• Syndecan transmembrane domain modulates intracellular signaling by regulating the oligomeric status of the cytoplasmic domain

        Jang, Bohee,Jung, Hyejung,Hong, Heejeong,Oh, Eok-Soo Elsevier 2018 Cellular signalling Vol.52 No.-

Abstract

Cell surface receptors must specifically recognize an extracellular ligand and then trigger an appropriate response within the cell. Their general structure enables this, as it comprises an extracellular domain that can bind an extracellular ligand, a cytoplasmic domain that can transduce a signal inside the cell to produce an appropriate response, and a transmembrane domain that links the two and is responsible for accurately delivering specific information on a binding event from the extracellular domain to the cytoplasmic domain, to trigger the proper response. A vast body of research has focused on elucidating the specific mechanisms responsible for regulating extracellular binding events and the subsequent interactions of the cytoplasmic domain with intracellular signaling. In contrast, far less work has focused on examining how the transmembrane domain links these domains and delivers the necessary information. In this review, we propose the importance of the transmembrane domain as a signal regulator. We highlight the cell adhesion receptor, syndecan, as a special case, and propose that the transmembrane domain-mediated oligomerization of the syndecan cytoplasmic domain is a unique regulatory mechanism in syndecan signaling.

Composite System of PLCL Scaffold and Heparin-Based Hydrogel for Regeneration of Partial-Thickness Cartilage Defects

        Kim, Mihye,Hong, Bohee,Lee, Jongman,Kim, Se Eun,Kang, Seong Soo,Kim, Young Ha,Tae, Giyoong American Chemical Society 2012 Biomacromolecules Vol.13 No.8

Delivering isolated chondrocytes with matrix is a promising approach to promote the cartilage repair. The present study attempted to combine the advantages of porous scaffold and hydrogel in delivering chondrocytes to partial-thickness cartilage defects. An electrospun, gelatin-incorporated PLCL scaffold mechanically similar to natural cartilage was fabricated, and chondrocytes were seeded using an injectable heparin-based hydrogel for efficient cell seeding. The scaffold/hydrogel composite showed more enhanced expression of chondrogenic genes and production of GAGs than those prepared without hydrogel. In addition, significant cartilage formation showing good integration with surrounding, similar to natural cartilage, was observed by scaffold/hydrogel composite system in partial-thickness defects of rabbit knees while no regeneration was observed in control defects. Although no exogenous chondrogenic factors were added, it was evident that the scaffold/hydrogel composite system was highly effective and better than the scaffold alone system without hydrogel for cartilage regeneration both in vitro and in vivo.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Vol.11 No.9

Citizens of 21st century which is called to be the era of 'Culture' express their cultural desires in their public environments. Governments found that these needs can be satisfied through the culture-centered public designs which are based on the local resources and identities. This research suggests the strategy programming model to support these projects. It aims at not suggesting the conceptual process model, but developing the practical supporting model with options to choose. Thus the indices which are related to each prototype phases of programming process are analyzed through the case analyses with qualitative approach. This paper focused on analyzing the indices for Place Strategy which includes the phases for Resource, Mission, and Targeting. Altogether, 81 indices are analyzed.

Effects of Metal and Metalloid Contamination on Microbial Diversity and Activity in Agricultural Soils

        Sherlyn C. Tipayno,Puneet S. Chauhan,Sungman Woo,Bohee Hong,Keewoong Park,Jongbae Chung,Tongmin Sa 한국토양비료학회 2011 한국토양비료학회지 Vol.44 No.1

The continuous increase in the production of metals and their subsequent release into the environment has lead to increased concentration of these elements in agricultural soils. Because microbes are involved in almost every chemical transformations taking place in the soil, considerable attention has been given to assessing their responses to metal contaminants. Short-term and long-term exposures to toxic metals have been shown to reduce microbial diversity, biomass and activities in the soil. Several studies show that microbial parameters like basal respiration, metabolic quotient, and enzymatic activities, including those of oxidoreductases and those involved in the cycle of C, N, P and other elements, exhibit sensitivity to soil metal concentrations. These have been therefore, regarded as good indices for assessing the impact of metal contaminants to the soil. Metal contamination has also been extensively shown to decrease species diversity and cause shifts in microbial community structure. Biochemical and molecular techniques that are currently being employed to detect these changes are continuously challenged by several limiting factors, although showing some degree of sensitivity and efficiency. Variations and inconsistencies in the responses of bioindicators to metal stress in the soil can also be explained by differences in bioavailability of the metal to the microorganisms. This, in turn, is influenced by soil characteristics such as CEC, pH, soil particles and other factors. Therefore, aside from selecting the appropriate techniques to better understand microbial responses to metals, it is also important to understand the prevalent environmental conditions that interplay to bring about observed changes in any given soil parameter.
