      • Shakespeare의 "King Lear 연구"

        홍문표 군산대학교 1976 群山水産專門大學 硏究報告 Vol.10 No.3

A great many critics have lauded King Lear. Shelly stated "the most perfect specimen Of dramatic poetry in the World", A recent critic, E. I. Fripp commented that it is' the noblest spiritual utterance since La Davina Commedia. William Empson declared "whatever one says about this huge play feels very inadequate, As a whole they have appreciated it through their eyes in the various point of view. It is chiefly because the feelings which flow throughout 'the Tragedy of King Lear' are dealt with complicatedly and enormously. Accordingly one must recognize precisely the view of life, politics and history dominated over in the Middle Ages. This study puts emphasize on this point. The tragedy of Shakespeare has originated its pattern from Seneca, thg Roman tragedian. The thought of retirement from earthly life and purgatory gives more significant meaning to the death of main characters in the play. Ultimately it could be concluded that evil is punished and virtue rewarded.

      • 詩語에 關한 硏究

洪文杓 명지대학교 1985 明大論文集 Vol.16 No.-

This study is concerned with arranging the theorys on the poetic diction and formulating it. The characters of poetic dictions, discussing in modern theory of poetry, are the same as following. First, poetic dictions are the language which pursue the identity not only seek its own interest for objective world but also unify the world devided. Second, Poetic dictions are the figurative language. Mataphor, translate more easier and definit the meaning of things than the other, explain it through things which have already existed similar to it. Third, poetic diction express its existence. Everybody has a desire to find the most clear fact or truth and to inform of it. The true value, however, always keeps secret. It is the poem that wants to express a hiden truth through the concreate things. Forth, poetic dictions have the double meaning. They contain not denotative meaning but connotative meaning and also have ambiguity. And we know clearly the meaning of poetic diction through the contexts. The structure of poetic diction, especially of the view point of linguistics, is following. 1. As the linguistic difference between semantics and phonology can be explained by the opposite relation, poetic diction is expressed with the form of opposite character. This character of opposition is an method which shows strong emotional effects. 2. The repetitions of fixed poetic wording or the familiar words rather marked and automatic. Poetic diction restor the freshness of perception by emerging from established meaning of language. It is the essence of poetic art that departure from mode of perception. 3. Both the choice and union of poetic dictions are decided by the similarity and contiguity.

This paper is the study on the relating aspect of ecological poetry and Christianity in the rapidly changing society. That attracting our concern at the mark of the 21st century, is the progresses produced by technological civilization like information communication revolution, expansion of cyber world, and genetic engineering. However, we can not sure how present technological civilization would enrich our existence, or if current circumstances helpless to their power are really reliable or not. This crisis is not limited to that biological one due to environmental pollution such as water, atmosphere and air as the origin of all creature. Man initiation this contamination has caused his mental and spiritual catastrophe. Under this condition, the campaign of ecological poetry is presented as a survival issue in the reality, not as a sentimental one. Since environmental ruin and crisis of survival crisis already surpasses its danger limit. Thus ecological poetry needs factual complaint and witness of the local scene of environmental destruction and crisis. That is, the institution should be changed from man focused to life focused, environmental destruction to friendliness, materialism to spiritual equilibrium, rationality focused to its harmony with sentiment, and scientific knowledge and understanding of ecology should be preceded, and the philosophical view of nature to life awareness should be fundamentally changed. In the end, the task of ecological literature needs diverse work to change this integrated conversion. So it should be recognized that only conventional literary genre giving shape ti realistic topics through imaginary forms should not be insisted, and for doing so, a new one to collapse exclusive borders with philosophy and tolerate it should be sought.

      • Santiago 의 自然觀 : Santiago's Outlook on Nature

        홍문표 군산대학교 1980 群山水産專門大學 硏究報告 Vol.14 No.2

We can find the typical narration which flows straight into the interrior of reader's mind without any formal restriction. As Emerson indicated, the quality of the imagination is to flow, and not to freeze. With the sufficient approach to Hemingway's vision of himself and the world, we can figure out his real attitude toward liter-ature. When we admit the fact that the essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer, there would be much more illusions to perceive in Santiago's outlook on nature according to Hemingway's code. That is also his morality illuminating his own honor and dignity in his literary works.

      • Theodore Dreiser의 비극적 인간상

        洪文杓 군산대학교 1983 群山水産專門大學 硏究報告 Vol.17 No.2

As the naturalists were the source of nagative when they looked about the environment they come to stay, so was Dreiser - and he creates a world in which morality restricts and represses natural desire, a world in which external forces conflict with internal motives, passions with convention. No one there is no denying the fact he has realized another Dreiser through Carrie and Hurstwood, that is, a self-portrait . And he tried at best to carry out his realistic intention. He was telling the story of Emma and L.A. Hopkins. He always puts the emphasis upon man's aspiring nature and he shows them struggling to get free ; and illusion of freedom gives his novels a dimension that is usually lacking in other naturalistic fiction. Even though it is immeasurably far away from the religious and mechanistic view of life, you can listen to the true voice, saying - this has been my vision of life-life with its romance and cruelty, its pity and terror, its joys and anxiety, its peace and conflict. You may not like my vision-but it is the only one that I have seen and felt, it is the only one I can give you - This solution is without doubt the most imperturbable, most realistic figure, as we relate to his vision of life. I believe even at his date, every one will find out the explicit answer and one of the best example of American realism from his works.

      • Of Mice and Men에 나타난 Biological Allegory에 관한 연구

        洪文杓 군산대학교 1987 群山水産專門大學 硏究報告 Vol.21 No.1

John Steinbeck was a native Californian, and he was occupied with exploring the region of the Salinas Valley in his novels. He had published eight volumes of fiction which showed various forms and produced an illusion of having been written from various points of view. Among them "Of Mice and Men" was a compact little drama, contrived with almost too much cleverness and a parable which criticized humanity. Mr. Steinbeck almost always in his fiction is dealing with either with the lower animals or with humans so rudimentary that they are almost on the animal level. Lennie in "Of Mice and Men likes to carry around pet animals toward which as well as toward human beings he has murderous animal instincts; that is why he kills a mouse in his palm while he brings it in his pooket for the purpose of patting as is the case, that Lennie suffocates Curley's wife while he is suppressing Curley's wife's groans. In the ordinary course of nature, living organisms are continually being destroyed, and among the principal things that destory them are the predatory appetite and the competitive instinct that are necessary for the very survival of eating and breeding creatures, This impulse of the killer has been preserved in a simpleton like Lennie Of Mice and Men in a form in which it is almost innocent; and yet Lennie has learned from his more highly developed friend that to yield to it is to do something "bad". In his struggle against the instinct, he loses. Is Lennie bad or good? As the author implies that all our human intentions are sometimes betrayed by the uncertaintied of our animal nature, Lennie is also betrayed. Lennie is, however dealt as a violator and considered to be sent to another world as punishment.
