Background: Prescribing potentially harmful drugs and omitting essential drugs to older patients is a common problem because they take so many medications. In this study, our goal was to identify potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) and potential prescribing omissions (PPOs) using Screening Tool of Older Persons’ potentially inappropriate Prescriptions (STOPP) and Screening Tool to Alert doctors to the Right Treatment (START) criteria to improve proper prescription and reduce improper prescription. Methods: Enrolled in this study were 117 patients older than 65 years old who were hospitalized at Inha University Hospital in Incheon due to pneumonia from January 2012 to March 2012. Patient data, including medical histories, current diagnoses, current medications, and biochemical data were recorded from electronic records. STOPP and START were applied to their clinical datasheets. Results: STOPP criteria identified 24 patients who had 29 PIMs. Most potential inappropriate prescribing was of cardiovascular medications, followed by drugs whose primary effect is on the urogenital system and gastrointestinal system. START criteria identified 31 patients who had 46 PPOs. The cardiovascular system drugs comprised most of the PPOs. No PPOs were identified under the central nervous system criteria. Conclusion: Given the current Korean medical system conditions and considering the many clinically important situations when prescribing drugs, STOPP/START criteria are not absolute criteria to prevent improper prescription, but sagacious usage of these standards can help physicians to prescribe properly in clinical practice.
PEBAX/PVDF 복합막 제조 및 투과증발을 통한 에탄올/물 분리 연구

In this study, a PEBAX/PVDF composite membrane was fabricated, and its pervaporation performance wastested in an ethanol/water mixture. In addition, we attempted to improve the pervaporation performance of the compositemembrane by forming a ZIF-8 layer on the surface of the PVDF substrate. The thickness of selective layer was optimizedby comparing the pervaporation performance depending on the PEBAX thickness. A pervaporation test was performed onthe Ethanol/Water mixture. As a result, the composite membrane using PVDF substrate with ZIF-8 layer had a flux of 1.98kg/m2h and separation factor of 3.88, showing higher values of both permeation flux and selectivity than the compositemembrane using bare PVDF substrate. 본 연구는 PEBAX/PVDF 복합막을 제조하고 에탄올/물 혼합액에 대한 투과증발 성능을 평가하였다. 또한 PVDF지지체 표면에 ZIF-8 층을 형성하여 복합막의 투과증발 성능을 향상시키고자 하였고, PEBAX 선택층 두께에 따른 성능 비교를 통해 최적의 막을 선정하였다. 제작된 복합막을 물과 에탄올이 95/5 중량비로 혼합된 공급액에 대하여 투과증발 실험을수행하였다. 그 결과 ZIF-8 충이 형성된 PVDF 지지체를 사용한 복합막의 경우 플럭스 1.98 kg/m2h, 분리 계수 3.88로 일반PVDF 지지체를 사용한 복합막보다 투과량과 선택도가 모두 높은 값을 나타내었다.

In this study, the alternative to the energy-intensive conventional vacuum distillation process, an eco-friendlyand energy-efficient pervaporation separation was employed in 1,2 hexane diol/water (HDO/water) mixture. The crosslinkedPVA-glutaraldehyde was coated inside the alumina hollow fiber membrane (Al-HF). In the HDO/IPA pervaporation separation,optimization of the membrane concerning PVA/GA ratio, curing temperature, and pervaporation operating conditionwere performed. In the long-term stability test, the sustainable pervaporation separation performance giving flux in the rangeof 1.90~2.16 kg/m2h, and water content in permeate was higher than 99.5% (separation factor = 68) was obtained from thePVA/GA (molar ratio = 0.08, curing temperature = 80°C) coated Al-HF membrane from HDO/water (25/75, w/w, %) mixtureat 40°C. Therefore, this work provides potential and inspiration for PVA-based membranes to mitigate excessive energyrequirements in HDO/water separation by pervaporation.
