Computational fluid analysis of abrasive waterjet cutting head
Mostofa, Golam,Kwak, Yong-Kil,Ahn, Jung-Hwan 대한기계학회 2010 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.24 No.1
Waterjet cutting is an appealing technology for cutting thick materials with zones that must not be affected by heat. This paper presents computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and theoretical analyses to optimize the mixing of components by the multi-phase approach. Water, air, and abrasives are mixed in a mixing chamber. This modeling is used to predict the influence of air and abrasives on the mixing at different distances within the mixing tube. At the same time, particle tracking was conducted to monitor the erosion rate density at the nozzle wall. Results show that nozzle length has an effect on the mixing of water, air, and the abrasives, and that the velocity of the waterjet influences the erosion rate at the nozzle wall. The k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was used for simulation of the abrasive coupled with air. This investigation reveals that the erosion in the nozzle body is higher at the initial zone and that as the length of the nozzle length increases, the volume fraction of air increases accordingly. The entrance of the orifice is affected by a highly pressurized water stream (with minimal particulate matter), which causes chipping at the leading edge. To reduce the turbulence inside the mixing chamber, the use of a vacuum assist could be helpful, but precautions should be taken in order that the abrasives do not escape from the mixing chamber.
Tooling device design for vibration-assisted high speed shaping of PMMA
Md. Golam Mostofa,J. H. Noh,김화영,안중환,D. B. Kang 대한기계학회 2010 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.24 No.8
PMMA optical components that are used as one of the most important parts of high precision equipments and machines are increasingly replacing the glass due to the various advantages of PMMA. Especially in Light Guide Panels, the PMMA sheet that is used in Liquid Crystal Displays plays an important role in scattering the incident light and requires very fine machining as the sheet is directly related to the optical characteristics of the panels. The High Speed End milling and High Speed Shaping processes that are widely adopted and applied to the precise machining of Light Incident Plane still have quality problems, such as cracks, breakages, poor waviness, and straightness. This paper presents the tooling device design for machining a Light Incident Plane through vibration-assisted High Speed Shaping for increasing the optical quality by minimizing the above-mentioned problems. The cutting tool and the tool post presented in this paper are designed by the authors to increase the magnitude of the cutting stroke by adopting the resonant frequency without weakening the stiffness and to reduce vibrations during even high speed feeding. The dynamic characteristics of the cutting tool and the tool post are evaluated through simulation and experiment as well. The results reveal very appropriate dynamic characteristics for vibration-assisted High Speed Shaping.
Pullout resistance of concrete anchor block embedded in cohesionless soil
Khan, Abdul J.,Mostofa, Golam,Jadid, Rowshon Techno-Press 2017 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.12 No.4
The anchor block is a specially designed concrete member intended to withstand pullout or thrust forces from backfill material of an internally stabilized anchored earth retaining wall by passive resistance of soil in front of the block. This study presents small-scale laboratory experimental works to investigate the pullout capacity of a concrete anchor block embedded in air dry sand and located at different distances from yielding boundary wall. The experimental setup consists of a large tank made of fiberglass sheets and steel framing system. A series of tests was carried out in the tank to investigate the load-displacement behavior of anchor block. Experimental results are then compared with the theoretical approaches suggested by different researchers and codes. The appropriate placement of an anchor block and the passive resistance coefficient, which is multiplied by the passive resistance in front of the anchor block to obtain the pullout capacity of the anchor, were also studied.
