Outcomes of Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion Using Unilateral Versus Bilateral Interbody Cages

        Conor P. Lynch,Elliot D.K. Cha,Augustus J. Rush III,Caroline N. Jadczak,Shruthi Mohan,Cara E. Geoghegan,Kern Singh 대한척추신경외과학회 2021 Neurospine Vol.18 No.4

Objective: To assess the impact of bilateral versus unilateral interbody cages on outcomes for minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS TLIF) procedures. Methods: A retrospective review for primary, elective, single-level MIS TLIF procedures with bilateral posterior instrumentation from 2008–2020 was performed. Patients were grouped according to unilateral or bilateral interbody cage use. Procedures performed without static interbody cages or indicated for trauma, infection, malignancy were excluded. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) included visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index, 12-item Short Form health survey physical composite score (SF-12 PCS), Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System physical function (PROMIS-PF). PROs were collected preoperatively and postoperatively. Change in PROs (Δ) was calculated and compared between groups. Achievement of minimum clinically important difference (MCID) was calculated using established values from the literature. Achievement rates were compared between groups using logistic regression. Results: The study included 151 patients, with 111 unilateral and 40 bilateral cage placements. Charlson Comorbidity Index, diabetes, and insurance status differed between groups (p<0.050). Prevalence of degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis (both p≤0.002), operative level (p=0.003), and postoperative length of stay (p=0.022) significantly differed between groups. The unilateral group had lower 1-year arthrodesis rates (p=0.035). Preoperative VAS leg (p=0.017) and SF-12 PCS (p=0.045) were worse for the unilateral group. ΔPROMIS-PF was greater for the bilateral group at 2 years (p=0.001). Majority of patients achieved an overall MCID for all PROs, except VAS leg (bilateral group). Conclusion: While preoperative status and postoperative arthrodesis rates differed, patients achieved an MCID at similar rates regardless of use of unilateral or bilateral cages.

      • Aluminium resistant, plant growth promoting bacteria induce overexpression of Aluminium stress related genes in Arabidopsis thaliana and increase the ginseng tolerance against Aluminium stress

        Farh, M.E.A.,Kim, Y.J.,Sukweenadhi, J.,Singh, P.,Yang, D.C. G. Fischer 2017 Microbiological research Vol.200 No.-

<P>Panax ginseng is an important cash crop in the Asian countries due to its pharmaceutical effects, however the plant is exposed to various abiotic stresses, lead to reduction of its quality. One of them is the Aluminum (Al) accumulation. Plant growth promoting bacteria which able to tolerate heavy metals has been considered as a new trend for supporting the growth of many crops in heavy metal occupied areas. In this study, twelve bacteria strains were isolated from rhizosphere of diseased Korean ginseng roots located in Gochang province, Republic of Korea and tested for their ability to grow in Al-embedded broth media. Out of them, four strains (Pseudomonas simiae N3, Pseudomonas fragi N8, Chryseobacterium polytrichastri N10, and Burkholderia ginsengiterrae N11-2) were able to grow. The strains could also show other plant growth promoting activities e.g. auxins and siderophores production and phosphate solubilization. P. simiae N3, C. polytrichastri N10, and B. ginsengiterrae N11-2 strains were able to support the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana stressed by Al while P. fragi N8 could not. Plants inoculated with P. simiae N3, C. polytrichastri N10, and B. ginsengiterrae N11-2 showed higher expression level of Al-stress related genes, AtAIP, AtALS3 and AtALMT1, compared to non-bacterized plants. Expression profiles of the genes reveal the induction of external mechanism of Al resistance by P. simiae N3 and B. ginsengiterrae N11-2 and internal mechanism by C. polytrichastri N10. Korean ginseng seedlings treated with these strains showed higher biomass, particularly the foliar part, higher chlorophyll content than non-bacterized Al-stressed seedlings. According to the present results, these strains can be used in the future for the cultivation of ginseng in Al persisted locations.</P>

Electronic structure studies of chemically synthesized MgFe2O4 nanoparticles

        Singh, J.P.,Won, S.O.,Lim, W.C.,Lee, I.J.,Chae, K.H. Elsevier Scientific Pub. Co 2016 Journal of molecular structure Vol.1108 No.-

