Experimental characterization of timber framed masonry walls cyclic behaviour

Ana Maria Gonçalves,João Gomes Ferreira,Luís Guerreiro,Fernando Branco 국제구조공학회 2015 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.53 No.2

After the large destruction of Lisbon due to the 1755 earthquake, the city had to be almost completely rebuilt. In this context, an innovative structural solution was implemented in new buildings, comprising internal timber framed walls which, together with the floors timber elements, constituted a 3-Dframing system, known as “cage”, providing resistance and deformation capacity for seismic loading. The internal timber framed masonry walls, in elevated floors, are constituted by a timber frame with vertical andhorizontal elements, braced with diagonal elements, known as Saint Andrew‟s crosses, with masonry infill. This paper describes an experimental campaign to assess the in-plane cyclic behaviour of those so called “frontal” walls. A total series of 4 tests were conducted in 4 real size walls. Two models consist of the simple timber frames without masonry infill, and the other two specimens have identical timber frames but present masonry infill. Experimental characterization of the in-plane behaviour was carried out by static cyclic shear testing with controlled displacements. The loading protocol used was the CUREE for ordinary ground motions. The hysteretic behaviour main parameters of such walls subjected to cyclic loading were computed namely the initial stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity.

Systolic blood pressure variability within 120 hours of admission predicts the functional outcomes at discharge of patients with acute ischemic stroke

        Pedro Tiago,Pereira Pedro,Costa Ana Sofia,Almeida Fábio,Loureiro Maria Luísa,Alfaiate Teresa,Gonçalves Abílio 대한신경집중치료학회 2022 대한신경집중치료학회지 Vol.15 No.1

Background: Blood pressure variability (BPV) is a predictor of short- and long-term disability in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Its effect on more immediate functional outcomes has been seldom studied, and the results are inconsistent. We aimed to determine the role of BPV during the first 5 days of hospitalization in functional status at the time of discharge of patients with AIS.Methods: We enrolled 134 patients diagnosed with AIS and BPV using standard deviation and coefficient of variation (CV %). These were associated with the dichotomized modified Rankin Scale at discharge using logistic regression. Results: Patients with unfavorable outcomes were significantly older (P=0.014), had a lower body mass index (P=0.001), were less likely to present with dyslipidemia (P=0.001), had lower serum triglyceride levels (P=0.012), had a longer hospitalization period (P<0.001), and had a higher mean National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score at admission (P<0.001). After adjusting for multiple confounders, the CV % of systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the first 120 hours after admission had a significant effect on functional disability at discharge. Conclusion: Variability in SBP in the first 5 days of hospitalization had a deleterious effect on the functional outcomes at discharge of patients with AIS. The role of diabolic blood pressure variability seems to be significant only in the first 24 hours of admission; however, further research is required.

Characterization of agar from Gracilaria tikvahiae cultivated for nutrient bioextraction in open water farms

        Rocha, Cristina M.R.,Sousa, Ana M.M.,Kim, Jang K.,Magalhã,es, Jú,lia M.C.S.,Yarish, Charles,Gonç,alves, Maria do Pilar Elsevier 2019 Food hydrocolloids Vol.89 No.-

Abstract

Gracilaria tikvahiae, an endemic western North Atlantic red alga, was cultivated for nutrient bioextraction in urbanized estuarine waters in Long Island Sound and the Bronx River Estuary, USA. This study assesses the feasibility of an integrated approach of using G. tikvahiae produced in this bioextraction system as sustainable biomass source for agar production. Agars were extracted after alkaline pre-treatment and characterized in terms of gelling strength, chemical composition, chemical structure and gel structure. Results indicated that this seaweed performed similar to other cultivated Gracilaria in terms of extraction yield and gelling strength of the agar. Differences between sites were not significant in terms of agar gel strength, though yield was higher at Long Island Sound. The extracted agars were sulfated, methylated and with no detectable pyruvate substituents. It is possible to use an integrated strategy of nutrient bioextraction in urbanized estuarine waters and agar exploitation with G. tikvahiae.

Highlights

Agar was successfully extracted from G. tikvahiae used in the nutrient bioextraction systems in urbanized coastal waters.

Extracted agar performance was similar to other Gracilaria agars.

There were no significant differences in the gelling strength between the two cultivation sites.

NMR profile and gel structure of the extracted agars was analyzed.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
