Vol.23 No.2

Lee Jae Won is a scholar who wrote the most in Euirim, a representative Oriental Medical magazine after the liberation of Korea, on the Sa-am Acupuncture Method. In order to understand the principles of this method, he proposed rather distinctive theories called the Comparative Pulse Diagnosis and the Five Constitutions. Lee Jae Won distinguished the deficiency and exuberance of the Five Phases through the Comparative Pulse Diagnosis, and set harmonizing the Five Phases by tonifying the deficient and purging the exuberant as the object of the Sa-am Acupuncture Method. He took pulses from both the patient’s hands and distinguished the deficiency and exuberance of the five viscera. Then, he balanced the Five Phases by tonifying the weakest viscus and purging the strongest viscus. Lee Jae Won argued that because the Five Constitutions are something that one has innately, people suffer from differnet diseases according to their constitutions. Therefore, he argued, when treating a patient, one should first decide the constitution of the patient and then treat the patient according to his/her deficiency or exuberance. From the late 50’s to early 60’s, Lee Jae Won wrote Acupuncture and Moxibustion According to Yin-Yang and the Five Phases, explaining the principles of the Sa-am Acupuncture Method and its applications. Seen from this, Lee Jae Won is a person from whom we can confirm the historical lineage of the Sa-am Acupuncture Method after the liberation of Korea.

Vol.21 No.2

Through researching 鄕藥救急方, the oldest medical text published in Korea in existence known to date, a study from a Traditional Korean Medicine perspective was conducted. This study aims to observe the treatment of oral, glottal, labial, and dental diseases starting from 統一新羅時代to the Koryo dynasty from a historical perspective and also find out what clinical significance it withholds. 『鄕藥救急方』proposes methods of nurturing the teeth and in doing so displays the tendency of Traditional Korean Medicine of putting much weight on preventing diseases and nurturing the body. 『鄕藥救急方』considers the oral, glottal, labial, and dental diseases as not only fundamental problems in itself but also treats them from a perspective that they are results of disharmony among the five viscera and the six bowels. The treatment methods mentioned in 『鄕藥救急方』 are directly cited in 『鄕藥集成方』of early Chosun dynasty. In 『東醫寶鑑』of mid-Chosun dynasty, however, changes and modificatios are made to the prescriptions.

Vol.1 No.1

Objectives : To explain the Saam’s acupuncture method which is hard to understand, Kim Hong Kyung organized it into three categories according to the characteristics of the acupuncture points. First, if the three acupuncture points are the same element (of the five elements), it goes under the 天府穴 (Chun boo acupuncture point) category. Second, if the acupuncture points consist of two different elements, it goes under the 二符穴 (Eeh boo acupuncture point) category. Third, if the acupuncture points are all different elements (three), it goes under the 三符穴 (Sam boo acupuncture point) category. Of these, acupunctural treatment using the 三符穴 (Sam boo acupuncture point) was also called (Sam boo acupuncture method). Methods : In Nan Kyung (Difficulty Classics), pulses are analyzed by pairing them with the five elements. Also, the patient’s weight constitution and cold-heat symptoms are examined. Then, the deficiency and excessiveness can be differentiated using characteristics associated with the 五情 (five emotions 怒喜思憂恐), 魚鳥走甲類 (fish/ bird/ runners/ shelled creature type) and 精氣神血科 (Essence, Qi, Spirit, Blood) of original Image Medical Science. Results : 三符 (Sam Boo) acupuncture method is a healing method using the 三符穴 (Sam Boo Hyul). As seen before, in each 三符穴 (Sam Boo Hyul), there are three different elements. A disease is when the balance of the five elements is broken between the five viscera and six bowels inside of the human body. Excessiveness and deficiency is caused through the unbalance of the five elements. The principle of 三符 (Sam-Boo) acupuncture method is to first find two excessive characteristics of the five elements. If they are found, the other three elements would be relatively deficient. Thus, these three elements are tonified using the 三符 (Sam Boo) acupuncture point and the balance is restored. Before looking at the symptoms of the patient, the constitution of the patient is examined and through the diagnosis method, the excessive two elements are found. Conclusions : 三符 (Sam Boo) acupuncture method examines the patient’s constitution to find the two elements (of the five elements) that are excessive. The constitution of the patient in association with deficiency and excessiveness of the five elements was emphasized rather than the actual symptoms. This approach is a new way to Saam’s acupuncture method.

Vol.16 No.3

Objectives : The inclusion of Korean Medicine in the national health care system led to the need of a serious discussion on its modernization. This paper looked at how these discussions were progressed. Especially, a difference in the meaning of 'science' in the 1950s and the 1990s was observed. Methods : Articles related to the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in "EE LIM", especially the ones from the 1950s, were selected, classified and analyzed. Research papers on Evidence-Based Medicine were also analyzed. Evidence-Based Medicine was a new medical research methodology in the 1990s. Articles on Evidence-Based Medicine were searched and selected from journal databases: DBpia, KISS, RISS, and OASIS. Results : The problem of establishment of modernity of Korean Medicine in the recent times was addressed in the context of scientification and systematization. Accordingly, the academic societies of Korean Medicine aimed for scientification. But efforts to secure the identity of Korean Medicine opposed to western science were also made. Meanwhile, Evidence-Based Medicine established in 1992 presented a different concept of science. This led to a new means of acknowledgement of Korean Medicine in the modern society. Conclusions : The modernization process of Korean Medicine up to now was a course of scientification. But as this process did not fully reflect its characteristics, the modernization of Korean Medicine still remains a pending question. A modern study methodology that fully reflects the identity of Korean Medicine needs to be established.
