Cerebellar vermis atrophy로 인한 Spinocerebellar Ataxia환자(患者) 치험(治驗) 1례(例) 보고(報告)

Objective: In 1983 Autosomal dominent spinocerebellar ataxia(ADCA) has been classified to four types by a useful clinical features according to Harding. Since 1993 ADCA referred to as SCA by molecular genetic characteristics. We focused on the improvement of clinical symptoms in SCA patient through oriental medical treatment. Methods & Results: The assessment included neurophysiological examination and clinical symptoms. For example slow saccade, gaze limitation, upward and lateral, nystagmus, truncal and gait ataxia. The patient(M/30) was clinically charaterized by ocular abnormalities, trunkal and gait ataxia and the MRI showed atrophy of cerebellar vermis. The patient was taken both common acupuncture and Dong-Si venepuncture on Hwasan with herbal medicine. Before the treatment Rt. ocular movement were slowed and a significant eye fixation was observed always in abduction and intermittently presented trunkal and gait ataxia. During the treatment trunkal and gait ataxia has not been presented and ocular obnomalities changed to normal state. This case suggests the possibility of oriental medical treatment on SCA but further observation is needed on this patient.

Backgrounds: It has been investigated about ageing theory. However, ageing mechanism still remains to be unknown. Since Harman proposes that ageing and ageing related diseases might be due to oxidative damage and these are modifiable by genetic and environmental factors. For designing an optimal nutritional countermeasure against ageing and ageing related disease, it is necessary to understand the ageing mechanism and other reactive species. Objectives: Schizandra Chinesis has been clinically used to treat brain disease, respiratory or inflammatory disease etc. in Oriental medicine. The purpose of this study is to investigate the scavenging effect of Schizandrae Fructus herbal-acupuncture solution(SFHA) on NO, DPPH and IL-4. Results: The results are summarized as follows; ① There is a significant scavenging effect of SFHA on NO in 0.1, 1, 10㎎/㎖group after 24hrs. ② There is a significant scavenging effect of SFHA on DPPH in 1, 10㎍/㎖group. ③ There is a significant inhibitory effect of SFHA on IL-4 in 1, 10, 100㎍/㎖group. Conclusions: These findings indicate that SFHA can be used as antioxidant or antiimflammatory drug. But further study is needed about the effect of SFHA.

Lately, the autumn cropping areas of potato have been steadily increased to supply fresh potatoes all year round in Korea. Although "Dejima" is a main cultivar for autumn cropping, it is very susceptible to common scab (Streptomyces scabies) and show high frequency of physiological disorders such as knobs and cracking on tubers. "Chudong" was bred in 2002 for fresh table use from a cross between H83520-3 with short tuber dormancy and "Superior" with common scab resistance. It has attractive, round tuber shape with white skin and flesh colors. Its tuber dormant periods is 5 days longer than 65 days of "Dejima". Its average yields were 32.4 and 21.8 ton/ha at 90 days after planting in spring and autumn cropping of regional yield trials, respectively. It is more resistant to common scab and potato leaf roll virus and less susceptible to late blight (Phythophthora infestans) compared to "Dejima". However, it is susceptible to potato virus Y.

"Chugang" as a new double cropping potato variety for table use was bred in 2003 from a cross between H83005-2 with short dormancy and "Superior" with common scab resistance. It had been evaluated for short dormancy, growth adaptability and tuber characteristics every twice a year from 1990 to 1999. Regional yield trials had been performed from 2000 to 2002 at three locations, Jeju, Namhae and Gangneung of Korea, respectively. It has round oblong tuber shape with yellow skin and white flesh color. Its tuber dormant periods is approximately 50~60 days. It showed less physiological disorders such as cracking or knobs, and more tolerant to environmental stresses such as plant death by flooding and damages by frost or severe wind compared to "Dejima". Average yields of "Chugang" are 34.6 and 31.1 ton/ha at 90 days after planting in spring and autumn cropping, respectively. It is more resistant to common scab and less susceptible to late blight (phythophthora infestans) compared to "Dejima". However, it is susceptible to potato virus Y (PVY) and andean mosaic virus (AMV).
