Adolescent Mothers' Perceptions of Birthtime Care : Potential Implications for Infant Development and Education

Holly E . BrophyHerb,Alice Sterling Honig 한국유아교육학회 1999 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Vol.4 No.1

Seventy-eight unmarried adolescent mothers, ages 14-19 years, completed an open-ended interview at 3 weeks postpartum to ascertain their perceptions of the nursing care they received during labor and delivery, and immediately after childbirth. Qualitative analyses of interview data revealed mothers‘ perceptions of components of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with care. These results emphasize the importance of the attentiveness and emotional support of nurses and other early education professionals in the process of providing care to adolescent mothers.

Comprehensive Review on Kisspeptin and Its Role in Reproductive Disorders

        Holly Clark,Waljit S.Dhillo,Channa N.Jayasena 대한내분비학회 2015 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.30 No.2

Kisspeptin has recently emerged as a key regulator of the mammalian reproductive axis. It is known that kisspeptin, acting centrally via the kisspeptin receptor, stimulates secretion of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH). Loss of kisspeptin signaling causes hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism in humans and other mammals. Kisspeptin interacts with other neuropeptides such as neurokinin B and dynorphin, to regulate GnRH pulse generation. In addition, a growing body of evidence suggests that kisspeptin signaling be regulated by nutritional status and stress. Kisspeptin may also represent a novel potential therapeutic target in the treatment of fertility disorders. Early human studies suggest that peripheral exogenous kisspeptin administration stimulates gonadotrophin release in healthy adults and in patients with certain forms of infertility. This review aims to concisely summarize what is known about kisspeptin as a regulator of reproductive function, and provide an update on recent advances within this field.

Relative Price Dispersion and the Rate of Inflation : The Evidence from Japan

Holly, Sean 세종대학교 국제경제연구소 1997 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.12 No.2

The relationship between inflation and price variability has been of interest to economists for many years. Recently, Ball and Mankiw [1995] have proposed a menu-cost model of price stickiness in which the skewness of relative price inflation matters as well as the standard deviation. In this paper their model is tested on Japanese wholesale price data. The results are mixed. When we use the single equation approach of Ball and Mankiw the results appear to favour their model. However, once we condition inflation on the growth in the money stock and allow for the simultaneity of inflation and relative price variability predicted by a Lucas type misperceptions model, then the effects postulated by Ball and Mankiw largely disappear, while inflation seems to drive both the standard deviation and skewness of relative prices.(JEL Classification: E3, F41)

Three Reforming Regimes? Modernity and the Fiscal State in Modern Korean History

Holly Stephens 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 2019 Seoul journal of Korean studies Vol.32 No.1

This article approaches the challenge of reperiodizing Korean history by considering the place of the nineteenth century within accounts of modern Korea. In recent years, numerous studies have examined various aspects of Korean “modernity.” However, notwithstanding the contributions from such studies, an overemphasis on modernity as a central concept runs the risk of marginalizing significant topics that fall outside of the definition of “modern” life. After exploring recent historiographical trends, this article presents an alternative conception of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that explicitly aims to look beyond the category of “the modern” in order to bridge the historiographical divide of late Chosŏn and colonial Korea. Through a survey of fiscal practices under three different regimes—the late Chosŏn state, the era of the Kabo reforms and the Great Korean Empire, and the colonial period—I examine the evolution of taxation as a measure of the state’s ability to access information and negotiate with competing interests within Korean society. Rather than focusing on an emerging modern rationality, I show how the practices adopted by different regimes appealed to a wide array of norms as each government confronted shared fiscal concerns and sought to cultivate the information and institutions necessary to support itself. Despite some obvious innovations, I also show some continuities that highlight the importance of the nineteenth century in understanding interactions between the population and the government into the twentieth century.

      • Examining the Role of Culture in Shaping Public Expectations of CSR Communication in the United States and China

