Purpose: High tibial valgus osteotomy (HTO) is a wellestablished surgical procedure for patients with medial compartment osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The hybrid closedwedge HTO (CWHTO) procedure permits extensive correction in patients with severe deformities or patellofemoral joint OA. The aim of this study was to report the shortterm results in a consecutive series of patients treated with hybrid CWHTO.Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes and radiographic parameters in 29 consecutive knees that underwent hybrid CWTHO to correct medial compartment OA at an average followup of 52.6 months. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Lysholm score and knee scoring system of the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA). The KellgrenLawrence grading system and pre and postoperative mechanical axis (MA), femorotibial angle (FTA), posterior tibial slope, and patella height were assessed. Results: The FTA and MA significantly changed from 180.7° to 170.4° and from 22.0° to 60.2°, respectively. No significant differences were observed between the mean pre and postoperative posterior tibial slope, InsallSalvati ratio, or CatonDeschamps index. The postoperative JOA and Lysholm scores significantly improved from 76.7 to 95.8 and from 58.8 to 90.2, respectively. Conclusions: Satisfactory outcomes can be achieved with hybrid CWHTO in patients with medial OA.

The protein encoded by the activated disease resistance 1-like1 (ADR1-L1) gene (locus name, At4g33300)belongs to the activated disease resistance 1 (ADR1) family of coiled-coil nucleotide-binding site leucine-rich repeat-type disease resistance proteins. This family contains four proteins and they have specific features in their amino acid sequences. It has been reported that ADR1 protein belongs to the ADR1family, which is related to not only defense response but also drought tolerance. We found that transgenic plants overexpressing the ADR1-L1 gene showed a dwarf phenotype and morphological change in leaves. The expression levels of defense-related genes and the resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 were increased in transgenic plants. However, enhancement of drought tolerance and activation of abiotic response genes were not observed. When the growth temperature was changed from 22°C to 28°C, the expression of defense-related genes and the enhancement of resistance to a bacterial pathogen were suppressed and the dwarf phenotype and morphological change of leaves recovered.
Gastric Adenocarcinoma with Thymic Metastasis after Curative Resection: A Case Report

The peritoneum is the most frequent site of recurrence for gastric cancer after gastrectomy, followed by the liver and lymph nodes. In contrast, metastasis to the thymus is rare. Annual surveillance with computed tomography was performed on a 67-year-old man who previously underwent a distal gastrectomy and D2 lymph node dissection for gastric cancer at Tottori University. Five years after the initial operation, an anterior mediastinal tumor was detected by computed tomography. The patient underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery to remove the tumor. Histopathology revealed adenocarcinoma cells similar to those of the gastric cancer resected 5 years previously. Thymic metastasis was considered likely based on the location of the tumor. The recognition that gastric cancer can metastasize to unusual anatomic locations, such as the thymus, can facilitate an accurate, prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Comparative analysis of nucleotide sequences of the genomic region located around 100 map unit of chromosome 1 using two accessions, Columbia (Col) and Landsberg erecta (Ler), of Arabidopsis thaliana was performed. High divergence was detected between them, and the length of the Ler sequence was half of corresponding sequence of Col. This divergence occurred by tandem duplication, deletion of large regions, and insertion of unrelated sequences. These events led to the high polymorphism of plant disease resistant genes, which are located in the analyzed region. It is highly probable that two-round duplication occurred, and the insertion sequences are transposable elements. The data suggest that the analyzed region had been evolving until quite recently.

Edible mushrooms contain an abundance of immune-enhancing nutrients. Some of these compounds, referred to as biological response modifiers (BRMs), have been used in biological therapies for cancer treatment. We obtained a low-molecular-weight protein fraction (MLP-Fraction) from the fruiting body of the maitake mushroom Grifola frondosa by multiple sequential steps, including ethanol precipitation, DEAE-exchange chromatography, and gel filtration. The effect of the MLP-Fraction on the immune system was determined using normal mice. This resulted in a simultaneous increase in splenocyte proliferation and production of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1α, tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-10, IL-12, and interferon (IFN)-γ. The expression levels of IFN-γ and IL-12 in antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and the activation of natural killer (NK) cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells were observed. These results suggest a mechanism in which NK cells are activated through cytokines produced by APCs. We also confirmed the possibility that the MLP-Fraction acts as a BRM using colon-26 carcinoma-bearing mice. This fraction enhanced the production of IL-12 and IFN-γ by splenocytes in tumor-bearing mice and clearly showed an inhibitory effect on tumor cell growth.