For present work, magnesium ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized using nitrates of metal ions and citric acid. Crystallite size of these nanoparticles varies from 2.1 +/- 0.1 to 62 +/- 10 nm as annealing temperatures increases from 300 to 1200 oC. Mg K-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectra reflect the presence of Mg2+ ions in both tetrahedral (A-site) and octahedral (B-site) environment for nanoparticles synthesized at all temperatures. The integral area of spectral features of O K-edge spectra is associated with the change of unoccupied O p-projected density of states. Fe L-edge spectra envisage the presence of Fe3+ state in these nanoparticles. Observed changes in the electronic structure of these nanoparticles are discussed on the basis of cation migration from A-site to B-site, degree of crystallization, and unsaturated bonds at crystallite surface. Fe-O distances at A-site and B-site changes with annealing temperature.

      • A sensitive fluorescent probe for the polar solvation dynamics at protein-surfactant interfaces

        Singh, P.,Choudhury, S.,Singha, S.,Jun, Y.,Chakraborty, S.,Sengupta, J.,Das, R.,Ahn, K. H.,Pal, S. Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Physical chemistry chemical physics Vol.19 No.19

<P>Relaxation dynamics at the surface of biologically important macromolecules is important taking into account their functionality in molecular recognition. Over the years it has been shown that the solvation dynamics of a fluorescent probe at biomolecular surfaces and interfaces account for the relaxation dynamics of polar residues and associated water molecules. However, the sensitivity of the dynamics depends largely on the localization and exposure of the probe. For noncovalent fluorescent probes, localization at the region of interest in addition to surface exposure is an added challenge compared to the covalently attached probes at the biological interfaces. Here we have used a synthesized donor-acceptor type dipolar fluorophore, 6-acetyl-(2-((4-hydroxycyclohexyl)(methyl) amino) naphthalene) (ACYMAN), for the investigation of the solvation dynamics of a model protein-surfactant interface. A significant structural rearrangement of a model histone protein (H1) upon interaction with anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as revealed from the circular dichroism (CD) studies is nicely corroborated in the solvation dynamics of the probe at the interface. The polarization gated fluorescence anisotropy of the probe compared to that at the SDS micellar surface clearly reveals the localization of the probe at the protein-surfactant interface. We have also compared the sensitivity of ACYMAN with other solvation probes including coumarin 500 (C500) and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylamino-styryl)-4H-pyran (DCM). In comparison to ACYMAN, both C500 and DCM fail to probe the interfacial solvation dynamics of a model protein-surfactant interface. While C500 is found to be delocalized from the protein-surfactant interface, DCM becomes destabilized upon the formation of the interface (protein-surfactant complex). The timescales obtained from this novel probe have also been compared with other femtosecond resolved studies and molecular dynamics simulations.</P>

Probing the Thermodynamic and Magnetic Properties of UV-B-Emitting GdAlO3 Phosphors by ESR and Optical Techniques

        Singh, V.,Sivaramaiah, G.,Mohapatra, M.,Rao, J. L.,Singh, N.,Pathak, M. S.,Singh, P. K.,Dhoble, S. J. Springer Science + Business Media 2017 Journal of Electronic Materials Vol.46 No.2

<P>GdAlO3 phosphor samples have been prepared by a solution combustion method. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the GdAlO3 phosphor stabilized in orthorhombic phase. The optical absorption spectrum showed bands due to Gd3+ ions as well as defect level in the host. The excitation spectrum exhibited a dominant band with maximum at 273 nm. Upon excitation at 273 nm, ultraviolet-B (UV-B) emission with maximum at 312 nm was observed from the undoped sample, being attributed to P-6(7/2) -> S-8(7/2) transition of Gd3+ ion. The UV-B emission was enhanced at liquid-nitrogen temperature (77 K), most probably due to increased ground-state population according to the Boltzmann distribution law. Electron spin resonance spectra of samples at both room and liquid-nitrogen temperature exhibited resonance signals at g ae 2, attributed to Gd3+ ions arranged with octahedral symmetry linked via oxygen bridges. Various magnetic and thermodynamic parameters for the phosphor system were evaluated by standard procedures. Correlation of these values with the optical properties suggested that the GdAlO3 phosphor can be effectively used as an UV-B light source for industrial applications at room temperature.</P>

