In this paper, we propose an AFDO (Adaptive Fault Diagnosis Observer) and a fault tolerant controller for a class of nonlinear continuous-time system under the nonlinear abrupt actuator faults. Together with its estimation laws, the AFDO which estimates that the actuator faults is designed by using the Lyapunov analysis. Then, based on the designed AFDO, an adaptive sliding mode controller is proposed as the fault tolerant controller. Using Lyapunov stability analysis, we also prove the uniform boundedness of the state, the output and the fault estimation errors, and the asymptotic stability of the tracking error under the nonlinear time-varying faults. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed diagnosis method and the control scheme thorough computer simulations.

Using data from the on-line survey conducted shortly after the 21st Korean National Assembly election, this paper examines the consequences of partisan polarization in the non-political domain. Results show that the greater extent of affective polarization⎯the difference between affective evaluations of the supporting party and the other party⎯leads one to prefer selective relationships with those who share the same partisanship in everyday life and to judge other’s intellectual and moral capabilities based on his or her partisanship. In addition, this paper also finds that non-political consequences of partisan polarization become stronger as one’s level of political knowledge increases. These findings have important implications regarding our understanding of partisan polarization in Korea and the role of political knowledge in mediating voters’ information processing mechanism.

In spite of vast literature of retrospective voting in Korea, not much empirical evidence has been presented regarding how voters form retrospective evaluations. Using a survey experiment, this paper analyze whether Korean voters update their retrospective evaluations when they are exposed to new information regarding governmental performance. Experimental results show that Korean voters do update their retrospective evaluations according to new information, and that changes in retrospective evaluations are similarly observed regardless of their partisanship. In other words, retrospective evaluations change in a consistent way even when supporters of the governing party are exposed to negative information and when supporters of the opposing parties are exposed to positive information. These results show that, when forming retrospective evaluations, Korean voters incorporate information that is not consistent with their pre-existing political predispositions. This in turn indicates the possibility that retrospective voting happens systematically in Korean elections.
