『신데렐라』 다시읽기: ‘원초적 어머니’와 ‘불가의 소녀’ 여성 원형상을 중심으로

이 글은 현대 페미니즘의 집중 포화 아래서 이제는 사라지고 다시 써져야 하는 구시대의 산물로 취급되는 “신데렐라”가 어떤 이유로 보편적이고 생명력 있고 원형적인 서사인지, 다시 말해 어떻게 인간 안에 내재하는 인지적 스키마 및 윤리적 방향성과 일치하는지를 설명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 인간을 인간 되게 하는 가장 선명한 속성을 스토리텔링의 향유 능력으로 볼 때, 시대와 장소를 초월해서 수많은 이형들로 발견되는 신데렐라 서사가 구체적으로 어떤 지점에서 우리 삶에 대한 영향력과 형성력을 가지는지를 보여주기 위해, 두 가지 여성 원형상, 즉 ‘원초적 어머니’와 ‘불가의 소녀’를 중심으로 이야기를 심층적으로 읽고 해석한다. 먼저 ‘원초적 어머니’(primary mother)는 생명을 출산하고 양육하는 모성상으로, 신데렐라 이야기 속에서 죽음을 넘어서까지 되돌아와서 딸을 돕는 어머니, 나무와 가축의 형상으로 변신해 딸에게 필요한 물질과 애정을 제공하는 절대적이고 희생적인 어머니로 나타난다. 이 원초적인 모성상은 한편으로 딸의 성장에 있어 필수 불가결한 양육을 담당하는 동시에, 다른 한편으로는 자식을 의존과 퇴행의 위치에 묶어두는 양가적이고 역설적인 존재로 기능한다. ‘불가의 소녀’(a girl who sits beside the fire)는 ‘재투성이’라는 이름에서 유추되듯, 불 가까이에 머무르며 그 불의 파괴력과 생성력 양편으로 담금질을 받는 어린 샤먼 후보생으로서의 신데렐라에 관한 형상이다. 기존의 공동체 내에서 가장 어리고 순결한 존재, 신성한 불을 돌보는 임무를 위해 분리되어 유폐된 존재, 성스러운 불이라는 제의적 폭력의 희생양이라는 원형상이 신데렐라라는 다성적인 이미지 속에 겹쳐져 보임을 여러 버전의 이야기들을 비교함으로써 논의한다. This article attempts to explain some aspects, for which Cinderella is a universal, vital and archetypal narrative, in other words, a narrative of which the cognitive schema and ethical direction correspond to the elements inherent in humans, In view of the ability to enjoy storytelling as an essential attribute that makes us humans, Cinderella"s narrative, which is found in numerous variants, transcending times and places, shows at what specific point this narrative has influence and shaping power in our lives. For this purpose, the story need to be re-read and interpreted in-depth, focusing on two archetypal images, “the primary mother” and “the shaman girl who sits beside the fire”. “The primary mother” is a maternal image that gives birth and nurtures life. In the Cinderella story, this mother who returns beyond death to help her daughter, transforms into the shape of trees and livestock to provide the necessary materials and affection. She appears as an absolute and sacrificial motherhood. This primitive maternity functions as an ambivalent and paradoxical element, mother to nurture and save on the one hand, mother to kill and destruct on the other. “A girl who sits beside the fire” is an image as a young shaman candidate who stays close to the fire and get burned with both the destructive and generating power of the fire. This young, pure and beautiful girl, confined and separate for the task of caring for the sacred fire, is a victim or scapegoat of ritual and initiative violence, and has the ability of the mastery of fire and the communication with the supernatural world.