      • Charge and mass transport properties of La2Ni0.95Al0.05O4.025+δ

        Jeon, S.Y.,Singh, B.,Im, H.N.,Seong, K.P.,Song, S.J. Elsevier Sequoia 2014 Journal of alloys and compounds Vol.589 No.-

<P>In this work, mass and charge transport properties of acceptor doped lanthanum nickelate, La2Ni0.95Al0.05O4.025+delta d (LNAO), were analyzed. The thermal expansion, electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power of LNAO were measured as a function of temperature in 25-1000 degrees C range and oxygen partial pressure ( pO(2)) in -14 <= log (pO(2)/atm)6 <= -1 range. The average thermal expansion coefficient was 13.77 x 10 (6) K (1). The electrical conductivity was analyzed in relation to the thermoelectric power to elucidate the positive deviation of the activity coefficient of hole on the basis of the delocalized electron model. The thermoelectric power measurement shows a p-type to n- type transition. The chemical diffusion coefficient (D-chem) and surface exchange coefficient (ksurf.) were calculated by 4-probe DC conductivity measurement and ksurf. was slightly higher than ((D) over tilde Dchem). The best- estimated hole-mobility values showed very weak temperature dependence. The results were compared with the literature results on La2NiO4+ d. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</P>

Effect of Dietary L-ascorbic Acid (L-AA) on Production Performance, Egg Quality Traits and Fertility in Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica) at Low Ambient Temperature

        Shit, N.,Singh, R.P.,Sastry, K.V.H.,Agarwal, R.,Singh, R.,Pandey, N.K.,Mohan, J. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.7

Environmental stress boosts the levels of stress hormones and accelerates energy expenditure which subsequently imbalance the body's homeostasis. L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) has been recognized to mitigate the negative impact of environmental stress on production performances in birds. The present investigation was carried out to elucidate the effect of different dietary levels of L-AA on production performance, egg quality traits and fertility in Japanese quail at low ambient temperature. Sixty matured females (15 wks) were equally divided into three groups (20/group) based on the different dietary levels of L-AA (0, 250 and 500 ppm) and coupled with an equal number of males (1:1) obtained from the same hatch. They were managed in uniform husbandry conditions without restriction of feed and water at 14 h photo-schedule. Except for feed efficiency, body weight change, feed consumption and hen-day egg production were recorded highest in 500 ppm L-AA supplemented groups. Among the all egg quality traits studied, only specific gravity, shell weight and thickness differed significantly (p<0.05) in the present study. Fertility was improved significantly ($p{\leq}0.01$) to a dose dependent manner of L-AA. The findings of the present study concluded that dietary L-AA can be a caring management practice at least in part to alleviate the adverse effect of cold induced stress on production performance in Japanese quail.

      • Enhanced electrocatalytic activity due to additional phosphorous doping in nitrogen and sulfur-doped graphene: A comprehensive study

        Razmjooei, F.,Singh, K.P.,Song, M.Y.,Yu, J.S. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2014 Carbon Vol.78 No.-

Effect on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of ternary-doped reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as an electrocatalyst is evaluated by employing thiourea as a single source of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S), and triphenylphosphine for phosphorous (P) as precursors for heteroatom doping. The topographical studies show that by doping the RGO, disruption in surface charge and spin asymmetry is introduced into the carbon matrix due to the difference in the bond length and electronegativity between carbon and heteroatoms, which makes carbon lattice ORR active. Ternary (N, S and P)-doped RGO shows excellent ORR activity, which is ~2 times better than that of binary (N and S)-doped RGO, and ~5 times better than that of single (P)-doped RGO. The catalytic activity of the ternary-doped carbon even exceeds the commercial Pt in alkaline medium. Additional P doping causes remarkable synergistic effect on binary N and S-doped RGO by generating active P-N species, improving graphitic order and increasing surface area as well as mesopore volume, which in turn enhances the ORR activity.

        Chae, Gyu-Ihn,Prasad,P.,Singh, I.J. 울산대학교 1983 연구논문집 Vol.14 No.1

The concept of c-continuity is due to Gentry and Hoyle [3] and that of H-continuity owes to Long and Hamlett[6]. It is known that continuity H-continuity c-continuity and that implications are not reversible. In this paper the authors investigate and study a new function which lies between continuous function and c-continuous function but independent of H-continuity function.
