Removal of Limonin Bitterness by Treatment of Ion Exchange and Adsorbent Resins

        Osman Kola,Cemal Kaya,Ali Altan,Hüseyin Duran 한국식품과학회 2010 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.19 No.2

This study, the selective removal of limonin bitterness from Washington navel orange juice by batch adsorption to the Amberlite XAD-16HP and Dowex Optipore L285 was investigated and the determination of some compositional changes that occurred with orange juices debittering using adsorption resins were the primary focus. Amberlite XAD-16HP and Dowex Optipore L285have been successfully used to reduce bitterness to acceptable levels in Washington navel orange juices. Amberlite XAD-16HP does not have any important negative effects on the quality characteristics of orange juices. However, Dowex Optipore L285 reduces the titratable acidity (TA) in the orange juices and so increases the content of soluble solids contents (SSC), pH value, and ratio accordingly.

Differential Effects of Pentoxifylline on Learning and Memory Impairment Induced by Hypoxic-ischemic Brain Injury in Rats

        Hülya Halis,Soner Bitiktaş,Osman Baştuğ,Burak Tan,Şehrazat Kavraal,Tamer Güneş,Cem Süer 대한정신약물학회 2019 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.17 No.3

Objective: Hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury in the human perinatal period often leads to significant long-term neurobehavioral dysfunction in the cognitive and sensory-motor domains. Using a neonatal HI injury model (unilateral carotid ligation followed by hypoxia) in postnatal day seven rats, the present study investigated the long-term effects of HI and potential behavioral protective effect of pentoxifylline. Methods: Seven-day-old rats underwent right carotid ligation, followed by hypoxia (FiO2 = 0.08). Rats received pentoxifylline immediately after and again 2 hours after hypoxia (two doses, 60‒100 mg/kg/dose), or serum physiologic. Another set of seven-day-old rats was included to sham group exposed to surgical stress but not ligated. These rats were tested for spatial learning and memory on the simple place task in the Morris water maze from postnatal days 77 to 85. Results: HI rats displayed significant tissue loss in the right hippocampus, as well as severe spatial memory deficits. Low-dose treatment with pentoxifylline resulted in significant protection against both HI-induced hippocampus tissue losses and spatial memory impairments. Beneficial effects are, however, negated if pentoxifylline is administered at high dose. Conclusion: These findings indicate that unilateral HI brain injury in a neonatal rodent model is associated with cognitive deficits, and that low dose pentoxifylline treatment is protective against spatial memory impairment

Effect of Preputial Type on Bacterial Colonization and Wound Healing in Boys Undergoing Circumcision

        Hüseyin Tarhan,Ilker Akarken,Osman Koca,Işık Ozgü,Ferruh Zorlu 대한비뇨의학회 2012 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.53 No.6

Purpose: In this study, we evaluated the effect of preputial type on bacterial colonization and wound healing in boys undergoing circumcision. Materials and Methods: This study consisted of 78 boys consecutively admitted to our clinic for circumcision between 2009 and 2011. Preputial status was classified into five types on the basis of preputial retractability. One sterile culture swab was swept circumferentially once around the surface of the glans starting just proximal to the urethral meatus. Three weeks following circumcision, control swabs from the same regions of the same patients were taken and inoculated. Thus, the same patients formed the control group. Patients were evaluated on days 1 and 7 after the operation to assess whether the preputial type affected healing. Results: The mean age of the children was 46.3 months. In our study, the growth rate was 71.8% in pre-circumcision patients, whereas the rate was 10.25% in the post-circumcision group. Types 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 had 100%, 93.8%, 71.4%, 44.4%, and 53.6% colonization, respectively. A significant difference was observed among these types in terms of colonization. The most common agent was Enterococcus species (33%). When postoperative patients were evaluated, all had local swelling and hyperemia on postoperative day 1, whereas there was a significant difference on day 7. Conclusions: There was a significant correlation between preputial type and bacterial colonization, and the preputial type affected post-circumcision wound healing. Practitioners should keep in mind that the healing period will be longer in patients with type 1, 2, and 3 preputium. Mechanical properties of blended cements at elevated temperatures predicted using a fuzzy logic model

