언어적/비언어적 발화 분석을 통한 척도도식의 개념화 양상 연구

When observing speakers, we can discover that they present a certain form of gestures as if to reflect an aspect of an image schema. This study aimed to inquire into how the scale schema is reflected in verbal utterance and gesture utterance, by making an analysis of gestures accompanied with verbal utterance in debaters appearing on a TV debate program. According to the analysis results, regarding all kinds of expressions meaning the degree including the expressions of quantity, speakers tend to make gestures moving from the center of trunk towards the outside or inside. These gestures can be interpreted that the SCALE schema that is supposed to direct towards the outside from the trunk has been projected. Such a consideration manifests that gestures made in an involuntary manner while speaking are far from being arbitrary, showing that a relatively systematic conceptual structure such as an image schema is reflected in gestures.

스토리텔링 구조에서의 손짓언어 양상 연구

This study examined the hand gestures speakers use during face-to-face storytelling, the role the gestures play in the storytelling process, and the ways in which verbal utterances and hand gestures are combined. Considering the relationship between utterance content and hand gestures, the storytelling structure was divided into four levels, and the pattern of hand gesture use was examined at each level and when moving between levels. Results showed that speakers reproduced the scenes unfolding in their mental space mainly through metaphorical hand gestures. They signaled storytelling structure level and scene changes with or without hand gestures and navigated through changes by using hand gestures. The hand gestures speakers use while speaking play a role in overcoming the limitations of verbal utterances, such as incompleteness of form and gaps in meaning. Hand gestures also play a role in segmenting temporally continuous verbal utterances to form units of meaning.

백악기 경상분지 울산지괴 내 지질구조와 변형사

백악기 경상분지의 동부에 위치하는 울산지괴는 서편으로 양산단층과 동편으로 울산단층에 의해 경계지어지며, 하양층군 퇴적암류와 유천층군 화산암류, 그리고 이들을 관입하는 불국사 화강암류로 구성된다. 백악기 퇴적암류를 구성하는 암층들의 분포 특성에 근거하여 양산단층의 우수향 주향이동운동은 25~35 km의 수평변위를 가지며 울산지괴는 양산단층의 광역적인 우수향 주향이동운동 이전에는 의성지괴와 접해있었던 것으로 보고되었다. 활발한 연구가 진행된 양산단층과 달리 울산지괴에 관한 구조지질학적 연구는 부족한 상태이며, 이번 연구에서는 백악기 이후 울산지괴의 변형사와 특징적인 지질구조들의 형성기작을 분석하고자 한다. 울산지괴 내 지층자세는 동래단층을 기준으로 양편에서 서로 다른 특징을 보인다. 동래단층 동편의 지층은 체계적으로 남동쪽으로 경사지며 평균 29°의 경사각을 가지는 반면, 동래단층과 양산단층 사이의 지층은 평균 17°의 경사각을 가지고 남쪽에서 북쪽으로 갈수록 지층의 주향이 시계방향으로 회전한다. 따라서 동래단층 서편에는 서북서 방향의 습곡축을 가지는 배사구조가 형성되어 있다. 동래단층 동편과 서편 지층의 경사 방향이 반대인 점과 10° 이상의 평균 경사각의 차이는 이 두 구역이 차별적인 변형을 받았음을 암시한다. 위치상으로 양산단층과 동래단층 사이 배사구조의 습곡 핵(core)에 해당하는 울주군 범서읍 구영리 일대에는 노두 규모의 습곡이 다수 관찰된다. 노두 상에서 확인된 습곡들은 단층 관련 습곡(fault-related fold)의 형태로 발달하며, N40~90°W의 선주향과 15° 이내의 선경사의 축을 가지고 원통형의 기하와 개방(open)~밀착(tight)습곡의 밀착도(tightness)를 보이는 것이 특징이다. 또한 축면벽개가 관찰되지 않고 암상에 따라 변형양상의 차이를 보이며 이암 및 셰일층 내에서 연질퇴적변형구조(soft-sediment deformation structure)가 관찰되지만, 일부 습곡 받은 지층에서 층간 미끄러짐의 흔적이 인지된다. 언급된 습곡의 특징은 퇴적층이 완전히 고화되지 않았을 때 습곡이 굴곡 미끄러짐(flexural-slip)에 의해 형성되었음을 지시한다. 습곡축과 층리면에 발달하는 단층조선을 통해 복원된 고응력장은 남-북 내지 북북동-남남서 압축을 지시하며, 이는 습곡과 함께 발달한 서북서 방향의 단층면상의 단층조선을 통해 복원한 고응력장과도 일치한다. 습곡 노두와 함께 발달한 서북서 방향의 역단층은 서북서-동남동 방향의 산성질 암맥에 의해 절단되며, 산성질 암맥의 SHRIMP U-Pb 저어콘 연대측정 결과 98.8 ~ 80.7 Ma가 도출되었다. 따라서 울산지괴 퇴적층의 쇄설성 저어콘 연대측정 결과(SHRIMP U-Pb 연대: 106.8 ~ 103.6 Ma)와 산성질 암맥의 연대측정 결과를 종합할 때, 구영리 일대의 습곡구조는 103.6 ~ 80.7 Ma 사이에 형성된 것으로 판단된다. 한편, 횡절관계로 확인된 습곡의 형성시기는 양산단층의 우수향 주향이동운동 이전이기 때문에, 양산단층의 우수향 변위를 복원시켜 양산단층 동편과 서편의 지층자세를 비교·분석하였다. 양산단층 서편 경주시 안강읍 일원의 지층자세는 남쪽에서 북쪽으로 갈수록 주향이 시계방향으로 회전하며 전반적으로 서북서 방향의 습곡축을 가진다. 우수향 주향이동 변위를 복원한 양산단층 동편과 서편의 지층자세가 매우 유사한 것과 양산단층의 광역적인 우수향 주향이동운동 동안 울산지괴의 수평회전이 없었던 것에 근거하면, 울산지괴 내 습곡과 역단층은 양산단층의 우수향 주향이동운동 이전 남-북 내지 북북동-남남서 방향의 압축력에 의한 결과로 판단된다.

