In 2010 Highway Capacity Manual, one preferably determines free-flow speed by deriving it from a speed study involving the existing facility or on a comparable facility if the facility is in the planning stage. Many have used a ‘rule of thumb’ by adding 10 km/ h (5 mi/h) above the posted limit to obtain free-flow speed without justification. Two team members using a radar gun and manual tally sheets collected 1668 speed observations at ten sites during several weeks. Each site had a unique posted speed limit sign ranging from 30 km/h (20 mi/h) to 120 km/h (75 mi/h). Five sites were on urban streets. Three sites were on multilane highways, and two on freeways. Goodness-of-fit test results revealed that a Gaussian distribution generally fit the speed distributions at each site at a 5% level of significance. The best-fit model had a correlation coefficient of +0.99. The posted speed limit variable was significant at 5% level of significance. Examining data by highway type revealed that average free-flow speeds are strongly associated with posted speed limits with correlation coefficients of +0.99, +1.00, and +1.00 for urban streets, multilane highways, and freeways, respectively.

Pristine and annealed multi-walled C nanotubes are preliminarily tested as catalysts towards the degradation of p-coumaric acid with better performances than the widely used activated carbon. In order to clarify the origin of their different catalytic efficiency, the samples are analysed by means of highresolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoemission, reflection electron energy loss and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Chemical composition, mass density, bonding configurations and threefoldto fourfold-coordinated carbon bonding ratios are determined. The comparative discussion of the results obtained leads to attribute the higher catalytic activity of the pristine nanotubes to their larger sp2/sp3carbon bonding fraction and greater amount of oxygen containing functional groups
Structural and optical properties of pulsed laser deposited ZnO thin films

Nanocrystalline ZnO thin films were grown by means of pulsed laser deposition. The ablation process was carried out at relatively low background oxygen gas pressure (10 Pa) and by varying the substrate temperature up to 600 C. Information on the structural and morphological properties of the deposited thin films have been obtained by means of X-ray photoelectron, Raman spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results showed that all the deposited films are substoichiometric in oxygen and with a hexagonal wurtzite crystalline structure, characterized by features of some tens of nanometers in size. An improvement of the films’ crystalline quality was observed for the deposition temperature of 300 ℃ while the further increase of the deposition temperature up to 600℃ induces a worsening of the material’s structural properties with the development of a large amount of nanoparticle’s clusters. The analysis of the XRD patterns shows a growth crystallographic preferential direction as a function of the deposition temperature, in agreement with the appearance of the only E2 optical phonon mode in the Raman spectra. Such findings are compatible with the changes observed in the photoluminescent (PL) optical response and was related to the modification of the ZnO thin film structural quality.

Purpose: To assess the effects of buccal mucosal graft site non-closure versus closure on postoperative oral morbidity for male undergoing augmentation urethroplasty for urethral stricture. Materials and Methods: We included randomized controlled trials. Inclusion criteria were male over the age of 18 with urethral stricture disease requiring reconstruction with buccal mucosal graft harvest. Primary outcomes of the review were postoperative oral pain, need for secondary oral procedures and cosmetic defects. Results: We included 5 studies with 346 randomized patients with urethral strictures, of whom 260 completed the trials. In terms of primary outcomes, non-closure graft site may reduce oral pain on postoperative day #1 (standard mean difference [SMD] 0.24 lower; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.61 lower to 0.12 higher; low certainty evidence [CoE]) but we are uncertain how this impacts pain on postoperative days 3 to 6 (SMD 0.35; 95% CI 0.12 to 0.81 higher; very low CoE). We are also very uncertain as to how it affects the need for secondary oral procedures (risk ratio [RR] 0.22; 95% CI 0.01 to 4.28; very low CoE). Non-closure may increase the risk of cosmetic defects (RR 2.40; 95% CI 0.93 to 6.22; low CoE). Conclusions: This review describes the trade-off for buccal mucosal graft site non-closure versus closure for various patientimportant outcomes; decision-making will likely hinge on the relative value individual patients and surgeons place on them. The supporting evidence was rated as low and very low, thereby signaling substantial underlying uncertainty and the need for better trials.
THE AzTEC/SMA INTERFEROMETRIC IMAGING SURVEY OF SUBMILLIMETER-SELECTED HIGH-REDSHIFT GALAXIES

<P>We present results from a continuing interferometric survey of high-redshift submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with the Submillimeter Array, including high-resolution (beam size similar to 2 arcsec) imaging of eight additional AzTEC 1.1 mm selected sources in the COSMOS field, for which we obtain six reliable (peak signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) > 5 or peak S/N > 4 with multiwavelength counterparts within the beam) and two moderate significance (peak S/N > 4) detections. When combined with previous detections, this yields an unbiased sample of millimeter-selected SMGs with complete interferometric follow up. With this sample in hand, we (1) empirically confirm the radio-submillimeter association, (2) examine the submillimeter morphology-including the nature of SMGs with multiple radio counterparts and constraints on the physical scale of the far infrared-of the sample, and (3) find additional evidence for a population of extremely luminous, radio-dim SMGs that peaks at higher redshift than previous, radio-selected samples. In particular, the presence of such a population of high-redshift sources has important consequences for models of galaxy formation-which struggle to account for such objects even under liberal assumptions-and dust production models given the limited time since the big bang.</P>

Objectives: Lifting heavy weights involves the Valsalva manoeuvre, which leads to intraocular pressure spikes. We used data from a case-control study to further investigate the hypothesis that occupational lifting is a risk factor for retinal detachment. Methods: The study population included 48 cases (patients operated for retinal detachment) and 84 controls (outpatients attending an eye clinic). The odds ratios (OR) of idiopathic retinal detachment were estimated with a logistic regression model (adjusted for age, sex and body mass index). Three indexes were used to examine exposure to lifting; 1) maximum load lifted, 2) average weekly lifting, 3) lifelong cumulative lifting. Results: For all indexes, the most exposed subjects showed an increased risk of retinal detachment compared with the unexposed (index 1: OR 3.57, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.21-10.48; index 2: OR 3.24, 95% CI 1.32-7.97; index 3: OR 2.23, 95% CI 1.27-8.74) and dose-response relationships were apparent. Conclusion: These results reinforce the hypothesis that heavy occupational lifting may be a relevant risk factor for retinal detachment.
The effects of low-level laser therapy in patients with wrist pain: is this Mickey Mouse science?

Objective: Low level laser treatment (LLLT) is widely used in physical therapy practice. It is combined with physical therapy or LLLT alone. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of LLLT on patients' perception of general wrist pain. Design: Longitudinal study. Methods: Forty-eight subjects with wrist pain who were in the age range of 18-70 years old were examined. The subjects were asked, via an interview and a visual analog scale, to grade their wrist pain. They were asked to rotate their wrists through full range of motion and the angle at which any pain occurred was assessed. Each subject was then exposed to one of the following: 1) treatment with an infrared laser with the power turned off (placebo), 2) treatment with an infrared therapeutic laser, 3) treatment with a red therapeutic laser, 4) treatment with an ultraviolet laser, 5) treatment with a blue laser, 6) treatment with a Mickey Mouse flashlight. The duration of the treatment was 3 sessions in 3 days. Results: The results of the experiments showed that while pain was reduced both immediately after and the next day after laser therapy (p<0.05), there was no significant difference between the laser groups and the placebo group. However, the Mickey Mouse flashlight treatment groups had a greater range of motion than the laser groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: While pain was reduced in all laser groups, it was probably a placebo effect. The Mickey Mouse flashlight group probably received benefit from the heat of the flashlight.