        Ahmet Beycioğlu,Adil Gültekin,Hüseyin Yilmaz Aruntaş,Osman Gencel,Magdalena Dobiszewska,Witold Brostow 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2017 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.20 No.2

This study aimed to develop a Rule Based Mamdani Type Fuzzy Logic (RBMFL) model to predict the flexural strengths and compressive strengths of blended cements under elevated temperatures. Clinoptilolite was used as cement substitution material in the experimental stage. Substitution ratios in the cement mortar mix designs were selected as 0% (reference), 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. The data used in the modeling process were obtained experimentally, after mortar specimens having reached the age of 90 days and exposed to 300C, 400C, 500C temperatures for 3 hours. In the RBMFL model, temperature (C) and substitution ratio of clinoptilolite (%) were inputs while the compressive strengths and flexural strengths of mortars were outputs. Results were compared by using some statistical methods. Statistical comparison results showed that rule based Mamdani type fuzzy logic can be an alternative approach for the evaluation of the mechanical properties of concrete under elevated temperature.

Can tumor recurrence be reduced with plasma-kinetic vaporization of the area around the tumor in nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer?

        Yüksel Yılmaz,Mehmet Cemal Kahya,Fatma Hüsniye Dilek,Osman Köse,Serkan Özcan,Ertan Can,Yiğit Akın,Batuhan Ergani,Ahmet Selçuk Dindar 대한비뇨의학회 2018 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.59 No.4

Purpose: To investigate the effect on recurrence of vaporization of the tumor surroundings and suspicious areas with a plasma-kinetic (PK) system after transurethral resection (TUR) of nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer. Materials and Methods: The study included 121 patients with a primary superficial bladder tumor who were randomized as those who underwent TUR with the PK system (Group 1, n=62) and those who underwent TUR with the monopolar system (Group 2, n=59). The vaporization procedure was performed by suppressing the cutting option of the PK system for a period, which would accumulate energy sufficient to make swelling-waves on the mucosa very close to the area of the loop to be vaporized. Results: A total of 121 patients who met the study criteria were included for evaluation. Recurrence was determined in 21 patients in Group 1 (33.87%) and in 29 patients in Group 2 (49.15%) (p=0.088). Recurrence was close to the old resection site in 6 of 21 patients in Group 1, and in 13 patients in Group 2 (p=0.028); the difference was statistically significant. No statistically significant difference was determined between the two groups with respect to age, gender, number of tumor foci, rate or range of additional treatments applied, cigarette smoking rate, repeat TUR rate and rate of tumor en- countered in repeat TUR, T-stage, and tumor grade. Conclusions: The effect of vaporization on recurrence by the PK system may seem similar to the effect of standard TUR, the recurrence- lowering effect surrounding nonmuscle invasive bladder cancers is better.

Repair of Pre-cracked Reinforced Concrete (RC) Beams with Openings Strengthened Using FRP Sheets Under Sustained Load

Osman, Bashir H.,Wu, Erjun,Ji, Bohai,Abdulhameed, Suhaib S. Korea Concrete Institute 2017 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.11 No.1

Strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams with openings by using aramid fiber reinforcement polymers (AFRP) on the beams' surfaces offers a useful solution for upgrading concrete structures to carry heavy loads. This paper presents a repairing technique of the AFRP sheets that effectively strengthens RC beams, controls both the failure modes and the stress distribution around the beam chords and enhances the serviceability (deflection produced under working loads be sufficiently small and cracking be controlled) of pre-cracked RC beams with openings. To investigate the possible damage that was caused by the service load and to simulate the structure behavior in the site, a comprehensive experimental study was performed. Two unstrengthened control beams, four beams that were pre-cracked before the application of the AFRP sheets and one beam that was strengthened without pre-cracking were tested. Cracking was first induced, followed by repair using various orientations of AFRP sheets, and then the beams were tested to failure. This load was kept constant during the strengthening process. The results show that both the preexisting damage level and the FRP orientation have a significant effect on strengthening effectiveness and failure mode. All of the strengthened specimens exhibited higher capacities with capacity enhancements ranging from 21.8 to 66.4%, and the crack width reduced by 25.6-82.7% at failure load compared to the control beam. Finally, the authors present a comparison between the experimental results and the predictions using the ACI 440.2R-08 guidelines.

