The Effect of BTX Compounds on the Biodegradation of ETBE by an ETBE Degrading Bacterial Consortium
Vijayalakshmi Gunasekaran,Luke Stam,Magda Constantí 한국생물공학회 2013 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.18 No.6
Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) is a fuel oxygenatethat is commonly used in Europe to achieve completecombustion of automobile fuels and to control air pollution. It is potentially toxic and can enter the human system viacontaminated water bodies. In the present study, we haveidentified an enriched bacterial consortium from a gasolinecontaminatedsite that can degrade ETBE. Bacterialconsortium A was able to degrade 47% of the added ETBEin 4 days and it continued to degrade up to 51% in 9 days. Consortium A consisted of Xanthomonas sp., Methylibiumsp., Methylobacillus sp., and Methylovorus sp. which wereidentified as the participating bacteria during ETBEdegradation by DGGE - 16S rDNA analysis. In addition toETBE, this consortium degraded benzene, toluene andxylene isomers (BTX) when they were present as the solecarbon source. The degradation efficiency increasedpredominantly when ETBE was included as an additionalcarbon source. Interestingly, the degradation of ETBEdecreased to 14% in 9 days when present with BTXcompounds. We report that ETBE degradation is sloweddown or inhibited when BTX compounds are present. Thisis a crucial observation for ETBE degradation in the naturalenvironment.

This paper reports on the effect of nanometer-scale photonic crystal structures on the enhancement of the light extraction in GaN light-emitting diodes. Photonic crystals with hole or pillar-patterned structures with lattice constants of 460, 600, 750, and 920 nm are fabricated on indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) electrodes and/or p-GaN layers using laser holography and reactive ion etching. It is found that the light extraction efficiency depends strongly on the distance between the photonic crystal and the active layer, as well as the lattice constant for both structures. Photonic crystal light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a lattice constant of 750 nm and hole depths of 260 nm in the ITO layer show an increase in light extraction of up to 32%, compared to conventional LEDs, without degradation in the electrical properties while a maximum enhancement of 26% is obtained from the device with a lattice constant of 460 nm and pillar heights of 60 nm on the p-GaN layer. The dependence of the extraction efficiency on the lattice constant is also calculated using a 3-D finite-difference time-domain method and compared with experimental results.

Trade Policy and African Participation in Global Value Chains: Does Trade Facilitation Matter?
Moukaila Mouzamilou Takpara(Moukaila Mouzamilou Takpara ),Constant Fouopi Djiogap(Constant Fouopi Djiogap ),Bouraïma Sawadogo(Bouraïma Sawadogo ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2023 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.38 No.1
This study offers an empirical appraisal of the contribution of trade facilitation for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries participation in global value chains. We used new value-added data on a panel of 25 countries over the period 2004-2017. The results using pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and instrumental variable-two-stage least squares (IV-2SLS) estimators reveal that trade facilitation indicators such as physical infrastructure, information and communication technology, and border and transport efficiency support SSA countries' participation in global value chains. More interestingly, these results are robust at the sectoral level, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and textiles & clothing sectors for physical infrastructure and ICT, while the business environment is conducive to upstream integration of GVCs in the agriculture and textiles & clothing sectors. These results underscore the increased importance of trade facilitation in the era of global value chains and call for well-targeted sectoral policies to reap the benefits of GVCs.

We report the enhanced light extraction of a square lattice photonic crystal GaN LED with a lattice constant of 460 nm and holes with a depth of 500 nm drilled through InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) using laser holography and inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching. In spite of the etching through the MQWs leading to undesirable surface recombination, the photonic crystal LEDs exhibited 1.37 times higher light extraction than that of the LEDs without photonic crystals at 20 mA. Theoretical studies using the 3-dimensional finite-difference time domain method show that the increase of the extraction efficiency with increasing etch depth is due to the increase of the density of the leaky modes into the air.

Uses of First and Foreign Languages as Learning Resources in a Foreign Language Classroom
최태희,Constant Leung 아시아테플 2018 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.14 No.4
In South Korea, many senior high school English teachers consider Korean as a helpful medium of instruction for their subject, although many also feel that they need to develop students’ practical command of spoken English, and, therefore, they also see the need to use English as a medium for teaching. This article provides an account of an exploratory study of how Korean, the students’ first language (L1), and English, a foreign language (L2), are used as communication and pedagogic resources in English lessons taught by an experienced teacher. We will focus on the ways in which the two languages are used to manage classroom interactions and to facilitate teaching and learning activities. Drawing on concepts and analytic frameworks from the fields of formative assessment, code-switching/translanguaging and classroom discourse analysis, this paper aims at making a contribution to the renewed debate on the use of L1 in L2 learning and teaching.
Assessment of GOCI Radiometric Products using MERIS, MODIS and Field Measurements
Nicolas Lamquin,Constant Mazeran,David Doxaran,류주형,박영제 한국해양과학기술원 2012 Ocean science journal Vol.47 No.3
The first Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) launched by South Korea in June 2010 constitutes a major breakthrough in marine optics remote-sensing for its capabilities to observe the diurnal cycles of the ocean. The light signal recorded at eight wavelengths by the sensor allows, after correction for Solar illumination and atmospheric effects, the retrieval of coloured biogeochemical products such as the chlorophyll, suspended sediment and coloured dissolved organic matter concentrations every hour between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm local time around the Korean peninsula. However operational exploitation of the mission needs beforehand a sound validation of first the radiometric calibration, i.e. inspection of the top-of-atmosphere reflectance, and second atmospheric corrections for retrieval of the water-leaving reflectance at sea surface. This study constitutes a contribution to the quality assessment of the GOCI radiometric products generated by the Korea Ocean Satellite Center (KOSC) through comparison with concurrent data from the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS, NASA) and MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS, ESA) sensors as well as in situ measurements. These comparisons are made with spatially and temporally collocated data. We focus on Rayleigh-corrected reflectance (ρRC) and normalized remote-sensing marine reflectance (nRrs). Although GOCI compares reasonably well with MERIS and MODIS, what demonstrates the success of Ocean Colour in geostationary orbit, we show that the current GOCI atmospheric correction systematically masks out data over very turbid waters and needs further examination and correction for future release of the GOCI products.

The present large eddy simulation (LES) study focuses on the case of developing flow within wide channels containing at the bottom wall an array of 2D dunes (2a/h=0.25, l/h=3.75, / is the wavelength, 2a is the dune height, h is the mean channel depth) of closer shape to the ones observed in natural streams. For the case of an incoming steady flow, the instantaneous flow fields are characterized by the formation of arrays of highly-organized hairpin vortices whose dimensions scale with the dune height. LES shows that for shallow channels (2a/h>0.25), the large-scale hairpins and the streaks penetrate regularly up to the free surface, thus affecting mass transport and mixing over the whole water column. LES shows that the hairpin eddies play the primary role in the formation of the streaks of high and low momentum over the region containing dunes. The presence of resolved turbulence in the incoming flow reduces the streamwise distance needed for the streaks to develop over the rough bed region, but does not affect qualitatively the transition process toward the fully developed flow regime, nor the spacing of the streaks in the fully-developed flow region.