Hand gestures we unconsciously use when speaking reflect image schema. This study examines hand gestures of debaters on a MBC TV show, A Hundred Minute Debate, on the assumption that hand gestures we unconsciously use reflect container schema, one of the major image schemata. Various events or actions can be expressed in the conceptual structure of container, content, or boundary. This is similar to how meaning is dealt with in oral language. Consequently, gesture is a means of understanding and expressing meanings as much as verbal language.

This paper explores Korean language users’ hand gestures within the framework of cognitive linguistics. Human body language provides good evidence of an interrelation of physical experiences, cognitive processes, and language. From a cognitive linguistic approach; the concept structure is motivated by physical experiences, cognitive linguists call this process “embodiment”. This paper considers that hand gestures reflect a concept structure like entity metaphor, a kind of ontological metaphor. Entity metaphor is understanding abstract concepts in terms of physical objects. Understanding our experiences in terms of objects allows us to pick out parts of our experience and treat them as discrete entities of a uniform kind (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980, pp. 25). Catching imaginary entity gesture reflecting entity metaphor appears frequently. For example, the speakers touched a virtual object with their hands and motioned to dismantle it or reduce its size while speaking. This suggests that we use entity metaphors in everyday verbal/nonverbal language.

The current study examines how the force schema is related to the form of action language from the point of view of cognitive linguistics. Starting from the hypothesis that conceptual structures such as image schema or metaphor are revealed in the subconscious action language, which is simultaneously realized at the point of utterance, this study investigates how the force schema, one of the image schemata, is reflected in hand gestures. Force is an essential element in interaction with the surroundings for human beings living as organisms. The structure of force conceptually plays a central role in understanding human experience as it is combined with force-based activities. Johnson(1987) calls the image schemata including the force schema experiential gestalt, meaning it is an integrated whole structure within our experience, and categorizes it into the structure of force COMPULSION, BLOCKAGE, COUNTERFORCE, DIVERSION, and REMOVAL OF RESTRAINT. As such an image schema is structured based on experience, hand gestures we make while talking naturally reflect the image schemata.

This paper explores the human body languages within the framework of cognitive linguistics. Human body languages provide good evidences of an interrelation of physical experiences, cognitive processes, and language. In cognitive linguistic approach, the concept structure is motivated by physical experiences, cognitive linguists call this process ‘embodiment’. This paper considers that the human body languages reflect the concept structure such as SCALES schema. Also, it shows the relation between the image schema and our experiences through various physical responses, physical activities, and the muscular motions. Many aspects of human behavior are quite similar to animal behavior. Human body languages originate from the instinctive behavior of the survival of the species. We can find the conceptualization by SCALES schema(i.e. HAVING FORCE IS UP; BEING SUBJECT TO FORCE IS DOWN, GOOD IS UP; BAD IS DOWN) shows on human body languages which encompass height, location, clothing, greeting, response, etc.
