A 4-year-old female American cocker spaniel was hospitalized with 6 months prolonged dermal problems in The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. Initial noticed signs by owner of this dog were rashes and papules on ear part and they were spreaded whole body. On initial physical examinations, papules, pustules, crusts, and erythema were presented on whole body. Diameters of focal scaly and erythematous alopetic lesions were varied ranging 1 to 4cm. Skin scraping for detecting ectoparasites and wood's light examinations for dermatophyte were negative. Any bacteria were not detected but Malassezia pachydermatis was detected on cytological examination and fungal culture. The dog was treated with Itraconazole (5mg/kg, q12h) and Cephalexin (20mg/kg, q12h) orally and then bathed with 2% chlorhexidine shampoo twice per week for 5 weeks. From 12 weeks after starting therapy, all dermal problems were disappeared although some mild pyoderma were once relapsed. Regular chlorhexidine bathing treatment so far has been continued for preventing recurrence.

1% iodophor loaded microspheres of PLGA (Poly[DL-Lactide-co-Glycolide]) were prepared by solvent evaporation method and were applied to the cows on dry period for evaluating it's preventive effects on intramammary infections. The morphology of the microspheres were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and their releasing patterns were investigated. On investigating idophor releasing patterns of the microsphere, burst releasing pattern was detected until 2 days after in vitro incubation and sustained releasing was observed until 4 weeks. In field trial of teat dipping solution containing idophor loaded microspheres in dry cows showed significant preventive effects of intramammary infection caused by S. aureus, S. agalactiae, coagulase negative Staphylococci and coliform bacteria (p<0.05).

We performed this study to evaluate the potential clinical marker of urinary trypsinogen-2 together with amylase, lipase and urinary amylase creatinine clearance ratio (ACCR) for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis in dogs. In the experiment on daily changing patterns of amylase, lipase and ACCR measurements in experimentally induced pancreatitis dogs, compared to values measured in pre-induction state, significant difference was seen in amylase until 5th day of induction, and for lipase significant difference was found during the 7th day of observation period (p < 0.05). No significant difference was found in ACCR for the study period (p > 0.05). On SDS-PAGE analysis of urine from experimentally induced pancreatitis dog, The 26kd band was markedly increased compared with that of normal state and that band was confirmed trypsinogen-2 using substrate interaction and isoelectric focusing assay after being eluted. When assessing the appearance of 26kd band on urine SDS-PAGE 87.1% (range: 50~100%) of experimentally induced pancreatitis dogs showed positive results, whereas no corresponding band was seen in dog without pancreatic disorders. With this result, determination of urinary trypsinogen-2 assay was found to have a high diagnostic value with a 70% of sensitivity and 100% of specificity as a routine test for pancreatitis, although the detection of trypsinogen-2 in urine can be varied on the progression stage of pancreatitis at the initial visit to animal clinic. We therefore suggest that the promising results in this study be used for the development of dipstick test for detecting acute pancreatitis in the future research.

This study was performed to investigate Mycoplasma (M) spp. infection status of dairy cow in South Korea. Among 8,485 bulk tank milk collected from dairy farms of the 5 areas, 26 samples (0.30%) were positive for Mycoplasma by direct culture method. The isolation rates of Mycoplasma spp. according to the areas were 0.51% in Kyonggi, 0.16% in Cholla, 0.23% in Gyoungsang, 0.12% in Chungchong, and 0.08% in Kangwon. In the species identification test by indirect immunoperoxidase test, 16 out of 26 isolates were identified as M bovis (61.53%), M bovigenitalium (23.07%), M californicum (7.69%), M alkalescens and Acholeplasma laidlawii (3.84%), respectively. The isolation rate of Mycoplasma spp. from 208 quarter milk samples in culling cows due to severe clinical mastitis was 3.0%. These Mycoplasma spp. were identified as M bovis (62.0%), M bovigenitalium (12.0%), M californicaum (12.0%), and M alkalescens (12.0%). This study shows that the bovine mammary gland infected by Mycoplasma spp. is present in some dairy farms and the routine culture test of bulk tank milk samples for Mycoplasma is needed for a high quality milk promotion services.

Skin protects the body by mediating various immune responses against exogenous substances including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, in addition to its predominant role as a physical barrier. Despite the significant protection offered via various mechanisms, bacterial infection of the skin is one of the most common skin diseases in veterinary medicine. This study demonstrated the structural and immunological changes in the skin during infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius using skin explants from four healthy beagles. Skin structure was generally well preserved in uninfected controls, but defects in skin structure, including injury of keratinocytes and dermal-epidermal junctional disruption, were identified when skin explants were exposed to P. aeruginosa and S. pseudintermedius. On exposure to P. aeruginosa, marked linear cleft formation was noted along with acantholysis along the basal layer after 24 hours of culture. In addition to the defects in the skin structure, mRNA expression levels of the AMPs cBD103 and S100A8 were decreased, which was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining. Taken together, these results suggest that our ex vivo canine skin model is a research tool for investigating bacterial skin infections in dogs.