        ( Holly K. Ott ),( Anli Xiao ) 한국PR학회 2017 AJPR Vol.1 No.1

This study examines the role of culture in shaping publics’ expectations for corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication through survey research in the United States (N = 316) and China (N = 315). Based on Kim and Ferguson’s (2014) investigation of what and how to communicate CSR among U.S. publics, this study aims to further contribute to CSR communication literature by examining public expectations of corporations’ CSR activities in a global context. Furthermore, this study applies Hofstede’s cultural dimensions as adapted by Vitell et al. (2003) to determine how various cultural elements may serve as predictors for why and how publics in both the U.S. and China develop expectations and perceptions of companies’ CSR efforts. Two online surveys were administered through a Qualtrics panel to include a representative sample of general U.S. consumers and general Chinese consumers. The English survey was administered to the U.S. sample, while the Chinese survey (translated and examined by two bilingual researchers) was administered to the sample in China. Questionnaire items measured participants’ expectations of companies’ CSR communication and several cultural dimensions that could potentially impact participants’ expectations of effective CSR communication. Results highlight differences in each public’s expectations of what and how companies should communicate CSR. Specifically, this study found that Chinese consumers seem to place higher importance on CSR communication content (e.g., what to communicate) than U.S. consumers. Also, U.S. consumers prioritized communicating about who is benefitting from a company’s CSR activities while Chinese consumers felt that it was most important to communicate the consistency of the company’s commitment to its CSR initiatives. Both samples felt that message tone was the most important factor when considering how companies should communicate CSR information. Among Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, uncertainty avoidance and masculinity are identified as the strongest predictors for CSR variables, but results regarding what and how publics expect from companies’ CSR communication efforts highlight different items that participants in each country rate as the most important factors to them. Overall, results suggest that the role of culture might be slightly stronger in shaping CSR expectations in China than in the U.S. since there were more predictor variables and stronger coefficients in the Chinese sample than in the U.S. The study broadens theoretical developments in CSR and public relations research and provides insight for public relations practitioners and companies who continue to search for best practices to effectively communicate about social responsibility with key publics on a global level.

Mineral deposition and vascular invasion of hydroxyapatite reinforced collagen scaffolds seeded with human adipose-derived stem cells

        Holly E. Weiss-Bilka,Matthew J. Meagher,Joshua A. Gargac,Glen L. Niebur,Ryan K. Roeder,Diane R. Wagner 한국생체재료학회 2019 생체재료학회지 Vol.23 No.4

Background: Collagen-based scaffolds reinforced with hydroxyapatite (HA) are an attractive choice for bone tissue engineering because their composition mimics that of bone. We previously reported the development of compression-molded collagen-HA scaffolds that exhibited high porosity, interconnected pores, and mechanical properties that were well-suited for surgical handling and fixation. The objective of this study was to investigate these novel collagen-HA scaffolds in combination with human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) as a template for bone formation in a subcutaneous athymic mouse model. Methods: Collagen-HA scaffolds and collagen-only scaffolds were fabricated as previously described, and a clinically approved bone void filler was used as a control for the material. Constructs were seeded with hASCs and were pretreated with either control or osteogenic media. A cell-free group was also included. Scaffolds were implanted subcutaneously in the backs of athymic nude mice for 8 weeks. Mineral depositi on was quantified via microcomputed tomography. Histological and immunofluorescence images of the explants were used to analyze their vascular invasion, remodeling and cellularity. Results: Cell-free collagen-HA scaffolds and those that were pre-seeded with osteogenically differentiated hASCs supported mineral deposition and vascular invasion at comparable rates, while cell-seeded constructs treated with the control medium showed lower mineralization after implantation. HA-reinforcement allowed collagen constructs to maintain their shape, provided improved cell-tissue-scaffold integration, and resulted in a more organized tissue when pre-treated in an osteogenic medium. Scaffold type and pre-treatment also determined osteoclast activity and therefore potential remodeling of the constructs. Conclusions: The results of this study cumulatively indicate that treatment medium and scaffold composition direct mineralization and angiogenic tissue formation in an ectopic model. The data suggest that it may be necessary to match the scaffold with a particular cell type and cell-specific pre-treatment to achieve optimal bone formation.

The Crux of the Spirit of Place in D.H. Lawrence’s Studies in Classic American Literature

        Holly A. Laird 한국로렌스학회 2023 D.H. 로렌스 연구 Vol.31 No.2

“The spirit of place” has become a nearly archetypal trope for Lawrence readers. But it operates as a crux in his writing. Lawrence was often trying to state something unstateable and achieve something unachievable. He produces contradictions―and cruxes―amid numerous repetitions that tend to become self-deconstructing. This essay article’s aim is to examine Lawrence’s concept of “the spirit of place” more closely than critics have previously done, by parsing it in the language of both published versions of the eponymous essay. This is the piece with which Lawrence headed his series of Studies in Classic American Literature, as Chapter One of this collection in both 1918 and 1923―a collection which has risen, over time, to become a classic itself. I look first at Lawrence’s synonyms, characterizations, explanations, and examples for “the spirit of place,” then at when and where he locates it, next at how it works and should work, and finally for whom.
