Recognizing the Two Faces of Gambling: The Lived Experiences of Korean Women Gamblers

김성재,김욱수,Suzanne S. Dickerson 한국간호과학회 2016 Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Vol.46 No.5

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of women problem gamblers, focusing on the meaning of gambling to them, how and why these women continue to gamble or stop gambling, and their needs and concerns. In order to effectively help women problem gamblers, practical in-depth knowledge is necessary to develop intervention programs for prevention, treatment, and recovery among women problem gamblers. Methods: The hermeneutic phenomenology approach was used to guide in-depth interviews and team interpretation of data. Sixteen women gamblers who chose to live in the casino area were recruited through snowball sampling with help from a counseling center. Participants were individually interviewed from February to April 2013 and asked to tell their stories of gambling. Transcribed interviews provided data for interpretive analysis. Results: In the study analysis one constitutive pattern was identified: moving beyond addiction by recognizing the two faces of gambling in their life. Four related themes emerged in the analysis-gambling as alluring; gambling as ‘ugly’; living in contradictions; and moving beyond. Conclusion: Loneliness and isolation play a critical role in gambling experiences of women gamblers in Korea. In other words, they are motivated to gamble in order to escape from loneliness, to stop gambling for fear of being lonely as they get older, and to stay in the casnio area so as not to be alone. The need for acceptance is one fo the important factors that should be considered in developing intervention program for women.

Attituds, Subjective Norms and Behavioral Intentions toward Purchasing Imported Casual Clothing

        Park, Hye-Jung,Dickerson, Kitty G. 한국의류학회 2002 한국의류학회지 Vol.26 No.12

      • Application of a symbolic motion structure representation algorithm to identify upper extremity kinematic changes during a repetitive task

Whittaker, Rachel L.,Park, Woojin,Dickerson, Clark R. Elsevier 2018 Journal of biomechanics Vol.72 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Efficient and holistic identification of fatigue-induced movement strategies can be limited by large between-subject variability in descriptors of joint angle data. One promising alternative to traditional, or computationally intensive methods is the symbolic motion structure representation algorithm (SMSR), which identifies the basic spatial-temporal structure of joint angle data using string descriptors of temporal joint angle trajectories. This study attempted to use the SMSR to identify changes in upper extremity time series joint angle data during a repetitive goal directed task causing muscle fatigue. Twenty-eight participants (15 M, 13 F) performed a seated repetitive task until fatigued. Upper extremity joint angles were extracted from motion capture for representative task cycles. SMSRs, averages and ranges of several joint angles were compared at the start and end of the repetitive task to identify kinematic changes with fatigue. At the group level, significant increases in the range of all joint angle data existed with large between-subject variability that posed a challenge to the interpretation of these fatigue-related changes. However, changes in the SMSRs across participants effectively summarized the adoption of adaptive movement strategies. This establishes SMSR as a viable, logical, and sensitive method of fatigue identification via kinematic changes, with novel application and pragmatism for visual assessment of fatigue development.</P>

      • Plasticity in the nanoscale Cu/Nb single-crystal multilayers as revealed by synchrotron Laue x-ray microdiffraction

        Budiman, Arief Suriadi,Han, Seung-Min,Li, Nan,Wei, Qiang-Min,Dickerson, Patricia,Tamura, Nobumichi,Kunz, Martin,Misra, Amit Cambridge University Press (Materials Research Soc 2012 Journal of materials research Vol.27 No.3

<▼1><B>Abstract</B><P/></▼1><▼2><P>There is much interest in the recent years in the nanoscale metallic multilayered composite materials due to their unusual mechanical properties, such as very high flow strength and stable plastic flow to large strains. These unique mechanical properties have been proposed to result from the interface-dominated plasticity mechanisms in nanoscale composite materials. Studying how the dislocation configurations and densities evolve during deformation will be crucial in understanding the yield, work hardening, and recovery mechanisms in the nanolayered materials. In an effort to shed light on these topics, uniaxial compression experiments on nanoscale Cu/Nb single-crystal multilayer pillars using ex situ synchrotron-based Laue x-ray microdiffraction technique were conducted. Using this approach, we studied the nanoscale Cu/Nb multilayer pillars before and after uniaxial compression to about 14% of plastic strain and found significant Laue peak broadening in the Cu phase, which indicates storage of statistically stored dislocations, while no significant Laue peak broadening was observed in the Nb phase in the nanoscale multilayers. These observations suggest that at 14% plastic strain of the nanolayered pillars, the deformation was dominated by plasticity in the Cu nanolayers and elasticity or possibly a zero net plasticity (due to the possibility of annihilation of interface dislocations) in the Nb nanolayers.</P></▼2>

      • Hydrogenated TiO2@reduced graphene oxide sandwich-like nanosheets for high voltage supercapacitor applications

        Pham, Viet Hung,Nguyen-Phan, Thuy-Duong,Tong, Xiao,Rajagopalan, Balasubramaniyan,Chung, Jin Suk,Dickerson, James H. Elsevier 2018 Carbon Vol.126 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Hydrogenated TiO2 has recently attracted considerable attention as potential electrode materials for supercapacitors due to its abundance, low cost, high conductivity, remarkable rate capability, and outstanding long-term cycling stability. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of hydrogenated TiO2 nanoparticles anchored on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (HTG) in the form of sandwich-like nanosheet composites. Further, we explored their implementation as electrode materials for high voltage, symmetric supercapacitors, operating in the voltage window of 0–1.8 V. The HTGs were prepared by a sol-gel method, followed by hydrogenation in the temperature range 300–500 °C. Of the prepared composites, HTG prepared at 400 °C exhibited the largest specific capacitance of 51 F g−1 at the current density of 1.0 A g−1 and excellent rate capability with 82.5% capacitance retention as the current density increased 40-fold, from 0.5 to 20.0 A g−1. HTG's excellent rate capability was attributed to its sandwich-like nanostructure, in which ultrasmall hydrogenated TiO2 nanoparticles densely anchored onto both surfaces of the two-dimensional reduced graphene oxide sheets. Moreover, HTG-based supercapacitors also exhibited long-term cycling stability with the retention over 80% of its initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles. These properties suggest that HTG is a promising electrode material for the scalable manufacture of high-performance supercapacitors.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>Hydrogenated TiO2 has recently attracted considerable attention as potential electrode materials for supercapacitors due to its abundance, low cost, high conductivity, remarkable rate capability, and outstanding long-term cycling stability.
