"아랍의 봄" 전후의 정치와 젠더화 -이집트를 중심으로-

        조희선 ( Hee Sun Cho ) 한국외국어대학교 중동연구소 2016 중동연구 Vol.35 No.1

In most countries, including Egypt, where ``Arab Spring`` has overtaken, strong doubt have been expressed as to achievements of Democratization Revolution; except Tunisia, which succeeded in democratization to some degree. However, there is no objection to consider ``Arab Spring`` in Egypt as a revolution, because the authoritarian dictatorship government has collapsed by the power of the people. Even though Egypt achieved remarkable democratization through a people`s revolution of all classes, religions and sexes, it turned out to be the revival of former regime. This article starts from the assumption that the strange counter-revolutionary settlement in Egypt is closely connected with gender issues. It is not the first time that women fought for national cause in time of national crisis, together with men, crossing gender line. The appearance of Egyptian women in fierce demonstration site or overnight sit-in site was impressive enough to change the old image of Arab women. After nationalist revolution, however, Egyptian women were excluded, marginalized, and were coerced to remain in more gendered social space, while suffering jeer, insult, sexual harassment, sexual violence, and rape in public sphere. Especially with the accession to power of conservative Islamic party after revolution, ``Arab Spring`` left severe counter-revolutionary effect for women, to such an extent as some people say ``Arab Winter``. A study on politics and gendering in Egypt before and after ``Arab Spring`` have importance in respect of weighing up the possibility of true democratization in Egypt, because women and gender are regarded as core elements in processes of revolution and counter-revolution. This article can also demonstrate the reason why conservative Islamic party`s rule ended in failure is bound up with gendering. As the political and social movement began in 2004 in Egypt, bearing fruit named ``Arab Spring`` in 2011, and Egyptian Islamic government came to an end in 2013, the temporal range of this article will be limited to 2004-2013.

한국사회 이주 무슬림 커뮤니티에 관한 연구 -유입, 적응, 사회적 네트워크를 중심으로-

조희선 ( Hee Sun Cho ),김대성 ( Dae Sung Kim ),안정국 ( Jung Kook Ahn ),오종진 ( Jong Jin Oh ),김효정 ( Hyo Jung Kim ) 한국외국어대학교 중동연구소 2008 중동연구 Vol.27 No.2

Korea is known as homeogenous nations throughout the history. But Korea`s long history of being a homogeneous nation is facing a rapid change as Korea is fast becoming a multi-ethnic society with a growing number of foreign migrant workers, international students, and inter-racial marriages. About a decade ago, Korea was a country where foreigners stood out among the crowd. But now, it is easy to see foreign communities scattered around the Seoul metropolitan area and outside the capital. There is even a prime time talk show solely dedicated to what foreign residents in Korea think about the country. With the growing number of foreign brides, migrant workers and foreign students, the number of foreign residents exceeded the 1 million mark as of August 2007. Considering that the number stood at a mere 40,000 in 1990, it is truly a dramatic change. Although multi-cultural Korean society is the fastest growing debate in the Korean society, there is a big lackness that deals on the muslim community or immigrant in Korea. According to immigration office data, among 1 million foreign immigrants in Korea, there are an estimated 104,427 Muslims living in Korea, occupying 10% of foreign residents. Considering the high birth rates among muslim immigrants and stagnated birth rates of Koreans, it is worthwhile to investigate muslim communities in Korea. Perhaps, it is the right time to research on Muslim immigrants in Korean society. Considering the mentioned above, this research focuses on the influx, adaptation, and social network of Muslim Immigrants in Korea as the first year subject of the government sponsored project on "Acculturation and Adaptation of Immigrant Muslims in Korean Society: Coexisting with Koslims(Korean-Muslims) in a Multi-Cultural Society". To investigate and to collect data from various muslim groups in Korea, this study divided the Koslims into five categories; Arab Muslims, non Arab Middle East Muslims, Central Asian Muslims, South Asian Muslims, and South East Asian Muslims. In order to outline the Muslim communities in Korea, initially, this research has employed various statistic data as qualitative method. However this study was done mainly through field research using survey method. Questionnaire and a face-to-face interview were used to explain the peculiarity of the different Muslim communities in Korea. Questionnaire and interview questions were prepared in 10 different languages. Collected data were carefully analyzed through SPSS program with cross tabulation and frequencies analysis. Based on fieldwork among Arab, non Arab Middle East, Central Asian, South Asian, and South East Asian Muslim communities in Korea, this article examines the present condition and social network of the Muslim immigrants in Korea. It investigates not only the general situation of the Koslims in Korea but also explores their adaptation and attitude toward the Korean community.

