This report investigates the stress distribution according to the location and shape change of the circular hole for the lightweight design of the cross beam of a railway passenger car and studies the lightweight design. To design a lightweight cross beam with a circular hole, we selected the non-circular crossbeam as a basic model, examined the stress distribution and displacement by position and determined the location, shape, size and quantity of the hole for light weight. We analyzed the effects of the position and shape of the hole on the maximum equivalent stress and displacement. The influencing factors were set as the design parameters, and the stress value was examined according to the variation of each variable. By considering the stress value according to the change of each variable and selecting the design parameter with the narrowest scattering value of the stress at each position of the hollow cross beam with various hole positions and shapes, we studied a cross beam with a circle hole under identical load condition to have an equal stress distribution to that of a non-circular cross beam.

We consider the position and thickness of reinforcement with respect to fatigue fracture of welded bogie frames and propose an appropriate reinforcement method for many cases. The bogie frame is usually designed in accordance with JIS and KS, and operates under harsh load conditions: dynamic loads generated while driving, various loads during operation, and large load differences between loading and unloading. Consequently, fatigue failure often occurs throughout the bogie frame. We modelled the reinforcing method using ANSYS software and reviewed stress in the vicinity of common fatigue failure sites through computer simulation, optimizing the position and thickness of reinforcement.

The vertical roller mill, which performs the grinding and partly blending of raw material, is the one of the important machine to produce ordinary portland cement. It has been reported that an unexpected fatigue failure occurred in a table liner in the course of grinding portland cement. The life of table liner is estimated to 4×10? cycles in the design stage, but at the field, when its operating time reaches to 2×10?~8×10? cycles, the fracture of table liner begins to be found. The fracture of table liner is initiated from the outside edge of grinding path contacting with the grinding roller. Its maintenance normally take 30 % of the total maintenance costs of the roller mill. Therefore, this study shows the clarification of the reasons occurring the fatal destruction of the table liner by fatigue fracture analysis utilizing fracture mechanics and by the finite element method. And, the results form Goodman diagram illustrate relationship of including information on the transition between tensile and bending fatigue strength in the fatigue characterization of table liner.

The fracture of a structure, machine, machine part comes of surface micro-crack initiated and propagated at the root of notch, where the stress is high. Irregular distribution characteristics of micro-crack on the basis of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics doesn't predict exactly remaining life of them. It is thought that maximum micro-crack length represents the total fatigue damage because fatigue can be characterized as a progressive failure phenomenom that proceeds by the propagation and coalescence of micro-cracks to an unstable size. The maximum micro-crack length in an area larger than the sample area can be estimated by statistics of extremes. Therefore, the remaining life of components can be accurately predicted using the distribution of micro-crack length in critical areas and the fatigue damage model.<br/>

An efficient sequential optimization approach for metamodel was presented by Choi et al.(13) This paper describes a new approach of the multilevel optimization method studied in Refs. [2] and [20,21]. The basic idea is concerned with multilevel iterative methods which combine a descent scheme with a hierarchy of auxiliary problems in lower dimensional subspaces. After fitting a metamodel based on an initial space filling design, this model is sequentially refined by the expected improvement criterion. The advantages of the method are that it does not require optimum sensitivities, nonlinear equality constraints are not needed, and the method is relatively easy to understand and use. As a check on effectiveness, the proposed method is applied to an engineering example.

In this paper, a versatile multi-objective optimization concept for fatigue life prediction is introduced. Multi-objective decision making in engineering design refers to obtaining a preferred optimal solution in the context of conflicting design objectives. Compromise decision support problems are used to model engineering decisions involving multiple trade-offs. These methods typically rely on a summation of weighted attributes to accomplish trade-offs among competing objectives. This paper gives an interpretation of the decision parameters as governing both the relative importance of the attributes and the degree of compensation between them. The approach utilizes a response surface model, the compromise decision support problem, which is a multi-objective formulation based on goal programming. Examples illustrate the concepts and demonstrate their applicability.
