        Assessment of Noise Exposure and Hearing Loss Among Workers in Textile Mill (Thamine), Myanmar: A Cross-Sectional Study

        Background: In a wide range of industries, noise-induced hearing loss remains one of the most prevalent occupational problems. This study aimed to assess the noise exposure level and associated factors of hearing loss among textile workers in Yangon Region, Myanmar. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at a Textile mill (Thamine), Yangon Region, from April to December 2018. In total, 226 workers who were randomly selected from 3 weaving sections participated in face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. A digital sound level meter and pure-tone audiometer were used for the assessment of noise exposure level and hearing loss, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the associated factors of hearing loss. Results: In total workers, 66.4% were exposed to ≥85 dB(A) of noise exposure, and the prevalence of hearing loss was 25.7%. Age ≥35 years, below high school education, hearing difficulty, tinnitus, hypertension, > 9 years of service duration in a textile mill were positively associated with hearing loss. After adjusting confounding factors, age ≥35 years (adjusted odds ratio = 6.90, 95% confidence interval = 3.45-13.82) and tinnitus (adjusted odds ratio = 2.88, 95% confidence interval = 1.13-7.37) were persistently associated with hearing loss. Conclusion: Providing occupational hazard education and enforcement of occupational safety regulations should be taken to decrease the noise exposure level. The regular audiometry test should be conducted for assessment of hearing threshold shift. The employer needs to implement a hearing conservation program in workplace when noise exposure reaches or exceeds 85 dB(A) for 8 hours.

        Deep learning-based automatic segmentation of the mandibular canal on panoramic radiographs: A multi-device study

        Purpose: The objective of this study was to propose a deep-learning model for the detection of the mandibular canal on dental panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: A total of 2,100 panoramic radiographs (PANs) were collected from 3 different machines: RAYSCAN Alpha (n = 700, PAN A), OP-100 (n = 700, PAN B), and CS8100 (n = 700, PAN C). Initially, an oral and maxillofacial radiologist coarsely annotated the mandibular canals. For deep learning analysis, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) utilizing U-Net architecture were employed for automated canal segmentation. Seven independent networks were trained using training sets representing all possible combinations of the 3 groups. These networks were then assessed using a hold-out test dataset. Results: Among the 7 networks evaluated, the network trained with all 3 available groups achieved an average precision of 90.6%, a recall of 87.4%, and a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 88.9%. The 3 networks trained using each of the 3 possible 2-group combinations also demonstrated reliable performance for mandibular canal segmentation, as follows: 1) PAN A and B exhibited a mean DSC of 87.9%, 2) PAN A and C displayed a mean DSC of 87.8%, and 3) PAN B and C demonstrated a mean DSC of 88.4%. Conclusion: This multi-device study indicated that the examined CNN-based deep learning approach can achieve excellent canal segmentation performance, with a DSC exceeding 88%. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of considering the characteristics of panoramic radiographs when developing a robust deep-learning network, rather than depending solely on the size of the dataset.

        Cluster-based Cooperative Data Forwarding with Multi-radio Multi-channel for Multi-flow Wireless Networks

        Cooperative forwarding has shown a substantial network performance improvement compared to traditional routing in multi-hop wireless network. To further enhance the system throughput, especially in the presence of highly congested multiple cross traffic flows, a promising way is to incorporate the multi-radio multi-channel (MRMC) capability into cooperative forwarding. However, it requires to jointly address multiple issues. These include radio-channel assignment, routing metric computation, candidate relay set selection, candidate relay prioritization, data broadcasting over multi-radio multi-channel, and best relay selection using a coordination scheme. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient cluster-based cooperative data forwarding (CCDF) which jointly addresses all these issues. We study the performance impact when the same candidate relay set is being used for multiple cross traffic flows in the network. The network simulation shows that the CCDF with MRMC not only retains the advantage of receiver diversity in cooperative forwarding but also minimizes the interference, which therefore further enhances the system throughput for the network with multiple cross traffic flows.

        Analysis of osteogenic potential on 3mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals and two different niobium oxide containing zirconia ceramics

        PURPOSE. This study was performed to evaluate the osteogenic potential of 3mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP) and niobium oxide containing Y-TZPs with specific ratios, new (Y,Nb)-TZPs, namely YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 discs. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 3Y-TZP, YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 discs (15 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness) were prepared and their average surface roughness (Ra) and surface topography were analyzed using 3-D confocal laser microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mouse pre-osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells were seeded onto all zirconia discs and evaluated with regard to cell attachment and morphology by (CLSM), cell proliferation by PicoGreen assay, and cell differentiation by Reverse-Transcription PCR and Quantitative Real-Time PCR, and alkaline phosphatase (Alp) staining. RESULTS. The cellular morphology of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts was more stretched on a smooth surface than on a rough surface, regardless of the material. Cellular proliferation was higher on smooth surfaces, but there were no significant differences between 3Y-TZP, YN4533, and YN4533/Al20. Osteoblast differentiation patterns on YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 were similar to or slightly higher than seen in 3Y-TZP. Although there were no significant differences in bone marker gene expression (alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin), Alp staining indicated better osteoblast differentiation on YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 compared to 3Y-TZP. CONCLUSION. Based on these results, niobium oxide containing Y-TZPs have comparable osteogenic potential to 3Y-TZP and are expected to be suitable alternative ceramics dental implant materials to titanium for aesthetically important areas.

