Larvae of the genus Silba Macquart, 1875 were obtained from the syconia of three different species of Ficus growing on the southern islands of Japan and Taiwan. Examination of the emerged adults identified four species, two of which are described as new to science: Silba erecta MacGowan and Arimoto sp. nov. and Silba thunbergii MacGowan and Arimoto sp. nov. Of the four species observed, the larvae of S. erecta, Silba ishigaki MacGowan and Okamoto, 2013 and S. thunbergii feed on the tissue of the fig syconia. Silba inubiwa MacGowan and Okamoto, 2013 was observed as a predator of three fig wasp species. The biogeographic distribution and biological data are provided for each of these fig-associated species.

We presented a revised taxonomy of two allied species, Limoniscus mitokii Kishii, 2004 and L. ogatai (Kishii, 1985), from western Japan. Through this revision, we found a new species, L. spelunca sp. n., from the type series of L. ogatai. The new species is different in its frons, antennae, prosternum, and aedeagus compared with L. mitokii and L. ogatai. We also reviewed the current understanding of Japanese Limoniscus species, and provided a key to the 23 Limoniscus species found in Japan. urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:56104650-EAA9-42E9-AFC3-91D7DCA53938.
DOUBLE PEAKED OUTBURSTS OF THE BLAZAR OJ 287 IN 1994 - 1996
ARIMOTO JUN'ICHI,SADAKANE Kozo,HONDA SATOSHI,TANABE KAZUHITO The Korean Astronomical Society 1996 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.29 No.suppl1
VRI bands CCD photometric observations of the BL Lac object OJ 287 have been carried out during the period from October, 1994 to May, 1996. OJ 287 underwent two major outbursts during our observations. The first peak (V14.0 mag.) occurred in the first half of November, 1994 and faded out to 16.5 mag within 150 days. The second peak (14.0 mag.) was observed in late December, 1995. The latter peak continued at nearly the same brightness until May, 1996. Such a long lasting outburst has never been reported for OJ 287. Color indices (V - R and V-I) remained nearly constant during the outbursts.
Mutation, DNA Strand Cleavage and Nitric Oxide Formation Caused by N-nitrosoproline with UVA & UVB
Arimoto-Kobayashi, Sakae,Ando, Yoshiko,Horai, Yumi,Okamoto, Keinosuke,Hayatsu, Hikoya,Green, Michael H.L. Korean Society of Photoscience 2002 Journal of Photosciences Vol.9 No.3
N-Nitrosoproline(NPRO) is endogenously formed from proline and nitrite. NPRO has been reported to be nonmutagenic and noncarcinogenic. In this study, we have detected the direct mutagenicity of NPRO with UVA and UVB towards S. typhimurium. Formation of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG), a mutagenic lesion, was observed in calf thymus DNA treated with NPRO plus simulated sunlight. Furthermore, the treatment with NPRO and sunlight induced single strand breaks in the superhelical replicative form of phage M13mp2 DNA. An analysis using scavengers suggested that both reactive oxygen species and NO radical mediate the strand breaks. The formation of nitric oxide was observed in NPRO solution irradiated with UVA. The co-mutagenic and co-toxic actions of NPRO and sunlight merit attention as possible mechanisms increasing the carcinogenic risk from UVA irradiation.
Orthogonalization Principle for Hybrid Control of Robot Arms under Geometric Constraint
Suguru Arimoto 대한전자공학회 1992 대한전자공학회 학술대회 Vol.1992 No.10
A principle of “orthogonalization” is proposed as an extended notion of hybrid (force and position) control for robot manipulators under geometric endpoint constraints. The principle realizes the hybrid control in a strict sense by letting position and velocity feedback signals be orthogonal in joint space to the contact force vector whose components are exerted at corresponding joints. This orthogonalization is executed via a projection matrix computed in real-time from a gradient of the equation of the surface in joint coordinates and hence both projected position and velocity feedback signals become perpendicular to the force vector that is normal to the surface at the contact point in joint space.<br/> To show the important role of the principle in control of robot manipulators, three basic problems are analyzed, the first is a hybrid trajectory tracking problem by means of a “modified hybrid computed torque method”, the second is a model-based adaptive control problem for robot manipulators under geometric endpoint constraints, and the third is an iterative learning control problem. It is shown that the passivity of residual error dynamics of robots follows from the orthogonalization principle and it plays a crucial role in convergence properties of both positional and force error signals.

This article deals with the various problems related to the given title from four sections. Section "Social function of the academic research enterprise (ARE)" focuses on three problems: Framework of the research on the ARE; Functions of the graduate school in the ARE; and Centers of learning and Japanese ARE. Section "Structure of ARE" discusses two problems: Structure of social stratification and the structure of ARE in the policy framework for the current ARE. Section "Social condition of ARE" argues over three problems: Social condition of the ARE; The effects of change of national policy on the ARE; and National government policy for the ARE in the postwar period. Section "The impacts of the national government policies on ARE" treats three problems: Trend of the recent national government policy on the ARE; Some unintended effects of the policies; and Discussion of proposals for reform. These discussions lead to concluding remarks.
R&D policy and social contribution in Japanese higher education
Akira Arimoto 서울대학교 교육연구소 2016 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.17 No.3
The Japanese academics have high recognition of themselves as the researchers rather than the teachers. This kind of climate developed in the national research universities including Teikoku Daigaku in the prewar time and even in the postwar time; it has extended to almost all academics not only in the research universities but also in the non-research universities. This fact was testified clearly in the CAP survey conducted in 2007, in which the Japanese academics’ research orientation belonged to the German type. A climate of academics in Japan is different from the counterparts in the USA as shown in the CAP survey, in which the American academics are oriented to research and teaching with a weight of half and half. Given the Japanese academic climate involved in research orientation, the national government offers in recent years the research grants to academics as the category of researcher on the basis of “selection and concentration principle” to the extent that only distinguished researchers in research productivity can be selected. Accordingly, Kakusa Shakai, or the social difference between the institutions with high productivity and those with low productivity, seems to be increasingly extending recently. The question that how the Japanese government disseminates research outputs to make these outputs be more socially utilized is likely to be not answered adequately for many years because there are few meta-evaluations to assess policy’s usefulness. However, such meta-evaluation of policy is expected to be done strictly since 2002 when it was introduced in the context that government policy’s contribution to society was functioned substantially.
