The virtual engineering technologies have been broadly used for the design, testing, manufacturing and maintenance works of industrial product. Recently many VR systems with walk through navigation and web databases; such as design and installation database, load history database, maintenance history database et al. are developed. However, the virtual engineering in railroad industry is not well developed compared to other industries like automobile, air, shipbuilding. In this paper, we explain the strategy that we have applied the virtual engineering technology to the design works of rolling stock and our plan to build the virtual testing laboratory(VTL) in the Korea Railroad Research Institute.

Life cycle costing is one of the most effective cost approaches when we choose a solution from series of alternative so the least long-term cost ownership is achieved. Life cycle costing in railway industry has been focused on the prediction of investment for railway vehicles. But in today, the life cycle cost, LCC, prediction on the aspect of operation and maintenance cost through whole life cycle is highly necessary. In this paper, we present a strategy for the development of life cycle cost estimation software on the aspect of maintenance strategies of railway vehicle. For this purpose, we suggested a structure of LCC software based on the UNIFE LCC model. And we developed a pilot version of software to evaluate the LCC model that we suggested for railway vehicle. We performed LCC analysis on the brake module of metro vehicle in case study and concluded that the software and model developed in this research could enough to support engineers in choosing better cost effective solutions from many alternatives.

A bunch of management studies have repeatedly revealed that the extent of knowledge sharing across organization contributes significantly to the firm’s sustainable competitiveness. However, in reality, it is a hard fact that we must admit that many individuals working in competitive situations always feel reluctant to share knowledge. Especially, positive and negative emotions play an important role in changing individual’s intentions about knowledge sharing and knowledge utilization as well. Intention about knowledge sharing is usually hindered by in-group rivalries. Also employees feel negative in sharing their knowledge with colleagues when they expect to receive little support and recognition in return after doing that. These considerations point out the importance of individual’s knowledge sharing and the role of knowledge management in order to assure competitiveness. Considering these facts, the main purpose of this study is to investigate why people is willing or unwilling to share their knowledge with others and utilize the knowledge in the competitive context where potential rivalry is still expected. In answering these research issues, we analyzed 258 valid questionnaires garnered from online community where a number of people has been actively interacting with registered members to share crucial knowledge about sensitive issues. Results revealed that the proposed research issues are adequately solved with significant statistical results.

In this paper, we introduced a simulator to visualize the driving scenery of newly developed train called the K-AGT(Korea Automated Guideway Transit). The simulator consists of mainly two parts; control system and display system. In the control system, user can control the driving speed of the K-ACT. the driving environment(day and night), the operation of the train door and the screen door and user"s views(driver s view, left window view, right window view, passenger"s view), In the display system, immersive driving scenery generated by stereoscopic head mount display system and 3 channel POP display system are displayed. We tire expect to utilize the system to share the idea among customer, designer and constructor and verify the operating condition of the K-ACT intuitively.