      • 지하수-습지-지표수 상호작용에 따른 수화학적 특성 연구

        본 연구에서는 전 세계 하나의 종만 존재하는 희귀종 물거미가 서식하고 있는 은대리 물거미서식지 일대에서 지하수-습지-지표수 상호작용에 따른 수화학적(양이온, 음이온, 알칼리도, 산소-수소 동위원소, 라돈) 특성을 분석하였다. 현장조사 지점은 은대리 물거미서식지(습지)를 중심으로 500 m 내외에 위치하고 있는 지하수 4지점, 습지 3지점, 지표수 3지점을 선정하였다. 2021년 5월부터 8월까지 총 4회 현장조사 및 시료채취를 수행하였다. 연구지역의 지하수, 습지 그리고 지표수의 수리화학특성 분석 결과 습지와 가장 근접해 있는 심부 지하수(EDG4)를 제외한 모든 지점이 Ca-HCO₃ 유형에 도시되었으며, EDG4에 경우 Na-HCO₃ 유형에 도시되어 다른 지점과 구분되었다. 산소-수소 동위원소 분석자료는 지하수, 습지 및 지표수의 물 모두 같은 기원인 것으로 보인다. 하지만 지하수와 지표수는 비슷한 동위원소 함량(δ<SUP>18</SUP>O: -8.51~–7.11‰, δD: -57.13~-49.78‰)을 가지고 있어 함께 도시되는 것을 볼 수 있었으나, 습지의 경우 지하수와 지표수에 비해 비교적 무거운 동위원소 함량(δ<SUP>18</SUP>O: -5.88~–2.13‰, δD: -41.76~-27.13‰)을 보이며 확연히 구분된 위치에 도시 되었다. 라돈의 경우 지하수, 습지 및 지표수 모두 조사를 시작한 5월에서부터 6월, 7월 점차적으로 농도가 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 지하수에서 가장 높은 라돈 농도를 보이며, 지표수의 농도가 가장 낮게 측정 되었다. 습지는 지하수와 하천수 사이의 농도 값을 보여 습지가 지하수와 지표수 모두의 영향을 받고 있을 가능성 또한 보여준다. 은대리 물거미서식지는 우리나라 유일하게 멸종위기 물거미가 서식하고 있는 의미있는 지역으로 이 일대 지하수, 습지 그리고 지표수의 수화학적 특성 연구를 통해 물거미 서식 환경에 대한 기초적인 수리생태학적 정보를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

      • MYB transcription factor isolated from <i>Raphanus sativus</i> enhances anthocyanin accumulation in chrysanthemum cultivars

        <P>A MYB transcription factor gene, <I>RsMYB1</I>, from radish was introduced into the chrysanthemum cultivars ‘Peach ND’, ‘Peach Red’, and ‘Vivid Scarlet’ under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter. Presence of <I>RsMYB1</I> in transgenic lines was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results of reverse-transcription-PCR analysis revealed that the expression of <I>RsMYB1</I> was stable in all transgenic lines and could enhance the expression levels of three key biosynthetic genes (<I>F3H</I>, <I>DFR</I>, and <I>ANS</I>) involved in anthocyanin production. Accordingly, anthocyanin content was significantly higher in transgenic lines than in control of all the cultivars, although the increasement was not visually observed in any of the transgenic lines. Therefore, these results demonstrate that <I>RsMYB1</I> has potential to enhance anthocyanin content in the chrysanthemums.</P>

      • Effects of Panax notoginseng, ginsenoside Rb1, and notoginsenoside R1 on proliferation of human breast carcinoma MCF-7 cells

        In this study, we evaluated the antiproliferative effects of Panax notoginseng, ginsenoside Rb1, and notoginsenoside R1 in the human breast carcinoma MCF-7 cell line. Our results indicated that both Panax notoginseng radix extract (NRE) and Panax notoginseng rhizoma extract (NRhE) possess significant antiproliferative activities in MCF-7 cells. Compared to control group (100%), at the concentrations of 0.05, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/ml NRE, cell growth was concentration-dependently reduced to 81.0 ${\pm}$ 6.1 (P < 0.01), 34.2 ${\pm}$ 4.8 (P < 0.001), and 19.3 ${\pm}$ 1.9 (P < 0.001), respectively. Similar results with NRhE at concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/ml were obtained in these MCF-7 cells. To identify the responsible chemical constituent, we tested the antiproliferation effects of two representative saponins, ginsenoside Rb1 and notoginsenoside R1, on the MCF-7 cells. The data showed that ginsenoside Rb1 was endowed with antiproliferative properties, while notoginsenoside R1 did not have an inhibitory effect in the concentrations tested. Our studies provided evidence that Panax notoginseng extracts and ginsenoside Rb1 may be beneficial, as adjuvants, in the treatment of human breast carcinoma.
