Hemingway 硏究 : ("The Sun Also Rises")를 中心으로

Ernest Hemingway is one of the representative writers of Lost Generation American Literary Field ever had in the 20th century. Among his great works, the Sun Also Rises prefaces vividly its generation. He became a nuclus of the writers who took an active part in their new productions. The material civilization after the World War I brought about spiritual poverty to man degrading his value. He gives a scathing satire on the world he belongs to with nihility anti disillusion in the sun Also Rises. The discussion of the Sun Also Rises concludes several ambiguous questions concerning the Hemingway's code and suggests that the code is somewhat more allusive than it at first to be. According to his literary principle, he was able to apply his knowledge in a practical manner to the way he lived his life, and he produced a truer account anything factual can be. Just a word in conclusion, the Sun Also Rises is composed of an artistic excellence on a high level and sincerity.

Perhasps no less important a factor than cultural patterns in a foreign reputation is his publisher. However Fitzgerald has only recently been published by a few printers in Korea. With the view of analyzing and detailing his early works, these materials are cited from "Though-book" a childhood diary, and "The Ledger", an autobiography. Foeshadowing of his major themes can be found in his early pieces of fiction and he was even then exploring the techniques that were later to appeare in his full-length fiction. To be sought a comprehensive subject of their fiction, there are some born authors who do not create for their world, but for their readers'. This is particularly true of Fitzgerald, and he sowed the lively harvest that our era goes to reap.

"The Grapes of Wrath"에 나타난 Steinbeck의 저항의식

Steinbeck은 The Grapes of Wrath에서 뿐만 아니라 The Long Valley나 The White Quail 이나 In Dubious Battle에서도 사회적 문제점에 깊은 관심을 보였다. 그는 작품을 통해서 정치적 배경을 찾으려고 하지 않고 사회적 병폐를 찾고자 했기에 그의 자연주의적 소설은 사회적 불의를 폭로함을 겨냥하고 있다. 그는 인도주의나 인생에 근거를 두고 인간의 품위 상실과 인간성 하락에 분노를 가져 왔었다. 고로 다음의 것은 그가 본 구체적으로 정의를 내린 인간상이라 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 그는 말하기를 자라고 일하고 창조하고자 못견뎌 하는 육체와 정신, 이것이 백만배로 커진게 원인인 것이다. 인간의 기능 가운데 가장 뚜렷한 기능, 일하고자 못견디는 근육 그 단 한가지 욕망을 초월하여 창조하려고 견디지 못하는 정실 이것이 인간이다‥‥‥‥. 인간은 뭇 유기체나 무기체와 달라 자기 노동을 넘어서서 성취의 계단을 걸어 올라가 자기 업적을 앞서는 자리에 나타나는 것이기 때문이다라고 했다. 실은 이렇게 하여 강력하고 적극적 이상주의가 그의 작품에 나타나기 시작한 것이다. 그는 무엇보다도 인간의 완결성을 신봉한 작가로서 주장하기를, 인간의 완성 가능성을 강력히 믿지 않는 작가는 문학에 공헌도 없으며 작가로서의 자격도 없다고 했다. 따라서 독자들은 언제나 신경을 쓰고 있어야 한다. 아무리 완곡해도 그의 은유를 즉시 파악할 마음의 여유를 갖고, 아무리 거칠어도 그의 문학적 사상을 즉시 깨달을 수 있을 태세를 갖춰야 한다. 이런 점으로 미루어 보아 독자들이 그의 철학을 그의 언행의 뜻으로 받아 들이지 못한다면 그의 작품이 과장되게 또는 참담하게 느껴질지도 모르며 참다운 뜻을 찾기 어려울 것이다. 그의 작품을 이해하는 최선책은 중산급에 대한 적개심과 신달함, 멸시 그리고 종교에 대한 적대 행위를 표시한 인간생활을 설명해 주는 것이다. 앞을 내다보지 못하는 보수주의자는 성장하고 있는 미국인의 꿈과 서민들의 각성을 두려워 했다. 모든 지방에서 멀리 쫓겨나고 날로 두려움이 더해가는 것으로 인간을 파멸시키기 위하여 인간의 손으로 만든 제도라는 것이 있었다. 그들이 더 가깝게 뭉치고 즉 집단구조체 인 가족 유대와 이민들과의 동료의식을 형성하고 있었다. 가정 애착심이 있기에 그들 부모들의 권위있는 태도는 애정표시가 충분히 되고 소용돌이치는 상황에서도 순종하게 된다. 여기에는 그 나름대로의 이상향을 확대시키고 질서 있는 민주사회를 구현하고자 하는 Steinbeck의 성실하고도 강력한 의지가 있다. Steinbeck showed deep concern at the social problems not only in "The Grapes of Wrath" but in "The Long Valley" , The White Quail", and "In Dubious Battle". He didn't try to discover the political background but the labour under social diseases through his works, and his naturalistic novel aimed at the exposure of social injustice. Under the foundation of humanism and life, he had brought his wrath upon lost human dignity and fallen human nature. So it is not too much to say that the following is a specific and defined human figure of his view. He said muscles and mild aching to grow, to work, to create, multiplied a million times. The last clean definite function of man - muscles aching to work, mind aching to create beyond the single need - this is man. - For man, unlike any other thing organic or inorganic in the universe, grows beyond his work, walks up the stairs of his accomplishments. So it was that intensive and positive, idealism began to appear in his work. He was a writer who embraced human consummation above all and asserted that a writer who did not passionately believe in the perfectibility of man had no dedication nor any membership in literature . Accordingly the readers must be ever on the watch, ready at once to lay hold of his metaphors, however euphemistic , to realize to his thought, however crude. In the light of this if they fail to translate his philosophy into words or action, it might be hard to extract true meaning from his works in which they would feel both exaggerative and miserable. The best way of understanding his works will be giving an account of the human lives that exemplified hostility, bitterness and contempt toward the middle classes and antagonism toward religion. The blind conservatism feared the growing American dreams and awareness on the part of the outcast. In every part of the country, driven further and further, growing if frightfulness everyday, were manmade regimes for man's destruction. The further they were driven, the closer they stayed, that is to say, a group organism, figuring their family tie and companionship with other migrants. Since there was a domesticity, their parents' authority was sufficient in the demonstration of tenderness and made them submissive even in the whirling situation. Also there was Steinbeck's integrate and passionate intention to enlarge his own Utopia, and embody a democratic society in order.
