중추신경계에서 발생한 수초탈락을 수반하는 뇌척수염을 병리조직학적으로 관찰하고 조직반응과 수축탈락의 과정을 알아보기 위하여 중추신경계 조직을 파라핀 포매, 절편을 만들고 병소가 빈발하는 소뇌와 시신경로는 수초의 주요 구성단백인 MBP와 MAG 그리고 별아교세포의 Marker인 GFAP의 항혈청을 반응시켜 면역세포학적으로 관찰하였다. 조직학적으로는 대뇌에서 신경세포의 일부괴사, 신경아교세포의 결절형성, 소뇌에서는 4뇌실에 인접하여 백질부에서 수초의 공포변성, 수초탈락과 염증세포의 침윤이 현저하였고 피질부의 과립층에 인접한 부위와 시신경로에서도 수초탈락이 인정되었다. MBP와 MAG를 면역반응시킨 결과 수초의 공포화와 수초탈락이 현저한 부위에서는 MBP와 MAG가 동시에 소실되었고 부위에 따라서는 MBP또는 MAG가 먼저 소실되기도 하였다. 동시에 별아교세포의 반응은 수초탈락 초기에는 GFAP양성의 섬유와 세포가 크게 증가한 반면 수초탈락이 심하게 진행된 부위에서는 오히려 소실되는 경향이었다. 따라서 홍역이환 개에서 발생되는 수초탈락은 일차적으로 수초가 공격을 받아 파괴됨을 알 수 있었고 동시에 부위에 따라 다른 소견을 요인별로 비교하였다. Central nervous system of two dogs with natural canine distemper was investigated histopathologically and immunocytochemically with antisera to MBP, MAG and GFAP. Histopathologically, there were neuronal degeneration and diffuse gliosis in the cerebrum, vacuolar degeneration, hypertrophy of astrocytes and demyelination in cerebellar white matter adjacent to the 4th ventricle and optic tracts showing non-inflammatory demyelinating encephalomyelitis (Summers and Appel, 1987). Immunohistochemically, there was a concurrent disappearance of MBP and MAG in the well developed demyelinating lesion in the cerebellar white matter. At the margin of demyelination, Loss of both MBP and MAG varied on the stage of demyelinating process. GFAP-positive astrocytes were hypertrophied and contained canine distemper virus intranuclear inclusions. GFAP-positive fibers were increased at the early stage of demyelination, and then were not immunoreaeted at the well developed demyelination. Hypertrophic astrocytes with intranuclear inclusions were commonly identified in the interfascular layer without myelin vacuolation and demyelination. This is the first study of primary demyelination and astroglial reactions in natural CDE investigated using immunocytochemistry of two myelin proteins and GFAP. Concurrent loss of MBP and MAG suggest that the myelin sheath is the target in the demyelinating process in CDE.

Two cases of verminous arteritis were chosen for this case. These horses were originally submitted for necropsy in the Cheju horse race. Case 1 : At necropy, there was increased ascite, thickened ab-dominal aorta at junction of cranial mesenteric artery. In the aorta, there was a long thrombus embed-ded with strongylus vulgaris larvae. Some larvae were also firmly attached in the aortic intima Histologically, there was infiltration of neutropliils, eosinophils, and macrophages in the tunica media. At the junction of thrombus and arterial intima, there was proliferation of vessels. Case 2 : At necropsy, there was thickened abdominal aorta, which showed typical verminous arteritis with thrombus. Histologically, ceseous tissues with haematopoietic tissue was recognized in the aortic wall.
