        Effect of selected pesticides on larval mortality of the neuropteran predator, Chrysopa lacciperda Kimmins, of the lac insect, Kerria lacca (Kerr)

        Laboratory bioassays were carried out to evaluate the bioefficacy of some pesticides against larval Chrysopa lacciperda Kimmins, a lac insect predator, to develop a suitable strategy for field management of this serious neuropteran pest of Indian lac insect, Kerria lacca (Kerr). Seven insecticides (lambdacyhalothrin, carbosulfan,spinosad, indoxacarb, fipronil, alphamethrin and ethofenprox) were identified based on field trials against the lac insect. They were evaluated for their bioefficacy against C. lacciperda by spraying the insect directly and by exposing the insect to a residual film. Direct spray of lambdacyhalothrin (0.005 and 0.008% a.i.), carbosulfan (0.02 and 0.03% a.i.), fipronil (0.005 and 0.01% a.i.), alphamethrin (0.005 and 0.01% a.i.), spinosad (0.02% a.i.),indoxacarb (0.02% a.i.), and ethofenprox (0.02% a.i.) exhibited 100% mortality of C. lacciperda within 24 h of treatment. Fipronil (0.005 and 0.01% a.i.) and indoxacarb (0.02% a.i.) were equally effective as 100% mortality was observed within 24 h of treatment with both modes of treatment. For most insecticides, direct spray was more effective compared to residual films. It is therefore, suggested that lambdacyhalothrin, carbosulfan,indoxacarb, spinosad, fipronil, alphamethrin and ethofenprox shall be incorporated in IPM programs for the effective management of this neuropteran predator of lac insect without adversely affecting the lac insect.

      • Genetic diversity assessment of Indian barley cultivars using RAPD markers

        Assessment of the extent of genetic variability within a cultivated crop has important consequences in plant breeding and conservation of genetic resources. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to produce barley genomic DNA fingerprints. The aim of this work was to investigate the efficacy of polymorphism contained in such fingerprints on disclosing genetic relationships among 26 barley genotypes including advanced lines and released cultivars. Among the 21 primers the percentage of polymorphic bands ranged from 33% (OPG-07) to 83% (OPG-02), showing a high degree of molecular variation. The highest genetic similarity was observed between genotypes Karan-521 and Karan-741(58%), and the lowest genetic similarity was observed between the cultivars Lakhan and C 138 (3.7%). The similarity matrix by the UPGMA algorithm delineated the above genotypes into four major clusters. The results demonstrate the utility of RAPD markers in differentiating Indian barley varieties.         Mechanical, Thermophysical, and Ultrasonic Properties of Thermoelectric HfX2 (X = S, Se) Compounds

        In the present study, ultrasonic and thermophysical behaviour of thermoelectric hexagonal structured HfX2(X = S, Se)compounds have been analysed by the theoretical evaluation of second and third order elastic constants (SOECs and TOECs)using many body interaction potential model. The computed SOECs have been used to determine the temperature dependentspecific heat, thermal energy density, elastic coupling constants, Grüneisen parameters, ultrasonic velocities, Debye averagevelocity, ultrasonic attenuation, and thermal relaxation time. We have observed that the temperature dependent ultrasonicattenuation and thermal relaxation time for HfX2are mainly affected by thermal conductivity. The elastic properties of thematerial are compared with existing data in literature for the validation of the work. The obtained values of elastic stiffnessare found very large in comparison to that of other material from transition metal dichalcogenides of group IVB indicatingbetter mechanical properties than the same group materials. Calculated elastic, thermal, and ultrasonic properties are correlatedfor better characterization of the materials which are useful for thermoelectric and energy transport applications.
