Dimethylsulfoxide-soluble Smoking Particles and Nicotine Affect Vascular Contractibility

The aim is to study the effect of dimethylsulfoxide-soluble smoking particles (DSP) and nicotine on the contractility of rat mesenteric artery. The superior mesenteric artery segments were cultured with DSP or nicotine for 24 h. The vascular contractibility was recorded with myograph system. DSP 0.4 mL/L and nicotine 0.48 and 0.96 mg/L shifted the concentrationcontractile curves induced by sarafotoxin 6c, a selective agonist for ETB receptor toward the left with increased Emax. DSP 0.4 mL/L and nicotine 0.96 mg/L shifted ETA receptor-mediated the concentration-contractile curves toward the left with increased Emax. However, nicotine 0.06 mg/L which is the equivalent concentration of nicotine in DSP 0.4 mL/L did not affect the curves and the Emax mediated with ETA receptor and ETB receptor. DSP 0.2 and 0.4 mL/L shifted the concentration-contractile curves induced by noradrenaline toward the right with decreased Emax. Neither did nicotine 0.06 and 0.96 mg/L. Both DSP and nicotine shifted the concentration-contractile curves induced by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) toward the right parallely. DSP changed the phenotypes towards an increased efficacy of ETA receptor and ETB receptor, and a reduced efficacy of 5-HT receptor and α-adrenocceptor. The effects of DSP on ETB receptor, ETA receptor and α-adrenocceptor were independent of nicotine. The effect on 5-HT receptor was responsible to nicotine.

서울대학교병원 산부인과에서 1988년 7월부터 1990년 4월까지 13명의 불임환자를 대상으로 단순 호르몬대체요법을 이용한 난자공여 프로그램을 15주기 시행한 결과 6명의 환자에서 임신이 성립되었다. 난자공여 프로그램은 난자공여를 필요로 하는 불임환자의 치료에 있어서 효과적이고 실용적인 치료방법이 될 수 있으며, 배아의 착상기전, 임신 초기의 내분비학적 변화 등에 관한 중요한 지식을 제공할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. It has been well recognized that both the synchronization of luteinizing hormone(LH) surge between the donor and the recipient for normally cycling women and the complex steroid replacement regimen given on a sequential and incremental basis for women with primary or secondary ovarian failure are two important aspects in oocyte donation. In oocyte donation program at our center, a simplified hormonal regimen applicable both to normally cycling women and to those with ovarian failure which consisted of administering 2 mg estradiol(E₂) valerate orally three times daily augmented with 100 mg progesterone(P) in oil intramuscularly daily starting on the day preceding the oocyte retrieval from the donor was utilized. From July 1988 to April 1990, 15 cycles of oocyte donation program in 13 infertile patients were undertaken and 6 patients succeeded in pregnancy with the pregnancy rate of 46.2% per patient and 40.0% per cycle.

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) has been accepted as a heart protection phenomenon against ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury. The activation of ATP-sensitive potassium $(K_{ATP})$ channels and the release of myocardial nitric oxide (NO) induced by IPC were demonstrated as the triggers or mediators of IPC. A common action mechanism of NO is a direct or indirect increase in tissue cGMP content. Furthermore, cGMP has also been shown to contribute cardiac protective effect to reduce heart I/R-induced infarction. The present investigation tested the hypothesis that $K_{ATP}$ channels attenuate DNA strand breaks and oxidative damage in an in vitro model of I/R utilizing rat ventricular myocytes. We estimated DNA strand breaks and oxidative damage by mean of single cell gel electrophoresis with endonuclease III cutting sites (comet assay). In the I/R model, the level of DNA damage increased massively. Preconditioning with a single 5-min anoxia, diazoxide $(100\;{\mu}M)$, SNAP $(300\;{\mu}M)$ and 8-(4-Chlorophenylthio)-guanosine-3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (8-pCPT-cGMP) $(100\;{\mu}M)$ followed by 15 min reoxygenation reduced DNA damage level against subsequent 30 min anoxia and 60 min reoxygenation. These protective effects were blocked by the concomitant presence of glibenclamide $(50\;{\mu}M)$, 5-hydroxydecanoate (5-HD) $(100\;{\mu}M)$ and 8-(4-Chlorophenylthio)-guanosine-3',5'-cyclic monophosphate, Rp-isomer (Rp-8-pCPT-cGMP) $(100\;{\mu}M)$. These results suggest that NO-cGMP-protein kinase G (PKG) pathway contributes to cardioprotective effect of $K_{ATP}$ channels in rat ventricular myocytes.

<P>We directly measure the spatially and spectrally resolved gain of erbium doped multicore and few mode fiber amplifiers using a coherent swept wavelength interferometer operated in the reflection mode. It greatly simplifies the characterization of multispatial mode amplifiers because it enables characterization of the mode-dependent gain with only a single mode-selective multiplexer at the input. The gains for both multicore fiber amplifier and three spatial modes (LP<SUB>01</SUB> and <TEX>${\rm{LP}}_{{11}}$</TEX>) amplifier are measured. Measurements for multicore fiber amplifier are conducted using two pump schemes, core pump and cladding pump. Also, the comparison with the cutback experiments shows the validity of this technique.</P>

<P>We demonstrate cladding-pumped six-core Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) using two different pump coupling schemes: edge-coupled and side-coupled pumping, where a single multimode laser diode can be applied to pump all cores. Using two in-line cladding-pumped EDFAs at the input and output of a 31-km coupled-six-core fiber, we realized 465-km space-division multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing transmission in a recirculating loop and achieved a spectral efficiency of 18 bits/s/Hz. Through side-coupled pumping, the cladding-pumped six-core EDFA produced >18-dBm output power per core and had <;6-dB noise figure across the C-band.</P>

Defect, which can occur in the manufacturing process or during operation, in wind turbine blade may have a great influence on its life and stability. Therefore, it may be necessary to detect the damage developed from the defect as early as possible. In this study, the impedance was measured with extension of damage in the blade using PVDF film sensor. Three different components of the blade including leading edge, spar and trailing edge, respectively, were prepared. The damage for the respective blade components was developed with static loading and the impedance were characterized with extension of the damage. Variation of the impedance was measured in the frequency region ranged from 1 ㎒ to 300 ㎒. It was found that the impedance was varied in magnitude and frequency with damage extension under static loading.

For the wind turbine system, the early detection of the damage which can occur during its operation may be essential for effective operation and maintenance of the system. In this study, to detect the damage in the wind blade, characteristics of impedance were investigated through the full-scale structural test of the blade. In order to detect the damage occurrence and development in the blade, PVDF film sensors with dimension of 25 x 20 ㎟ were mounted on the skin of the blade with the electric capacity of 100 kW which was manufactured specially for this test. The damages were generated along the trailing and leading edges, respectively, and developed with increasing load level. Variation of the impedances obtained from the PVDF sensors with increasing damage size was investigated in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 300 MHz through impedance analyzer.