Photoreactivity and Thermogravimetry of Copper(II) Complexes of N-Salicylideneaniline and Its Derivatives

Osman, Ahmed H.,Aly, Aref A.M.,El-Mottaleb, Mohamed Abd,Gouda, Gamal A.H. Korean Chemical Society 2004 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.25 No.1

$Cu^{II}$-complexes of N-salicylideneaniline and its derivatives were not light sensitive in most solvents such as acetonitrile. A photo-decomposition occurred upon irradiation in halocarbon solvents such as $CHCl_3$. It has been suggested that such photoreactivity is attributed to the reactivity of charge-transfer to solvent (CTTS) excited state attained upon irradiation. A mechanism has been proposed to account for the results obtained. The complexes have been thermally analysed in nitrogen and static air using thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG). The thermal degradation of the complexes proceeds in two or three stages. The kinetic parameters obtained from the Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger equations show the kinetic compensation effect.

Synthesis and electrochemical evaluation of cobalt-based ZIF-67 with its potential as direct use electrode materials for supercapacitors

        A.H.A. Rahim,S.R. Majid,Cheng-Kim Sim,S.N.F. Yusuf,Z. Osman 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.100 No.-

Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks containing imidazolate-based linkers were successfully prepared intothree different molar ratios 3:10, 1:1, and 10:3 mmol. The effect of 2-methylimidazole (HmIM)/ Cobalt (II)nitrate hexahydrate (Co(NO3)2 6H2O) molar ratio on the physicochemical characteristics of Co-based ZIF-67 showed that Co-ZIF-R3 has achieved the highest specific capacity of 86 C g 1 at 0.25 A g 1 in 1 M KOH. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) utilising Co-ZIF-R3 as fabricated cell exhibited 32 C g 1 at currentdensity of 0.25 A g 1 within a large working potential of 1.70 V. Furthermore, 87% of its capacity was keptafter 2500 cycles at the reversible current density of 0.50 A g 1 until 1.0 A g 1 revealed its high potentialas electrode material for supercapacitor. This work not only amplified the information of direct use ofMOF as cathode material in supercapacitors, but also the relation of the role of Co/HmIM molar ratio onthe electrode materials with good electrochemical performance.

Shear Behavior of Reinforced Concrete (RC) Beams with Circular Web Openings without Additional Shear Reinforcement

        Bashir H. Osman,Erjun Wu,Bohai Ji,Suhaib S. Abdulhameed 대한토목학회 2017 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.21 No.1

The introduction of an opening into a Reinforced Concrete (RC) beam leads to a reduction to both the beam’s stiffness and its overall structural capacity due to stress concentrations and local cracking around the opening. This paper uses both the experimental and finite element (FE) method to analyze the shear behavior of RC beams with opening. The shear span-to-depth ratios ( ), opening size, and opening location were considered as the main parameters. The beams were divided into three series according to the shear span-to-depth ratios. Three reinforced concrete beams without openings and one beam with openings were tested experimentally under two-point loading. These beams were considered as control beams so as to validate the FE model using ANSYS14.5 software. A total of 31 specimens were analyzed using ANSYS14.5 while considering the above mentioned parameters. Results showed that the openings located in a high shear region (the line connecting the load and support points) led to the early collapse of the beam. In addition, by comparing the experimental results with those of the non-linear FE analysis, it was concluded that both results were in accordance. An analytical equation for predicting the shear strength of RC beams with circular openings was then proposed, and the obtained results later compared with those from FE model. Furthermore, the developed FE models can serve as a numerical platform for performance predictions of RC beams with different web opening geometries.
