The noise emitted during train operation is generated with various reasons. It is known that the major noise generation is classified according to the ranges of train speed; that is, engine noise at lower speed range, rolling noise at medium speed range, and air-borne noise at higher speed range. These noises are transmitted in combined form with the noises generated from track components and under-carriage, etc. The rolling noise as a major noise at medium speed range is caused by the vibration occurred at wheel/rail interface. The vibration occurred at wheel/rail interface is transmitted to wheel and rail, and this vibration is emitted from wheel and rail as a noise. In this paper, a soundproof box which can simply measure the noise emitted from rail and analyze the characteristics of the measured noise is studied.

The objective or this study is to obtain the fundamental data or layered rubber bearings to prevent the excessive vibration due to the operation of large industrial facilities or transportations. Therefore, the characteristics of the layered rubber bearings are different from those of the layered rubber bearings which are developed mainly for the seismic reduction of structures. Five kinds of the layered rubber bearings are manufactured with different thickness of rubbers and number of plates. The buckling resistance loads are found experimentally for each set of the layered rubber bearings and the relationships between restoring forces and displacements are obtained. All these findings will be employed to design and manufacture the layered rubber bearings which are used for the vibration reduction of structures.

In this study theoretical and experimental analysis is performed by numerical model calculations and impact test.

As the density and height of the buildings nearby subway lines get higher, the unprecedented residents' appeals for noise are on the rise. Furthermore, in accordance with the revision of enforcement regulations on the Noise and Vibration Control Act, the night time noise standards have been reinforced by 5dB effective on January 1st 2010 and the appropriate measures shall be taken accordingly. For the settlement of the public grievances against noise and vibration generated on tracks in at-grade and elevated section, the installation of continuously-welded-rail, rail lubrication system, improved fastening system and higher noise barrier is currently executed. Nevertheless, the noise and vibration levels in some areas are still exceeding the limits required in the regulation. Among the measures, an installation of higher noise barrier or noise tunnel seems to be the most effective way; however, it has limitations owing to the structural stability of existing elevated structures. The paper in consideration of the local conditions and foreign practices discusses the installation of fairing system under the train body as an noise insulation panel in order to reduce the rolling noise and under-carriage noise. Based on the result of this study, a performance verification test during actual train operation is in progress for further study.