        하디스(Hadith)를 통해 본 무슬림 여성

        조희선 ( Hee Sun Cho ) 한국이슬람학회 2013 한국이슬람학회논총 Vol.23 No.2

The Prophet Muhammad`s Tradition, i.e. Hadith, which was collected and compiled about one hundred years after his death, served as an important source to explain the text of Koran by the commentators of the next generation. While the Koran gives the Muslims primary rules of their life, it does not give answers to many questions where specific guidance is needed in real life. In these cases, Muslim of the earliest Islamic community had followed the custom or usage of the Prophet, namely Sunnah. So, Hadith means the practice, words, approval and confirmation of the Prophet or the words and deeds of his companions. It in no doubt that the Hadith literature has served as an important source ranking second to Koran in enacting Islamic law called Shari‘ah. Hadiths pertaining to women`s issues became a major source of Shari‘ah and played a crucial role in establishing Muslim women`s status and images - regardless of their authenticity. The second chapter of this paper will deal with the transmission, record, and evaluation of Hadith Literature as a basis for criticism of Hadiths related to women`s issues. In the third chapter, I will sort out some typical Hadiths that have contents against women and assess them. Finally in the fourth, I will try to analyze how ‘Mothers of Believers’, i.e. the Prophet`s wives are described in the Hadith in regard of their influence on ordinary Muslim women`s customs and practices.

Jibran Khalil Jibran, the most representative writer among 'Adab al-Mahjar', has enjoyed world-wide reputation until today. He had an important effect not only on Arab and American writers in America but also on his contemporary Arab writers to give birth to the modern Arabic literature. Jibran Khalil Jibran is the most well known writer among modern Arab writers even in Korea. A lot of his works including "The Prophet" had been translated and published into Korean since the sixties by several Korean writers. Unfortunately, Jibran's writings had never been translated directly from Arabic into Korean or studied by Arabic literature scholars in Korea in spite of the fact he is an Arab writer. So, this paper will be dealt with three sides mainly relied upon Arabic materials; first, his life and women that had been rich soil for his literature, secondly, his literary works including novel, short stories, essays, and prose poetry, and thirdly, his thoughts and philosophy like romanticism, Sufism, socio-political reform thoughts, and his nationalism based on humanity.

생애사를 통해 본 이혼 한부모 여성가장의 삶과 적응

조희선 ( Hee Sun Cho ),전보영 ( Bo Young Jeon ) 한국가족관계학회 2013 한국가족관계학회지 Vol.18 No.3

The purpose of this study is to understand the life histories of divorced single mothers and their adaption to the life as a single mother using the life history method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight divorced single mothers aged from 42~ 56 years old. Five life dimensions were derived as a result of our analysis: (a) biological dimension: depletion (effects of chronic fatigue and nervousness) (b) psychological dimension: emotional complexity (effects of ambivalence of divorce, child-caring and role-conflict) (c) psychosocial dimension: "super woman complex" (effects of demanding roles) (d) social dimension: a woman living without a husband (effects of the non-mainstream society), and (e) cultural dimension: insurmountable wall (effects of patriarchal family system) We also found that marriage, divorce, and beginning of new life were major turning points in the life histories of divorced single mothers. Finally, our participants utilized several strategies to adapt to their lives as a divorced single mother, including (a) overcoming physical difficulties due to strong mental health, (b) intentionally avoiding complicated thoughts, (c) reconstructing the meanings of their lives and (d) ignoring social-cultural prejudices against divorced single mothers. Through in-depth interviews with divorced single mothers, we found that our participants went through different life situations but shared experiences in ways to make efforts to survive. Social assistance for divorced single mothers is needed to recognize and respect their lives as they are.
